I plan to convert all of the song files on my computer into one format. What Format will reduce size without audio quality loss. I have a good convert I just would like the file type and what bitrate to put it them in. note: I don't care if you don't gain much more space because i'm not really willing to sacrifice audio quality.

Well mp3 can be set to ultra high quality, or crappy low quality. Just fiddle around with the cd burning options on your music player program.

Isnt that a picture file type?

I guess you should just use .mp3 at the highest bit rate, because I don't think every mp3 player supports .flac

You guys in this thread are all such dumbasses. .wma is just a cheap ripoff of the .mp3 codec, and it isn't necesarily lossless. .wav files, which are often 24-bit lossless, take up a large filesize but they affect the processor minimally, which is why they're used in games. A .aif file which can be created on itunes is best for lossless audio however, and a .mp3 file is best for anything else because it's so universal. A good bitrate for a .mp3 file is 128 kbits/sec, and for those who are size-concious 64 kbits/sec will do.

Does that clear anything up?

wma is useless, you can hold 400 wma songs with 1gb,mp3 is more reliable

Well no, slaughterMYdaughter, that isn't really true. wma is useless, but that's only because it's just a cheap imitation of the .mp3 codec. Therefore the sizes of similar mp3's and wma's aren't all that different. You should use .mp3, not flac or wma files because those file formats don't have significant compression differences and .mp3 is universal.

By the way, I'll give someone major props if they can tell me what .mp3 stands for

A .mp3 conversion is the best you can have, especially if you're not looking for quantity over quality.

mp3 is the most readable format you can have.

There is no doubt that mp3 is the way to go when encoding. 99% of new-age digital readers won't have any problems.
