This may seem out of place but my friend brian is an aspiring writer and told me this one day. Its a bit of a story, which may seem out of place at first, but if you read it all the way to the end, it will all make sense.
Lets say that one day, a bunch of aliens invaded the US. They took over the captial, started blowing shit up like crazy and took the president hostage. Then the king alien came over the TV and says.
"We've been watching you guys for a while, and we dont like the way you guys are running things. So I am in controll now, you do things my way untill i say so and you start running this country right."
So the aliens totally take over and start making us run our country their way.
And you know that there is not a single American out there that wouldnt pick up a gun and go fight back.
So why do you think there are these people in Iraq fighting back?
Its odd, but it gets the point across. Thought i'd share it with you.

Ya, Ive thought of that (instead though, a powerful country). Except that that was only the first wave of insurgency (guys who lost their families, wanted revenge, etc), as well as saddam loyalists/ex soldiers. Now its mostly guys from other countries, fighting for their own goals.

Well, you must not be allowed to watch the news or anything? I thought it made perfectly good sense and so did everyone else i've told it to. So maybe you should get off the computer and go get an "edumacation"

The difference is simple. We like living in the US and having the freedoms and securities that are provided to us as citizens. The Iraqis were slaughtered and tortured wholesale by their own government, women were exploited, and civil rights were suppressed. That stupid story speaks more to the American Revolution than Operation Iraqi Freedom.

I see where you are coming from with that, and yes it can be applied, but you must understand that the insugents who like the way it is, and so strongly believe in it that they are willing to blow them selves up over it. It can go both ways.
I totally agree, it can be applied to many different things in this world, but i thats the way it was told to me, so i figured i'd keep it the same.

What you miss is that the "insurgents" (terrorists) are not Iraqis. Roughly 87% of the bombers and all of the major anti-American terrorist organizations in Iraq right now are not from Iraq. Nearly all of them are from the neighboring countries, and essentially every terrorist in the Middle East is going to the big fight.
A more accurate version of your story:
Aliens invade, displace US government
Taxes abolished, all borders closed to immigration, Americans happy
Mexicans come and try to blow the hell out of the aliens
Why? The Mexicans benefit from a non-alien US!
The situation is no different in Iraq. The terrorists benefit from anarchy, dictatorships, squallor, pain, and suffering. When we implement a Democracy and Educate the people of Iraq, they become happy and content.
Happy people aren't very eager to blow themselves up.

Wow, nice. I should think about these things with more detail, you are completely right. I stand utterly corrected and a little humiliated because i liked the story so much. You are right, most of the iraqis support us because of the mass genocide of Sadam.
You guys win, i concede. Good posts. Very good.

87%, thats a mighty specific percentage. Care to post a source cause I'm willing to bet that you made that number up off the top of your head, or your source did at least.

Some of these people still see the US as the enemy. A lot of them do not like us because of the first gulf war. Depleted Uranium rounds have caused a lot of birth defects. The Highway of death inicident probally left a nasty image on many Iraqis as well, which was also a major war crime that was overlooked. I'm not saying that all Iraqis hate America, a majority of them probally support the US, but somehow I don't see the majority being by too much. Remember many of the insurgents are probally also posing as the ones helping us too. I hear way too many stories from friends that were in Iraq seeing the Iraqis go from friend ot enemy over night.

To tell you the truth, I wouldn't give two shits if the aliens too Bush hostage. I was actually on the phone with my friend during Bush's State of The Union address and said "it wouldn't surprise me if someone shot him" and frankly I wouldn't care. He's not supposed to be the president in the first place so I'd actually be grateful if someone did do something about it, maybe not to such a violent extent but I'd be all for an impeachment.

Right, but the aliens might be way better than the US government, and are really liberating you people.
The only reason they'd bother is if they were wicked awesome, right?

I don't know, as poorly as I think President Bush is running the country, I'd much rather have him in officer than Vice President Cheney. He tends to scare me more than President Bush does, and if something did happen to him wouldn't surprise me if President Cheney went nuclear on the terrorists that assassinated President Bush, reguardless if they actually did or not.
