Router, WTF >=[??? 2006-02-21 17:17:42 Reply

Hey does anyone think they'll be able to help me my problem is.
I have just recently bought a router and I use Windows Server 2003. I host websites and they used to work fine when i was using my access point but since I've got this router it wont let me access them. I can access them via http://locahost but when I type in my IP address it says page cannot be displayed. Anyone got any idea what it might be?

Thanks for any help :)

you have to forward your ports, read your directions from your router it'll tell you how to forward ports.

Like Rampid said, read the instructions that came with the router.

Read your insturction manual for your router. It will give you the local IP to your router. Then you can go to it, log in, and set up port forwarding. Right now, when your router receives the connection, it has not been told to do anything with it.

Anitionally, search:
Your router brand port forwarding

on google. I can almost garantee someone has likely asked this on another forum for your brand of router.

do you have a dmz plus option on your router. cause that will open all your ports as if your not using a router. if not then just forward port 80

Find out your router's IP address (type "netstat -n" in your DOS command prompt without the quotes), type in the IP into the address bar and see if there is an administrative menu there that will help you out in any way.

I'm assuming you received that IP address over a DHCP service from your ISP. What I need you to do is to go and see what your subnet mask is of your server and write this down somewhere, we're going to need to use it later.

The problem is just a configuration problem and that is all. You need to configure the NAT/PAT table on your router, and you need to change the server's ip address to something like 192.168.0.12 or something, the last octet can be anywhere from 2 to 254. The router will do this one thing called a NAT/PAT(Network Address Translation/Port Address Translation), which it will modify the ip address and switch it out with the public ip address you have been assigned, which I am assuming is 82.42.99.118. So let me repeat that step by step...

1) Assign your server the IP address of 192.168.0.12
a) Go to Network Connections
b) Right Click on the Connection then Select TCP/IP then go to properties
c) Give your computer the IP Address of 192.168.0.12, a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0, and a default gateway of 192.168.0.1 (Which is your router)

2) Enable Port Forwarding
a) Go to 192.168.0.1 in Internet Explorer or Mozilla Firefox
b) The default username is "admin" and the password is "password" without the quotes
c) On the left toolbar there will be a selection of Port Forwarding, go there
d) Now type in the LAN IP address of your server, which is 192.168.0.12, and enable the services that you need. If your ftp doesn't work after using the services you can select, create a custom service that enables port 20(the data transfer port) to your router.

Now your router will do PAT translation(It's not really NAT anymore because it's solely based upon ports) All that we have to do is have the router be able to communicate with your assigned IP address from your service provider, which that would be 82.42.99.118... and here are the steps to do that.

3) Configure Your Router With the Public IP Address
a) While still configuring your router, go to basic settings
b) There should be an option to assign a static ip address to the router, not to the server or any other thing on the network, only the router
c) Now in there type 82.42.99.118 for the IP address and the subnet mask that you wrote down in the first step all the way up at the top...

Hopefully that will help you.

You can not change your IP address into something that is more mnemonic like www.google.com without registering a domain name. There are servers out there that take requests from end-users in the form of "www.google.com" or any other website, and then translates this into an IP address. These servers are called Domain Name Servers. Here's a good introduction on DNS and a way you can host a website with a more memorable name rather then just using your ip address (Link ) Actually I'm not sure if the answers answer that problem, but it seems pretty in depth to recommend it.
