The included tutorial really helped.
I know most people would probably drop dead before reading an instruction manual, digital or otherwise, but I probably would've given up before too long had I not gone through the beginner's help file thingy. It's definately a frustrating program if you don't know what the hell you're doing.
After that, it's all a matter of figuring out the individual machines and getting to know them.
I'm still working on that part...

I have been meaning to give Reason a go after one of my friends highly recomended it. At the moment, I just use FL Studio to muck around in.

It doesn't really matter WHAT you use, as long as you have the VSTi for it, it's gonna sound the same regardless if your using Cubase, or Fruity Studio's or Reason or whatever.

However some VSTi's have some preferrences. My choir VST DEMANDS Cubase... and I HAATE Cubase nearly as much as... something thats really hated upon.

I would KILL for a good choir VST...

really? Fruity Loops in my opinion is the easiest program to learn out there. Both graphically pleasing and pretty straight forward... Cubase just plops you with a screen and a bunch of buttons (GO NUTS!)

*points at Khuskan* He has good choir VST. But by some extremely convenient coincidence, he has said you would have to wrest them from his cold dead hands (and hard drive.) So, yeah, kill him. (bwa hahahaha... the fools... I will kill them both when they are locked in mortal combat... bwa hahahahaha! Oh... Wait... I'm God. I could just smite them both... but this is so much more fun... bwa hahahahaha...)

Audio Apps:
Acid Pro 5 - I've been using Acid forever and a day - I love it
Reaktor 5 - Indescribably delicious audio app - defies description - does everything
SoundForge 8 - been using SoundForge forever too - great program
Audition 1.5 - Very nice as a rewire host and great as a general sound app but I'm much more comfortable using SoundForge for editing and processing
CMStudio - a very decent piece of freeware
Reason 3 - My most recent purchase - very nice so far but I've only logged about 4 hours on it so far - so I'm still quite new at it.

an assortment of VSTi's - this, that and the other - which are pretty much all obsolete because of Reaktor 5 - but they're still fun here and there.

On occasion I use a bunch of other 'smaller' programs - scratch, granulizer, Moonfish, Tu2, Magix - those sorts of things - mostly for very specific purposes...

I use an Edirol PCR-30 for my input

This isn't all inclusive but I think I've covered the main stuff... and there you have it...
