I have 2 Hard disks

HD1: Windows partition/ HP recovery part.
HD2: Ubuntu

I want to get rid of Ubuntu because I want to switch to a different Linux distro, how can I format Ubuntu and erase GRUB of the MBR without disturbing windows? I did it before and it came up with a HUGE Grub error and my whole computer was fried. I was forced to reinstall windows loosing everything....Well my dad did. So how can I avoid that problem and tottaly erase Ubuntu off the second HD and erase GRUB off the MBR without causing problems?

just insert the install disk of the other distro, chances are it can handle it
