Now I have a somewhat older harddrive in my computer, maybe around 2-3 yrs?. Now today I go to restart my computer yet it hangs at the bios splash screen. Ive tried to boot the machine with the harddrive disconnect and it boots fine which leads me to believe my harddrive may have seen its end.... any suggestions?

Make sure the little swith on your new old HD (the one that doesn't work; the recent) is set on Slave. Then tell us if it works.

Pop your case open and see if a cable came loose. If you turn the computer back on and it's still not booting, then maybe it's time to pop another one in there or bring the drive to some place like CDW to at least get your files recovered.

"Hard drives generally last 5 to 7 years" straight from my hardware text book. Irony, lets see, your HD blew in 3 years, my friends brand new HD blew in 1 year, and I just sold a PC with a 10 year old HD that was still working fine. it was a 1 gig. not even a bad cluster on it. the HD in my old 1997 computer lasted till earily 2005 or 8 years, and it didn't die, but it was giving my problems (80% of the time during boot up, a message would come up saying i possibly had bad clusters and neede dto do surface scan, it would never find any) so i replaced it. i still have it and as far as i know it still works.

Conclusion

They just don't make them like they used to.

If it's gateway, it'll blow in 6 months or less! lol I know people who had brand new computers, had already replaced their hard drives at least 2-3 times in one year. Talk about sad! Drives aren't stable anymore unless you pay for the really high tech, guaranteed to last stuff...I did have hard drives that lasted quite a while, hell the macs @ my dad & uncle's business (one is probably close to 20 years old - give or take) and the hard drive just blew last summer. But up until then, none of the computers that run/store the programs for the machines ever crapped out (one of the newer ones but that one's also about 12 years old). So yeah, it all depends on when you buy/bought it, where you get/got it from, etc.

Actually, this is a growing problem on all fronts of hardware.
Now that technology is near reaching its limitations, they start to think about spending more time on making them cheaper. More cheap material, less ingenuity.
the lifespan of harddrives as a whole has been severily reduced, from 5-10 years, to 1-2 years. And don't get me started on optical readers in CD/DVD-readers. :P
