Actually, Noob Saibot is a shadow ninja who is the reincarnate of the late Sub-Zero, killed by Scorpion in the first Mortal Kombat tournament.

Noob Saibot is the original Sub Zero turned wraith. His first appearance was in MK2 as a hidden character you could fight but not play as. You could first play as him in UMK3. He gets his name from two of the creators of the games names backwards, Boon and Tobias. Also you can see these two names spelled regular in the Subway stage in MK3. Now where's my cookie.
Oh, and my favorite lesser known character is PLok.
