Offending Peoples Faith. 2006-02-20 06:52:17 Reply

I've always wondered why devoutly religious people are offended by people of little or know faith such as myself, when we question their faith, Gods and religeon.

To believe in a God with no real proof is all abit to much for me. How can someone live their life following a book written 2000 years ago. Why do people deny themselves nearly all earthly pleasures in fear of not moving on into the afterlife.

How can a person who has so much faith that they believe a man died on a cross to save our sins, made the deaf hear again, or that they'll have access to over 70 virgins when they die get so angry when someone suggests their god doesn't exist?

It has nothing to do with people who know nothing of faith, as to people who are blatantly disrespectful of your faith. For example:

Non-offensive...I say I'm Christian, you say you're not.

Offensive...You putting a crucifix (a holy symbol of my faith) in a jar of urine, and get paid by the federal government with MY TAX MONEY.

It's not the lack of faith that makes them angry, it's the blatant disrespect to theirs. Personally, I don't care about religious satire, except for Kanye West portraying himself as Jesus. Live and let live you know. You may not agree with them, but you don't have to be a dick about it.

Well, there are some EARTHLY reasons, ignoring the Good Book. Most of those earthly pleasures come with earthly consequences, such as STDs, addiction, etc. You don't have to believe in a magical diety to see that most of the ideas in the bible are good practical ones, such as "thou shalt not steal" and "thou shalt not commit murder".

We don't. A real person of faith will just shrug you off and say" your loss", or try and convert you so you don't "live eternity in hell". If someone gets angry one of two things has occured. 1. Their faith is weak so questioning it questions them. People don't like that. Period. 2. You were either really rude or really condescending when you expressd disbelief in their religion. Back to believe what you want about the magical being, just don't be a dick about it.

well, if you were told that a guy who made the deaf hear and died on a cross to save your sins didnt exist, or that the god giving you 70 virgins when you died didnt exist, wouldnt you be a tiny little bit angry?

seriusly, most people are somewhat O.K. with others joking about their religion *cough* extremist muslims *cough*.
but if you go up and insult it, i can see why they get angry.

How can you follow a scrappy document written 200 years ago? The Constitution and Bill of Rights are just books written by men, yet we all seem to hold them in high value......our entire country was founded by what, 4 pieces of paper?

The Bible, Torah, and Koran are the same......

Yes but the constitution is loving breathing document that changes with the times. The Good Books have a lot of good points that are shared by all of the books (torah bible koran) but taking every word in the books seriously is dumb because much of the books are allegory and fables that teach a lesson.

The Constitution is NOT a living breathing document. That is BS spread by fools who look to add their will to the Constitution. It can be changed, but it's a pain in the ass. It's been amended 27 times over 200+ years, and 10 of those were when it was first written. one every ten years or so. Doesn't sound living and breathing to me.

Your misinformed, changing the constitution is not a pain in the ass, all it takes a Supremecourt desiscion, or a 2/3 majority of the senate and house. Thats really not that hard. And 1 amendment for every ten years or so, that sounds like a lot to me. Besides that consider the immense importance of many of those amendments, do we really need something as powerful as a constitutional amendment being created at a whim.

You're right, taking every word of the good books is dumb, which is why no moderate religious practicioner does this. Most and I emphasize MOST people, Christians, Jews, and Muslims don't believe their books at face value.

The Roman Catholic religion is constantly adopting and changing, words are re-interpreted, looked in different lights, etc. One of the biggest complainst I hear is that the Church is too rigid, "how can you believe in a 2000 year old book", etc.

Here are all the councils where major changes in the Church occur:
(1) 1 Nicaea, 325; (2) 1 Constantinople, 381; (3) Ephesus, 431; (4) Chalcedon, 451; (5) 2 Constantinople, 553; (6) 3 Constantinople, 680; (7) 2 Nicaea, 787; (8) 4 Constantinople, 869; (9) 1 Lateran, 1123; (10) 2 Lateran, 1139; (11) 3 Lateran, 1179; (12) 4 Lateran, 1215; (13) 1 Lyons, 1245; (14) 2 Lyons, 1274; (15) Vienne, 1311; (16) Constance, 1414; (17) Basel and Ferrara-Florence, 1431, 1438; (18) 5 Lateran, 1512; (19) Trent, 1545; (20) 1 Vatican, 1869; (21) 2 Vatican, 1962

And then this:
http://www.newground../topic.php?id=392879

But now you get people saying, "Catholics are just changing their faith for money, or because they don't know what's right. SEE! Atheism wins again!!". And the like......

It seems that atheists on this board believe that the faith is too old to be any good, but when we try to change it, it just proves that we got something wrong (which isn't necessarily the case), and that the whole religion is now garbage.......

We seem to be stuck between a rock and a hardplace, and that's where the difference between an intelligent debate about religion and actual offensive and unproductive attacks against the faith...........

Most people seem unwilling to look at things from an alternative perspective, and so they just attack the religion based on what they THINK they know about it.......

"How can a person who has so much faith that they believe a man died on a cross to save our sins, made the deaf hear again, or that they'll have access to over 70 virgins when they die get so angry when someone suggests their god doesn't exist?"

Even the topic starter shows that he has an agenda. He isn't being fair to the people that wholeheatedly believe in their religions. Instead of listening to their side, he just blatantly says that not only is believing in Jesus stupid, but that it's even stupider to get angry when someone points this out.

That's not debate, that's an ATTACK. That's offensive because you are automatically assuming that we are in the wrong, instead of taking the much harder but more productive approach of "walking in our moccasins".

As such, I've generally seen the religious people bend more than the non-religious people in this regard, despite our obvious anger and irks at being attacked from 2000 year old debates and arguments..........
