Nope. ...and with the US thinking of reintroducing the draft, I don't think I'll be the only one sitting around in a military prison for going A-Wall.

I think he was talking abut being Dutch. :P
I would die for my country. I live here, I support the government that makes the laws, if the laws say I'll be drafted in the military, then I'll go. If I didn't agree with the government, I wouldn't live here. It's that simple.
Scailtail, you are perhaps the most antagonistic person I've seen toward our government. Don't like it? Don't support it? Don't agree with it? Fine. Don't live here.

Of course I would if necessary. I made that decision long before put on a uniform. All higher social animals engage in organized combat, it is the natural order of things. I accepted this before joining. Now, I no longer wear that uniform but I have still sworn to "support and defend the constitution of the United States" and that oath has no expiration date as such I would do whatever is necessary to do that.

What Scale says here underscores the problem with a draft. While I understand that if everyone had a vested interest in war then people would be a lot more reluctant to go about it. The problem would be that a lot of conscripts would be like this. There would be horrible morale and discipline problems and the quality of the average solider would drop precipitacly. This is not a personal attack on Scale, it is just an acknowledgement (to which I think he would agree) that in his current state, he would make a lousy solider. Bad solders = lots 'o dead soldiers.
PS. the phrase was "absent without leave" or AWOL. The new term is "unauthorized absence" or UA.

Yes, I would. I support the ideals this country is based on and would gladly give my life so they could continue. This dosen't mean that I'm going to join the military, but if I got drafted I'd go.

OK, tell you what, you mail my ass a check and I'll be singing the Canadian national anthem faster than you can say "get lost", but until then, in case you haven't noticed it's not the greatest economic situation here, and being a refugee isn't cheap without a decent education. I already have plans to move out of the USA when I finish college in less than two years, so don't worry, I'm not one of those people who falls into the old phrase "shit or get off the pot", I'm already working on it Mr Patriot. Or should I say Mr. Sheep? Same difference.

Well I'm sorry if you view my having an opinion against the current administration's actions is wrong. As one of the rights given to me by this country you so love, I do have the ability to speak out. Look, don't get me wrong...there are times I hate America, but there are many parts of it I love. Nothing is perfect, and it never will get even close if we don't speak out against the bad, and for the good. Currently though there's too much bad going on to focus on the good: Repealing our rights, a stagnant economy, warmongering. I really do think that Sadaam Hussein has to be dealt with in some way, but to push us towards aggression will not solve this. Americans are already torn in this issue, it's comparable to Vietnam...and reinstating the draft, if it does happen, will tear the nation in half. Now tell me, when you have foreign problems, is domestic issues the next thing you want? Not really. If our rights weren't being taken away, and it was soldiers who volunteered for war going out there, and we weren't having such a "I'm better than you, do what I say" kind of an attitude, then I wouldn't be so opposed to what's going on in the nation. But frankly, Bush is overrated, he's not the next Andrew Jackson...I understand he is TRYING to do right, but he's not thinking it through well enough, he's rushing head first into things that require more diplomatic approaches. War is never a good thing, especially when there are so many alliances attached to them like this one, and people aren't kidding when they say this could be WW3 if it happens.
So if you think these are all actions worth dying for, go ahead, but I'm not the kind of person who would throw my life away for something that I don't believe in. I do believe in America...but I don't believe in imposing it's will on the rest of the world. This isn't a defensive war they'd be fighting, least we forget. No matter how much they try to tell you, it's still being fought in Iraq, and it won't be the citizens of the United States in the crossfire with the two militaries.

i most definately die for my country. thats why i joined the military to give back a little to the country which has given me so many freedoms. every time i put on my uniform, i wear it with pride in honor of those who have served before me, and especially those who have died protecting the freedoms that most take for granted every day. sure, i may not be looking forward to going to kuwait this month,(who in the armed services is?) but im going over there with the attitude of its an honor to serve my country. some of you may think, that just because ppl are in the military, when they get sent to war, they arent scared...not true. just because we've been trained to fight and kill, doesnt mean we get scared too. but, anyway, the next time youre exercising your right of free speech, or any others, thank a servicemember or veteran.

Drafting makes no sence...
Think about, the leader of the country, rich beyond our dreams, deside to send the people he was choosen to serve, to die...
For what? A disagreement between him and another country.
So these two leaders, unable to reach an agreement, decide to see who has the best army and sends their tax-payers, and those who voted for them, to die, so the leaders can sit in a war room, smoking cuban cigars (which we paid for), while we get shoot at...

The question of whether I would die for my country or not is not a simple yes no question.
I personally think that war is a viable method for change..however it would depend on the circumstances of war of whether I would die for my country.
If the United States goes to war with Iraq I would support it but I wouldnn't want to go fight. If drafted I would go but I would be pretty defensive in my actions.
However if the United States was fighting for survival against a fascist or communist state I would be on the front lines with a pair of M-16s in a second.

I would die for my freedom and my rights. I would not die for my government though. I would not die for the corperate elite. I would not die for imperialism. I would not die for alterior interests of the rulling elite. I would not die in some third world shit hole for oil.

I would not die to expand America's borders.
I would not die to protect its president.
I would not die to "protect democracy".
I would not die to eliminate a regime half a world away.
I would not die to counter terrorism.
But I would die for the American people, because on the whole, we mean well, even though we tend to be rather ignorant of anything outside of our borders.

You wouldn't die for Democracy? I'd die for that before I'd die for the American people. Read 1984 there are fates worse than death.....

He said he would not die to "protect democracy", not die for the democratic idea(although he probably wouldn't.) The idea that America(and pretty much anywhere) can be called a democracy is laughable. It is not democratic in its systems and its reality.

Honestly I've got to say that I would die for my country. Why?? To me it's pretty simple. America holds together the rest of the corrupt world. I would never give up what we've worked at for 100's of years and millions have gave their lives for already. Sure you don't like the president or the government whatever it really doesn't matter just through thinking of the sacrafices men have made in the past for even the simplest change in America. I think its ignorant and cowardly to not be willing to die for a country thats given you so much. If your not willing then i say get the fuck out of here

The United States is as Democratic as is possible for a coutry of its size Slizor. I can't see how the fuck you can make a claim that the United States isn't democratic.

No, I would definately not die for this country. As long as we have a president who can pronounce less words correctly than his IQ, I would definately not defend the country which he represents, especially in a war that serves no other putpose than to protect our supply of oil. If some day we are lucky enough to get a president that can make intelligent decisions about things and one that worries about the issues in this country that actually need solving, THEN I just might give a rats ass about this country. But until then, I'm stuck here worrying about the day when we're all inevitably screwed over because of some stupid decisions on the president's behalf.

Hahaha. Okay then, what about these points
1) It is an unrepetant two-party system, historically and by design
2) It has the electoral college
3) It is an elective dictatorship
4) It is dominated by the rich

The founders didn't intend to have political parties at all thus there is no mention of them in the consitution. Political parties evolved because there are to many people in the U.S. too have a canidate present himself as an individual. The two party system evolved because political partoes combined to make themselves more powerful until there were but two.
2) It has the electoral college
That is a minor point....its a relic of the past any way
3) It is an elective dictatorship
I have no idea what the fuck you are trying to say here.
4) It is dominated by the rich
That is your opinion and what the fuck does that have to do with it not being democratic anyway?
