To undertake the training to avoid taking the life of beings (killing).
To undertake the training to avoid taking things not given (stealing).
To undertake the training to avoid sensual misconduct (Also applies to over-pleasures such as gluttony).
To undertake the training to refrain from false speech (lying, bending the truth, etc.).
To undertake the training to abstain from substances which cause intoxication and heedlessness (Can be any drug/alcohol, but could also be anything that causes disillusion of the mind).

Those are the basic precepts. There are others as well, though, including:

To abstain from taking food at inappropriate times.
To abstain from dancing, singing, music and entertainments as well as refraining from the use of perfumes, ornaments and other items used to adorn or beautify the person.
To undertake the training to abstain from using high or luxurious beds.

These are most often done by monks on holy days.

I'm converting to buddhism, and I want you to identify where this came from, to see how much you really know.

I'm fifteen. I'm still a virgin, so no. And also, I don't think saying something like "Hey baby, you ever read the Dhammapada?" would make a woman go crazy over you or anything.

How can you call yourself Buddhist? The teachings state that only through complete self-reliance can we begin the path to inner happyness. That means not being a slave to possesions. Going on a computer entertainment device and stating you are free of material want is the most oxymoronical thing I have ever seen.

To be honest, I have been wanting to say this since the first time I saw your username. You where only on about your 10th post.

There tends to an uncomfortable view of a Buddhist using a computer, for people tend to think "Oh s/he must be wasting time playing computer games all day and such". Eight per cent of adults and 12 per cent of teenagers in the US use the Internet for religious or spiritual experiences, and the number is likely to grow rapidly, according to a study. So in spite of the drop in interest in mainstream religions and increasing secularization, which is the view that one's life can or should be carried out without a religious element, the age-old search for meaning has found the new medium, and that medium is the internet. I often get a distinct feeling of disapproval, as there seems to be the misconception that using a computer somehow conflicts with or goes against the thoughts and ideals of Buddhism. Well, of course there were no computers at the time of the Buddha Gautama, but is a computer any different than more traditional forms of communication? Is there any difference between typing a word document and writing with a quill on a parchment? Surely it’s the content that is more important, correct? The internet, with its worldwide connectivity, will eventually globalize the Dhamma and free it of all its cultural accretions. This leaves an opening for Buddhism to re-express its essence, freeing itself from the institutional grip and the irrelevancies of non-Buddhist cultural practices. The idea of Buddhism on the Internet does not threaten or compete with the ancient understandings - it can only make it more accessible and enhance the original teaching, providing an international forum for discussion and education. Obviously as with any religion, the internet is becoming a medium for which the religion can be spread globally and easily, and eventually will become seemingly inevitable. Now, without being disrespectful, I can not honestly see how any future Buddha, or future followers of the historical Buddha, would not naturally use the available technology and be at quite at ease surfing the Internet. I mean, eight percent of adults and 12 percent of teenagers in the US use the Internet for religious or spiritual experiences, and that is expected to grow as the years grow on. Just because a teaching is ancient, that doesn't mean that it cannot sit comfortably with the new technology. If the Buddha Gautama were alive today, he would surely be at ease in the digital world.

In your "restrictions to buddhim" reply, you stated that one must abstain from dancing, singing, music and entertainments . I am a musician, and I strongly disagree with that. Music is a very serious part of my life, and at times, can be very spiritual. I've learned a thing or two from buddhist practice that has actually helped me become a better musician. Not so much the physical aspect of playing the instruments, but the right mindset and discipline often comes in handy. Actually, playing drums (atleast to me) is sometimes similar to meditating. Playing in a dark room with head-phones on late at night with noone around to bother you is very calming, and I often experience "no mind" during this time. Afterward, I always feel calm and aware, similar to post-meditation. I respect your opinion, it is obvious that you know much about buddhism, but I'm afriad I have to disagree with you one this one.

To be honest, I don't really follow that one. It's something that I would consider more of a rule to follow if you're going to be very devout and focused on meditation. I actually tend to agree with what you're saying in most cases, but not all cases.

At 6/4/06 02:04 AM, the_funk wrote: i believe i am buddhist (or maybe hindu) more than anything. but i havent been christened or baptised under buddhism. is that ok?

Well, first off, christened is a Christian thing, thus the term Christened.

But yeah, you don't need to be ordained (I think that's the wrong word, but I can't remember the word I was just thinking of), as long as you're following the precepts & such, it's all good.

question here.

I've done a tiny bit of studying about Buddhism, and like Christianity, it too has it's own denominations, ie; theravada, Mahayana etc. I had a conversation with someone who claimed to be Buddhist, problem was... she was just simply buddhist... I didn't really understand, because she would obviously have to either acknowledge Buddha as God or a teacher. Who do you say Buddha is? And what backs up for your claim in him.

Patrick.

The Chinese Buddha that portrays Buddha as being fat is actually symbolism. In reality, Buddha was a very skinny person, as he often fasted. The fat Buddha from China is based off of Hotei, a fat Buddhist monk from the 5th century A.D.

His obesity (like Santy Clause) is used to portray jolliness. Often you will see a bag over Buddha's arm, which represents Buddha having plenty of sufferings but still being constantly happy (He's always smiling, whereas Jesus is always suffering. That is one of the major differences between Buddhism and Christianity).

I'm probably wrong so enlighten me?

'Bald head' usually only pertains to monks at Buddhist temples.

And Buddhists are allowed to have material possessions, however material possessions may not have Buddhists.

Buddhism is a generally restriction-free religion. There are really only 5 things that Buddhists can't do, which make up the 5 precepts.

No lying or cheating.
No stealing.
No raping.
No drug pushing.
No killing.

However, there are many things that a Buddhist should do.
