I come in from work, take off and hang up the modern chains of the worker (my tie) and join my wee sister in the living room. She's got the old disney channel on - Recess too - so like a big kid, I sit and watch an episode. Then this other thing came on after it - "The Weekenders" or something. After watching these two shows I noticed how they lay on racial stereotypes pretty heavily.
Recess - the black lad, Vince. He's hip, cool and most of all an amazingly athlete - everything a stereotype of a black kid should be, without getting into the whole ghetto thing. Then you have Gus and the big fat Lad - both blonde, white and complete and utter shit. I mean, it's like one of those eighties comedian jokes "black dudes drive a car like this, white dudes drive a car like this"
Same went for this weekenders programme, I don't know their names but the basic formula applied - cool athletic black guy, nerdy blonde white guy. I pointed it out to my older sister and she just said "well, the other cartoon is just copying Recess - it isn't neccessarily a stereotype".
But then I thought back to the crap I used to watch, Doug - shit white guy (he plays the banjo for Christ's sake) and Skeeter - smooth black athlete. Hey Arnold - look at Gerald, he's cool as fuck - also sings soul music. And the little asian friend of Helgas is always running around with a calculator...because she's an asian stereotype I guess.
I finish by mentioning one last guy - Scrooge MacDuck.
