Don't forget where you come from, you're encouraged to maintain your culture, etc.
I don't like the idea of the melting pot because of the statement it makes that society comes before individual.
Yeah! Multicultural mosaic... melting pot... that's what I was trying to remember from geography class!
Trust me, I'm Canadian, and my region does have many racist people. What city do you live in? It may be different where you live - I live in North York (the norther part of Toronto). You may be right - your area may have less racist people. Mine obviously has more. I'm not sure if the melting pot or the multicultural mosaic is better - they all have advantages and disadvantages. And trust me, there is some racism here, it's not at ZERO in Canada. I've been called a Chink many times before in my neighbourhood when people (some of them don't even know me and just see me on the street and call me that) try to insult me - sometimes even for no reason, and I think that it's kinda racist. How can people tell if I'm Chinese when they just see an Asian kid? I am Chinese, but geez... does that really make me THAT different? And I heard many people make racist jokes about Chinese people, along with other Asian races included at certain times.
Of course that's racist.

You are right. Racism still exists here, and it must be stopped. However, compared to the US, the level of racial violence is SO MUCH LOWER as to be next to zero. And I mean per capita, obviously there's a population difference.

I live in Detroit which is like 90% black but we have 90%white suburbs on the outskirts of town and if you cross into the suburbs its like you crossed a racial line and all the people stare at you like your not supposed to be there.
They talk about this in 8mile if you seen this movie its llike segregation still exisits in Detroit.

Oh and probably the only thing keeping me from living in Canada is that i cant speak my mind openly about the government. I mean what good is having bush in office if you cant make fun of the idiot.
Bush "Fool me once shame shame on you, fool me cant get fooled again" ¿And this guy is president?

I didn't quite understand your reason for not living in Canada. We can speak our minds on anything we choose.
And I live in a smaller town about 20 minutes south of Hamilton, about 5 hours from Detroit.

Simple things for most become painfully weird for instance say me a 18 year old black walk into a "Starbucks" I'm looked at all sort of ways its as if time stops. So basically what I'm saying is please White America give us a break we just wanna be accepted.
There's an article in the most recent NewsWeek you should read. Written by a black man. On this Subject.
The way I feel is like this: I actually WORK for Starbucks. And my manager is black. (And actually from Africa) I'm a young white male from the southern US.
Think I care about the fact that he's black? I don't.
What do I do when a black guy(or girl), young(or old) comes in the door? I ask them how their day was, and I make them a drink.
Is racism gone from America? No. HELL NO. But it's not as bad as you even make it sound. We've come a looooong way since the 50's, and although there are still scars, they are in fact, healing. I gave up long ago trying to convince anyone things are getting better.
Now I just say shut the fuck up, stop whining and DO SOMETHING.
Because asking the KKK to accept you won't work. They're that fucked in the head, and not about to change so quickly. You bring about these kinds of changes by bringing out the best in others, not by complaining because you get looked at funny when you walk into a coffee shop.
Sometimes I get odd looks when I go places, but maybe it's because I have one eyebrow, all the way across, instead of two. I don't complain about the funny feeling I get when someone won't look me in the face, but stares when I'm not facing them. Hey- it's just hair. Now, I know what you're thinking- that eyebrow isn't going to get me lynched by some crazy 2 eyebrow supremacists, But I ask you this: would I be safe walking down some choice streets in New York? LA? DC? Chicago?
Back to the point of what I'm saying: There is this thing called the golden rule. You don't have to be Christian, or Jewish, or Muslim, or Buhddist, or an athiest to follow it. All you have to do is do unto others as you'd have them do unto you.
Will that make it all better by itsself? No. The problem is much more complex. It needs time, effort and goodwill. Not whining, and I'm sorry, but that's what this sounds like to me.
No one is happy about what went on some 200 years ago.
But it is time for change. And change is upon us.
Do you have the right to whine?
Absolutely.
Will that help.
Slim Chance.

Yeah. I seriously don't understand why people can be such assholes to someone else just because of the color of their skin. Think about it, like what, 3/4 of Americans are white, right? I don't know, I'm just doing a ballpark, I have no clue...but the point is, when you treat someone like crap just cause they aren't white, that's like 1/4 of the women in the country you'll never have a chance of sleeping with. I mean goddamn... To rob yourself of sleeping with someone over something so stupid...
OK it's not the most idealistic way of approaching civil equality, but it works.

