The bible is a book thats all it is, it is not the word of god, it is not a "holy book" its just a damn book that tells a story. Hell theres proof it's not even historicly acruate. The so called "mass exoudus" by the jews well it talks about there being humped animals "camels" used to carry supplies eventhough camels weren't used as beasts of burden until a 100 years later. The bible also talks of unicorns in it... fucking unicorns and saytyrs, does this sound true to you?? THe bible should be a book that teaches a lesson, the lesson to treat your fellow man like you want to be treated, and nothing more. Also before u jump down my throat and tell me i'm wrong, give me some kind of proof ANY proof that the bible is actually the word of god and wasn't written as ajoke or by a drunk

The bible only has use in religion if one can prove the existence of god without the bible.
If you can prove the existence of god, then the bible should be tested for consistency with the proof of god.
If the existence of god cannot be proven, no physical evidence is sufficient.
To make a long story short: prove that god exists first, and the bible isn't a valid resource for information on god.

remember that South Park episode when Cartman discovered that he could eat food through his ass and poop out his mouth? well there was another lesson to it symbolically representing taking the Bible out of hand. The episode taught that the Bible is just a bunch of stories to help people solve their own problems. When it's taken out of hand you get the "queen spider." Go see the episode...

Ummm... The point of God is that he's omnipotent and if he didn't want to be seen, he wouldn't let us.
Thanks for the brilliant input anyway...

The thing that's always bugged me about the bible, or rather those who preach it is that they'll focus on certain parts and conviently forget others. Like they'll see "A man shall not lie down with another man" and say that god hates gays. Yet they ignore Jesus' preaching "Love thy enemy." Gotta love selective readings.

The bible is considered a "holy book" by many Jews and Christians. Many religions have a book that is considered sacred or holy by the followers of that religion. The stories presented offer people a way to look at life, and to learn lessons through stories and parables of people "back in the day."
However, the bible cannot be the definitive answer on historical events or political conflict. Teachers, employers, or politicians can look to the bible for examples or how to lead their own lives, but not the lives of other people, the rest of the nation, or even other nations.
I dislike people using the phrase "it says so in the bible" as the answer to everything, when not everyone reads the bible or believes its teachings and stories.
Quote of the day: @Nysssa "What is the word I want to use here?" @freakapotimus "Taint".

The following ARE TRUE!!!!!!!!
Some insects have four legs.
Some birds have four legs.
Rabbits chew their cud, just like cows.
You can cure leprosy by rubbing bird blood on a house.
The world is flat.
God loves sacrifices of animals.
God hates the deformed.
Women are evil during their periods.
It is evil to have a fabric made of multiple materials.
We are all related, and thus all sex is incest.
Incest is evil.
WHY IS IT TRUE????
THE BIBLE SAYS SO!!!!
(This has been a work of satire. I can give you the scriptures that you can find the above information, except for that last one which is not directly stated, but as we all descended from Adam and Eve...)

nothing is wrong with that at all, i think that being able to belive in god is great thing for a lot of people but when u use the bible as a "this is what happened" or a "this is wrong cause the bible says so" as if it is the literal answer to the questions of life is jsut being ignorant.

if you believe in the bible as a road map for life you need to read it all the way through instead of letting other people tell you what it says and means...im tired of hearing "but my preach said"...dont be a lazy pathetic bum...hell i know all these people that read the old testament and say hey you arent supposed to eat pork....but in the new testament it says that the old laws no longer apply and that the greatest commandment is to love you neighbor, love yourself, and love your god above all else...so now its ok to eat pork but then i get these shmucks telling me i cant have a tattoo because the old testament say i cant...fuck you...the basic purpose of the bible was to let people know they need to learn to get along...NOT judge others because they arent like you...wow this is a long post...hell thats what just about every holy book is trying to convey...love...peace...brotherhood...

in religious education class me and a girl read out part of a play called len chimbleys dream
she played len and i played god (note the teacher knew i didn't believe in god and thought that if i read i would suddenly believe or maybe it was just because i was the only actor in the class at the time) anyway in that it was saying the reason we can't see god and don't have any proof that god exists is because god is everything and everyone
i personally think that the play was written by some religous nut trying to make athiests believe in god
just so you know that teacher left for new zealand to be with her boyfriend because she was carrying his baby outside of marriage (funny because it was a catholic school and as we know catholics despise sex before marriage unless you're a priest)

If my former school district capitulates to the religious nuts so that creationism and intelligent design get taught in science class, I'm going to protest that math be taught with the Pi=3 theory.
There are many different views about the value of pi, many mathematicians think it equals 3.1415... but pi=3 is also a legitamate idea... I can imagine it now.

