The world is comming to an end. 2006-02-22 16:23:29 Reply

Well maybe this isn't an appropriate topic name - the world has been comming to an end since as long as I can remember (The last thing I remember was bush being elected), but anyway...

I was just on google, googling random things, when I decided I might try googling the unit names of an RTS game I enjoy playing (Command and Conquer: Generals) - Just the names of those units which I thought were ridiculously impossible, and completely made up by the publisher, Westwood.

The first thing I googled was "Avenger", an anti-air unit used by America's army, which fires two powerful laser beams at incomming aircraft. There, on the first page, was an Avenger, which looked much like the Avenger unit used in the game. There's an article with it as well, which gives you a full definition.

Next, I searched for "Nuke Cannon", a strong artillery unit used in China's army, which can fire a small, tactical, nuclear warhead over long distances. I found a lot of in-game screenshots, something that I would've expected. When I got to page 3 on images, however, I found something that shocked me: A (seemingly) real picture, taken by a video camera, of what appeared to be (none other than) the Nuke Cannon unit depicted in this game.

I clicked that link, and to my suprise, there was a video showing a demonstration of the Nuke Cannon firing a single shell.

Well, that was rather odd, I thought to myself, but then I came to my senses and thought of various ways it probably was possible.

Finally, I searched for "Microwave Tank", another unit seen in America's army, which fires a focused microwave beam that can scramble and disable enemy buildings, and, while not firing, emits an omnidirectional microwave beam which literally fries other units.

To my dismay, I found this article, depicting a microwave-mounted-humvee, which may be used in Iraq to disperse rioting crowds.

Now, I think to myself...what has this world come to? We're building ridiculous weapons to kill each other with - weapons which should only be depicted in RTS games, not real life. And now you say: Why is this person telling us this? I answer: Idunno. It seemed like a good idea at the time...

"this is the end, beautiful NG friend, the end" - The Doors : The End

our world is going to be fine, and i'll tell you why,

because we've been on earth for such a small amount, that we don't matter,

the earth and nature will re-energise and eventually get used to it, done and done

The Avenger doesn't use lasers. Well, not the red kind. As for the microwave truck, that has been done a million times before, hell I drew specs for a microwave gun before. The nuke cannon doesnt suprise me, we can fit nukes into a breifcase why not a tankshell. We have those weapons right now, so be lucky that you live on the side with the weapons.

I'm sorry, but that has to be one of the lamest things I have ever heard - not at all because of what you know about the avenger, I read about it too, and I understand (somewhat) how it works.

Also, with the microwave tank - of course the idea of it has been around forever. The first blueprints for a microwave "Death Ray" were created by the Chinese right after the second World War, and Nicholai Tesla did further research on it. What he found, is that, to create a microwave capable of destroying things over large distances, would take ridiculous amounts of energy...but that's not the point. The point is: penis.
