http://www.cnn.com/2..a.cartoon/index.html

Palestinians are threatening to kidnap people at gunpoint. Why? The newest policy of Israel? A mass murder of Palestinians?

No. A fucking cartoon. The cartoon below has resulted in Palestinians closing down the EU office in Gaza City with guns held aloft, threating their use and kidnapping. They said they would keep the office shut down until the EU "apologizes".

Several newspaper editors have already been fired, apparently because the EU that free press and free speech should come second to not offending people.

One Jordanian tabloid editor, Jihad Momeni, in an editorial, called for Muslims to be reasonable about the situation, adding:

"Who offends Islam more? A foreigner who endeavors to draw the prophet as described by his followers in the world, or a Muslim with an explosive belt who commits suicide in a wedding party in Amman or elsewhere?

The newspaper told CNN later that they had fired Momeni.

Guess we know what the answer to Momeni's question is, huh?

It's rather ironic that Islamtic people are pissed off over a cartoon that portrays them as violent, and try to solve the problem AT GUN POINT.

'Tis....

I think the EU trade commisioner scolded the newspaper anyway, apogised, though he said they did have free speech.

Just another propaganda tool to 'hate the west' for the radiclas down there. Really, be reasonable, yes he offended you but come on, as Momeni said, shouldn't we muslims be more worried about that guy who claims he's muslim and is about to blow up a wedding, or a marketplace or something. Did this cartoon kill your mother? Did it attack your well being and health? No. There is no cause for aggression or violence. Just an opinion from someone. This thing has gone way overblown.

Weren't these same cartoons posted before and the same exact thing happened? It was pure idiocy on the editors' behalf.

But yes. The lack of a sense of humor in regards to fundamentalists. That has to be my first problem with them.

That is fucking hillarious. I mean sure, they laugh at cartoons ridiculing the US but they don't like having the joke being on them. I guess it's hard to laugh when you are pressing an AK47 to the temple of some poor journalist's head while they beg for their lives.

Not that I really care about any of the Semitic faiths (Judaism, Christianity, and Islam), but I do feel that it is important that I point out a double standard that we have here in the West.

Not to long ago there were a few Islamic papers that were printing political cartoons of Ariel Sharon as the devil. The general reaction of the Western world was instantly one of disgust and anger.

Now fast forward to the present, and we have a cartoon that is of a similar nature, except against Islam. (Actually, this one is even worse because it attacks a fundamental prophet of the religious movement, not just a contemporary figure). The response in this part of the world is far more leniant; the members of this forum even think that it is just in 'fun and games', and it may very well be.

This is still hypocritical though, we generally view Judaism and Christianity in a positive light while demonizing Islam. Which is foolish because they are all the same religion basically.

Ridiculous assumption. Jacques Lefranc got fired because the Egyptian owner of the France Soir, the newspaper in which the cartoons were published, decided to do so after complaints from the Muslim world. Like newspapers have the right to publish insulting cartoons he has the right to fire editors if they print things he doesn't agree with. The EU had nothing to do with this.

They're angry because it portrays Muhammad in a negative fashion. Portraying Muhammad alone would be a reason for them to get pissed and these were even caricatures. I doubt anybody in the Middle East would care if some newspaper portrayed regular Muslims as violent.

At 2/3/06 12:06 AM, red_skunk wrote: Weren't these same cartoons posted before and the same exact thing happened? It was pure idiocy on the editors' behalf.

Well, the row really escalated when Saudi Arabia called it's ambassador back from Denmark but that was still about the original publication of the drawings by the Jyllands-Posten in September. Some Norwegian paper and the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung also republished some of the pictures before that event but those weren't really noticed. The real republication wave didn't start until this Wednesday after the increasing number of violent threats, boycotts and calls from the Muslim world to "punish" the cartoonists, even though the Jyllands-Posten had already apologised.