Yeah... you're a Canadian... Which city do you live in? Your city may have way less racism than my area - my area must have racism that's really above average then. Then, I don't think that I was right about the "less racism in the U.S." then - I got that from my cousin - I asked him if people were racist to him often, and he said that he never remembered receiving racist shit toward him. My cousin's an American living somewhere near (not in) Boston, MA. I guess that his are must have a racism level below the average.

Actually, Canada's does have a right of free speech - it was mentioned by other people too. I can make fun of people like Jean Chrétien all day and he can't do anything to me - they have so many shows that do that on TV like the Canadian Air Farce. Some of Canada's laws are even less strict than the U.S.'s - for example, we have no death penalty, and don't have a minimum smoking age - you can be smoking in front of cops at any age and they can't do shit about it. You only get in shit if they catch people supplying the stuff to kids.

There. I said that. A no one can do anything about it.
We can speak out against the government all we want.
Though not so much with the personal insults, I really meant to put in more criticizing.

Glad to see my topic is still around its been about a week and a half now. Anyway unfortunately everyone does think as rationally as some of you people here on this board. If so the world would be a much better place. So you tell me to stop complaining and do summthing ok i ask what would you want me to do write a letter to congress and tell them to shape up or im shipping out or better yet release a public statement to white people. And that showing them that your not like the ingnorant blacks think isnt gonna work because for every person like me that walks in ten of the idiots walk in right after me. The problem isnt so much with whites not accepting blacks its with blacks that are to stuck in there lives on money and drugs to change there behavior. the sad thing is i see Black America as a bunch of lambs one lambs fall of a cliff they all follow. Could this because a lack of role models maybe or maybe were making role models out of the wrong people a 33 year old guy who never finished college and strings together rhymes about bitches cars and money is NOT a role model. I repeat is NOT a role model. Basically what im saying people is that one person cant make a difference. That do onto other as they will do unto you is bullshit.

And yes, the golden rule won't fix everything, or did you not read my essay?
I'm glad to hear someone say that about most rappers. They just promote skewed stereotypes and almost always send the wrong message.

i think yor wrong. fist of all, one persn *CAN* make a diffrence... just thinnk thru-out hitory... it almost always starts with one person, that one peson speaks their mind thus making some overs believe the same... soo one person CAN make a diffrence... r u right that the "golden rule" does not fix *everythin* but it does help some therefore it still should be prcticed... and ya

The golden rule always contradicts itself.Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. Then when they do something bad "unto" you, unless you do something equally bad, there are going to be no consequences.
I do think that one person can make a difference, but it takes a hell of a lot of effort and probably a whole lifetime.
That ONE rapper makes a difference. A bad difference, but a difference nonetheless. If anyone could make a difference, anyone could be a proper role model for young blacks, I think it could be DarkBlueFlame.

The golden rule isn't contradictory. If you went on a rampage and killed hundreds, would you feel bad? If you got away with it, wouldn't some part of you wish someone craved justice? If you're a reasonable person, you'd wish to live- that's self-preservation, but you'd also feel guilty, and if you did get caught, would you feel bad about the fact you were caught? Logic would point toward no. You'd be remorseful if you had your head on straight.
But anyway-
that's neither here or there or important.
I never said it was the only solution. I never said it was the end-all be-all. It's NOT that simple, but imagine what the world would be like if everyone acted that way.

If I may, when I lived in the south, a guy from Canada came to my town, and started dating a girl I knew. He was THE most racist guy I knew and started at least 3 fights (that I know of) with black kids.

Just because one guy from Canada came and he was racist doesn't mean anything.
example of stupid generalizations-
I met this american once, and he was gay.
Why are all americans gay?

The Golden Rule is so contradictory "do onto others as you would have them do unto you" if that were true thenin religious terms you might as well throw the whole forgiveness thing out the window. Example i killed you wife and kids i pray to god and ask forgieness but in exchange he slauters my wife and kids. There ya go that saying is basically the same as an eye of an eye a tooth for a tooth.

I'm saying that an interpretation of the golden rule can be an eye for an eye.
You can either interpret it as- always be nice. always do good.
Or- they weren't nice to me, I won't be nice to them.
Two simple scenarios. Some people just choose the one I do.
