At one point, WolfSoldier asked those responding to not take into consideration those that are in charge right now.
Uh, that's a little hard.
Now, would I die for my country? No. I agree wholeheartedly with Scaletail (if I spelled that right!). This is hard, trying to remember all the points I disagreed with in all those responses, and how they were put. I'll try my hardest.
At one point, someone said, 'If you wouldn't die for your country, get the fuck out.' I remember Scaletail saying, 'Send me a check, and I'll be on my way.' EXACTLY. I've been wanting OUT of this country since Bush was elected. I knew something like this was going to happen, and I didn't want any part of it.
I'm against war, period, though I can see the reasoning behind defending a country. This, however, is not a war that we'd be entering to protect ourselves. War on terror? My ass. If getting rid of nuclear weaponry is so important to Mr. President, then I believe he should start with our own arsenal. The US does, after all, have the largest number of them on earth.
I would not die FOR this country. I would die trying to make this country a better place, yes. We are fighting terror with terror, really...it's like slapping a child while chastizing him, 'DON'T HIT YOUR BROTHER!' It's rediculous. Yes, something has to be done. But there are other avenues, I believe. What are they? Fuck, don't ask me. I'm not the goddamned president. I have a few ideas, but they might only work in a perfect world.
As for foreign affairs in general...someone in this thread stated that America holds together the rest of the 'corrupt world'. My GOD, I laughed at that. America puts it's nose everywhere it shouldn't be...and while Bush is trying his hardest to fix something on the other side of the globe, his own country is falling apart.
I've made this point before: George W. Bush is DUMB. Just plain...simple minded, and I can't help but feel sorry for him. The smartest thing he did was surround himself with people that are WORLDS smarter than him, and I have to admit that much of our problems are coming from them, and not necessarily the president himself.
If you'd like to see him at his best, check out www.dubyaspeak.com . THAT is a great site.
There's so much more that I could say, but I won't right now. I'm going to end up psychobabbling more than I have. I will say this, though:
TO THOSE OF YOU WHO THINK EVERYTHING IS JUST FINE: Open your eyes, and look at what's truly happening. Bush once said to the countries of the world, 'You're either for us, or against us.' How long until all those other countries see that for the threat it is? This isn't merely Vietnam all over again. This is much more dangerous, with nuclear and biological and chemical weapons at our fingertips. Millions of people may die. Innocent people. Doesn't that mean anything?

I forgot I posted in this.
Anyway, to answer the first page...
I used quotes for a reason. When Bush says he's waging a war to protect democracy, he really means that he's waging a war so that we can get cheap oil. Yes, I'd most definitely die if my death could realize the dream of a true direct democracy, but not to support the skewed American political system that masquerades as one.
We are officially classified, by the way, as a Federal Republic, not a democracy.

*sniff* I've been quoted. I think this is the first time someone quoted me. I'd like to thank the academy, my momma, and if I believed in him, God. Thank you, thank you...
But you know, to me it seems simple...if we won't join the draft, why not deport us instead of lock us up? Frankly I could use the free plane ride. There's plenty of countries that have a decent economy, are democratic, and DO NOT stick their noses in other people's business. Canada comes to mind, as does Australia, most of Europe, and lately several countries in the East. You know, I've always wanted to learn Japanese...

Would I die for my country....
Hmmm...
Well, let's review, shall we?
America: Land of the Free, Home of the Brave, etc. etc.
Now, I know that the ideals this country was built on are fast becoming inept, what with new innovations in every field of knowledge and culture.
Indeed, the Constitution says nothing about the internet or cloning, does it?
And yes, the country is based on keeping rich people in power. But, upon review of other countries, the US is a pretty goddamn good place to live, even in the event that you're homeless.
I've been at that point. I know. So don't lecture me on "you don't know what it's like".
But I suppose there are better places to live, but there aren't many. Canada comes to mind. It's like the US, but without the crime, pollution, and the Bible Belt.
I don't think I'd die for America, though. The ideals and the government methods used in running the US of today is far different than the US 100 or 200 years ago.
If it came to it, I'd die for several things, but a corrupted government with invisible borders isn't one of them. All governments have corruption to some degree, but the US is infamous for such practices. Does Richard Nixon come to mind?
Anywhoo-
There are plenty of people I'd die for- family, friends, loves, but I'm not sure of America.
Certainly, if my death alone would save all of America (a la Randy Quaid in Independence Day), but your typical front-lines escapade would be unacceptable, unless I was saving my friends who'd happened to have been drafted into the same platoon as I.
Word.

I would have to agree with Speechless, I would die for my country, yet dying for my government is a different story. My family has always been very militaristic and traditional, having a common surname which has played a role in many (if not all) of the great wars fought by Americans shows that my relatives have been brave men for freedom and the United States.
Currently, I don't like how the US is being handled. I can't just blatantly says "Bush suckz d1ck y0!", because I have more morals and honor than that. Though I didn't vote for him, he is now in power, and we need to respect that... Even if we don't like what he is doing (that's what protests are for).
But, I can certainly tell you. If I lived during the era of WWII with the information I have currently, I would gladly join the military and fight for my country. Though, if I lived in that era without the information now-a-days, I would most likely fight anyway from mere stupidity and the harsh draft.

If you mean you would die for the wealth of your country, you're wrong. The government should.
Because after all, they mostly are the ones causing the trouble.
Take Bush: If he would attack Iraque, that would mean an economic crisis. If an entire country should pay for the actions of one man, that's wrong!
"Doubya" is using his country for a war, and someone should stop him!
