Do whales lay eggs? Jan. 10th, 2006 @ 03:28 PM Reply

I didn't think they did until I read this recent article. One example passage is: "We also saw a whale egg close to shore, in which Scotty, the 1st mate, explained
that whale eggs always end up on shore". And then this article which says "If people have any issues with battery farming whales, they could buy the free range whale eggs for a premium". If whales are mammals, that means the platypus is not the only mammal that lays eggs. Did these 2 articles make simple mistakes or is a widely known factoid completely wrong?

Everything I ever read and was told is that whales have live births.

Thats bull because last year in school I saw a live video of a killer whale giving birth and there was no egg involved. Its probably a shark egg :)

I'd say live birth.

Speaking of eggs, how do chickens manage to squeeze them out without cracking them? Hmm.

Of course they do not lay eggs, but they start out as eggs, just like people.

I'm pretty sure whales don't lay eggs, but the killer whale is actually a dolphin, not a whale. I don't think whales lay eggs, though. The writers probobly just made a mistake.

That's because they are structurally sound. Go to your kitchen, get an egg out, and put it in your palm. Then squeeze as hard as possible. You'll be suprised when it doesn't break.

Whales are mamals, otherwise they wouldn't have to surface to breathe every now and again. And everybody should by now know that all mamals give live birth, liek you and me for instance. We were born live, not hatched out of some egg!

Just because it's a mammal doesn't mean it can't lay eggs. Playpuses and echindnas lay eggs, but are still considered mammals due to the fact that the mothers nurse their young (aka breastfeed)

But no, they do not lay eggs. It was probably a shark egg sac or something.
