What is it with all these dark newbies? I mean really, it's like I look at half of the newbies around here and they're dark. WTF?

Dark is mysterious. Dark is dangerous. Dark is cool.
Need any other reasons or did my point get across?

I like light
light is cool
light is calm
light is the way

So many people think it's "cool" to be a dark voter, but it's the light voters who make Newgrounds a place for people to ask, learn and experience how to create with flash.

If you're unsure you should go Neutral, or you could just go Light, they definatly need any help they can get.

Newbies...dark automatically makes them 1337 hax0rs? lol

I'm light...although in hand-to-hand combat it's possible I could beat you, I'd probably run away before getting the chance. :-)

That might have something to do with it spancker, but I notice that's usually when some newbie posts here and flames you first (simple defensive reaction). Most of the time though you answer what questions you can. My original aura (with the old voting system) was light. Once we had the option to change it I switched over to neutral (mainly because my voting style falls within that group).

With the old voting system, I was light aura. I didn't really like that, because I wanted to stay at neutral. So what I ended up was voting 0 on quality movies just so that I can get back to neutral. Then after two days it went back to light and I tried hard to get it back to neutral...well that was the old voting system.

After the new voting system, I based my auras on the ratio of blam/protection rates. I have based it so that if I have more protection than blams, it will be light, if I have around equal number of protection and blams, it will be neutral, and if I had at least 2 times more blams than protections, it will be dark. Basing on this for few days I was a dark aura. However, when I have read the descriptions of the auras, I have found that dark auras are groups of people who vote lower than average. I knew that this wasn't the case for me, because most of the time I find myself to be raising the score. So after reading and understanding what auras meant, I changed to light aura. I believe auras are purely based on how you vote, not the performance in the BBS. So Spancker, if you find yourself to be giving scores about the same as the majority of the users, than change it to neutral. If you find yourself to be giving higher than majority of the users, change it to light. If you find yourself to be giving lower than majority of the users, change it to dark. I see no reason why people should be dark aura because they are mean to other people in BBS or something like that.

people want to be part of the "in" crowd so they vote 0 on everything and have no opinion of their own.

I don't think Tom & Wade care too much about newbies with a small amount of blam/protection points. Their voting power is minor compared to high level users with tons of blam/protection points. It's these guys I believe Tom & Wade are watching to see if they abuse their voting power. Hey spancker, I read in a recent post you were going to change your aura. If you are, to what?

I'm dark because I normally lower the scores, also i have a lot more blam than save points. And also I like the dark-aura background color.

So, wouldn't that make you neutral? It's your call though. I personally think the Neutral/Light backgroud is cooler then the Dark one.

I agree. I tend to have an overall neutral opinion on a lot of flash (I dished out a lot of 3's) and green just happens to be a favorite color.

Well, I guess they just register here, learn about the basics of NewGrounds.com quickly because they're so amazed with this site, and start blamming right away. They also may turn themselves dark when they are just writing things in their profile, because it looks cool from their profile in their point of view(they may not even know what it means). I don't have a big problem with that, but it's kinda confusing if do that because then others won't easily know which side you're on, but then I don't really care people who do that that much.

Aura doesn't really matter now. It no longer represents how you are voting in NG. It is now merely for showcase in BBS. I can just change my aura to neutral or dark, and does that mean I have changed my way of voting? I don't think so. I believe there are a lot of users who chose a certain aura because it looks nice.

Most people would choose dark aura because the color red blends nicely with the background. For example, look at the following picture of levels. Which one do you think is the nicest? I would choose the dark one.

Dark/Light

I chose my aura when I got to level 5. I wanted to wait so I didn’t sell myself as something I might not be. I think the day I chose my aura I made that first step out of the noob pit. (At least I hope so) Basically I will only vote a 0 or a 5. I see all others as a waist of a vote, I almost feel like I’m not committing to what I thought of the piece. I will vote well only if it can either make me laugh (I don’t do that easily), is really well animated, or makes me immediately want to see it again. I will blam if there is form but no substance (good animation/ no point) and vica versa. I have a problem with unfinished work, misnamed or oversold pieces, or attacks on other artists unless it is really well done. I only leave a positive review if I was really impressed or the person has potential (even if he has potential but the work is sub-par it is still a 0 simply to help clear it off the portal). At this point I have been involved in the termination of 431 an protected only 111. I think dark just makes sense.

Only voting 0 or a 5. That is not a good thing. You should use all the numbers in the voting process. Numbers from 1 to 4 are there for a reason, and I believe you should use them. Just voting 0 because it's crap and voting 5 because it's good is not a very good voting.

I will vote well only if it can either make me laugh (I don’t do that easily), is really well animated, or makes me immediately want to see it again. I will blam if there is form but no substance (good animation/ no point) and vica versa.

So what happens if a submission is well animated but not funny? Since it doesn't meet the criteria for 5, does it go directly to 0? Or how about if a movie has good animation and good plot but is not funny? Since it doesn't meet the criteria for 0, does it go to 5? (You see my point, there is a time when you have to vote something in between).

I have nothing against what aura you are. I am not like a light aura advocate or something like that (hell, I was involved in the termination of 4,099 crappy entries and assisted in the protection of 1,302 quality entries). I am saying that you should use more voting buttons than just two of them.