Congrats to everyone who has posted in this thread.
You've all managed to have a thread go on a debate while all taking the same side. Everyone is anti-bible and you've all managed to discuss this to a great extent.
Now let's focus on something with differing opinions? ;)

Dr Arbitrary, how funny it is that you are so stuck on the Pi thing. In fact, if I didn't know any better, I'd say you're stuck on it and it's the only truly valuable thing you have to add to this topic. I say this thread needs one stipulation: you read the Bible first before posting. Otherwise, you're just as useless as someone mass posting that the Bible "indirectly" says Pi = 3 and offering not a single shread of evidence to support it.
What's the lesson of this? Don't read your anti-God books that only present one side of the story, because that's exact what this thread is. And if you read any studies on teens today, you'll see that while they say they are their own person, it's actually society that has compounded thousands of days of its views into their tiny little heads. Thus, for you South Park fans, "has warped their tiny, fragile little minds." Read the Bible and form your own opinion, or don't read it and don't speculate on what you think it is.

Scaletail to the rescue! How about promoting incest and then later condemning it, direct literal translations to kill any member of the wiccan religion, and its lovely hipocracy like the damnation of one of it's very own greatest HEROS (Yep, king david. 10th generation decended of a bastard child. Guess what, look it up, to the 10th generation of bastards they all go to hell).

Fuck you. I have read the bible. Sorry about the double post though.
Kings 7:23
He made the Sea of cast metal, circular in shape, measuring ten cubits from rim to rim and five cubits high. It took a line of thirty cubits to measure around it.
Circumference = Diameter * Pi.
Circumference=30
Diameter=10
30=10*Pi
(divide both sides by 10)
3=Pi
Pi=3
There, happy?
I think you are misunderstanding my stance on the bible. I think that the Bible is incapable of proving the existence of God. Until a proof for God is found, the Bible can serve no useful function. I personally hope someone proves that God exists, eternal life sounds cool, but until then...

If you knew anything of the Bible, you'd see the radical change of things from the Old Testament to the New Testament. Even knew laws are given to the people. I'm not a great Bible scholar, but I at least recognize the simple points the Bible tries to convey. One of those being that Jesus brought revelations to the people of that age that changed how Christianty was approached.

I've had that arguement thrown at me before. But ask yourself this: If god is supposed to be perfect, don't you think he'd have gotten it right the first time around? And don't say men wrote it...occording to the Old Testament (and yes I did read it, part of my family is VERY devout christian) the time the bible was written, God would bring some SERIOUS wrath to anyone who didn't write it the way he invisioned.

Dr Arbitrary, no need to get vulgar here, if you can't handle the discussion then just walk away. Unfortunately, once again I find your point moot, however. I'll share with you the definition of "circular."
cir·cu·lar (sûr'kyə-lər)
adj.
1.Of or relating to a circle.
2.a.Shaped like or nearly like a circle; round.
b.Moving in or forming a circle.
3.Circuitous; roundabout: took a circular route to the office.
4.Using a premise to prove a conclusion that in turn is used to prove the premise: a circular argument.
5.Defining one word in terms of another that is itself defined in terms of the first word.
6.Addressed or distributed to a large number of persons.
Let me point out to you a few very key parts of the definition:
"Shaped like or nearly like a circle; round."
"relating to a circle."
Never says it's a perfect circle, plus let me also inform you that when pi was first discovered, it was incorrectly calculated, even by ancient "non-believiers" simply due to the fact that they lacked the mathematical calculability to figure it out. It was originally calculated as 3.18.
I look forward to more of your arguments. :)

Still can't argue that David is in hell. (According to the Bible) he WAS the 10th descendant of a bastard, and when he died, that WAS a rule in the bible. Even if he didn't stay, that would mean the one who can't make mistakes, God, made a mistake. Hehehe.

Scaletail, in response to you, the answer is that there was no way to receive full forgiveness for your sins before Jesus. God will not accept sinners and before, instead of just striking anyone who sinned dead, he had made a covenant with Noah never to do that again after the flood. The laws of Moses which God gave to Moses to record were ways to release people from the bondage of their sin, not to purify them or "wipe their slate clean."

So basically you're agreeing with me that David would be in hell cause he's the 10th descendant of a bastard, despite all he did in the name of God?

How can I know where David went after he died? It wasn't my decision and I wasn't around for it, so I surely can't tell you. But remember, even though David did a lot for God, he also was an adulterer and a murder, and he knew what he was doing the entire time. Think back to the Ten Commandments...

The temple of Solomon dates to 950 BC
The egyptian rhind papyrus estimates the value of pi to be 3.16 in 1650 BC
Here's a different translation:
And he made a molten sea, ten cubits from the one brim to the other: it was round all about, and his height was five cubits: and a line of thirty cubits did compass it about. (I Kings 7, 23)
"Shaped like or nearly like a circle; round."
"relating to a circle."
I assume that that means that it would be eliptical to some degree, That would only further increase the innacuracy of the measurment (by increasing the ratio between the diameter of the pool and the perimeter)
I can't post the equation here (because of formatting problems though)