I think it's great that so many French, German, Belgian, Dutch, Spanish and Italian newspapers have started to republish the drawings. The boycotts and the demands from the Muslim world were completely unacceptable and this is great way to tell them to shove it. The original intent of the drawings was to accompany an article about European self-censorship regarding Islam and making fun of it. When newspapers actually decide not to publish these articles because it may offend Muslims then the fear of the cartoonists will have proven to be true. This is by the way a great tribute to the Dutch filmmaker Theo van Gogh who got capped by a radical Muslim over a year ago because van Gogh had made a movie about woman's rights in Islam that he found offensive. It's about time some British newspaper republished the drawings as well, maybe they're still a bit scared after Blair's "mocking religions" bill almost passed a few days ago.

If a movie/cartoon makes fun of Jesus then it's understandable that some Christians might take offense. If a movie/cartoon makes fun of Muhammad then it's understandable that some Muslims might take offense. Everyone has the right to offend others however, and I think most people acknowledge this. There would be double standards if people think Muslim complaints are completely justified while thinking Christians shouldn't whine, which is not the case. Most think both shouldn't whine. The only Western country with "double standards" I can think of is the UK, where Jews and Sikhs are explicitly named by the law to be protected from mockery while other religions are not (although there might be other nations with similar legislation but I can't think of any right now).

There was a text vote on BBC Radio 5 yesterday asking whether the cartoon should be printed in the UK which ended with about 60% saying yes it should - 5 hours after the vote ended the presented had to ask all the no voters to stop texting in,

'it seems that word got spread about this vote and people have been organising a no campaign where large groups are continuesley texing no. The vote ended 5 hours ago so it is pointless, if you are one of these people please stop texing and tell your friends to stop texting - you are flooding our message board and blocking out people with legitamate comments'
-Roughly what was said.

When it comes to freedom of speach unless you offend anyone the people who get offended most easily will always be the most protected from critisim and especially so when the organise their protest. I heard this moning that some head Islamic figure had called for an Islamic day of anger about this - if that's not organised offence I don't know what is.

Except Christians and other religions don't go out burning flags, holding a "day of anger", and closing diplomatic offices at gun point while threatening to kill people, so stop trying to equate it to Christians getting offended.

There's a difference between someone whining about something that offends you and threatening violence. If all the Muslims did was whine, or heck, if they whined and boycotted stuff, I wouldn't have a single problem with that, because that's what civilized people do when they get upset, not go out firing AK-47's into the air.

Damn right. Everyone belongs to a group that gets offended by certain things and starts whining. In the UK we managed to get offended by the French President critisising our food. I believe the French offended America (over something we shouldn't get into in this tread) to the point that some American resteraunts renamed French Fries to Freedom Fries. I don't believe during either of these incidents British and Americans went to demonstrate and threaten embasies (correct me if I'm wrong).

There were lots of people that hated France with a passion but the scale of agression in Muslim response to these things just feeds the flames that makes people draw comics like the one they are offended about in the first place.

Ugh. First I say something to Marky because what he perceives as irony is not exactly ironic and someone mentions "double standards". So I post about how the same rules apply to Muslims as they do to Christians and some other guy accuses me of "trying to equate it to Christians getting offended".

I equated jack shit. The Muslim reaction to these drawings was absurd and I think I made that very clear in the last two paragraphs of my first post. I can understand muslims taking offense, sure, the same way with Christians whne they're confronted with works making fun of their religion. But if you read anywhere in my two previous posts that I think the Muslim reaction to this affair was in the same proportion as Christian protests then you must be hallucinating.

You need to realize that according to Muslim faith it is highly blasphemous to portray Mohamed at all, in any fashion. So it's already going to get them upset even before you get into the actual depiction. I'm not saying that they aren't over reacting but considering how much their faith dictates how they live I understand why they're as upset as they are.

Well, if a newspaper put out a cartoon that showed Jesus pooping in a little boy's mouth I think someone would be getting fired.
