I come in from work, take off and hang up the modern chains of the worker (my tie) and join my wee sister in the living room. She's got the old disney channel on - Recess too - so like a big kid, I sit and watch an episode. Then this other thing came on after it - "The Weekenders" or something. After watching these two shows I noticed how they lay on racial stereotypes pretty heavily.

Recess - the black lad, Vince. He's hip, cool and most of all an amazingly athlete - everything a stereotype of a black kid should be, without getting into the whole ghetto thing. Then you have Gus and the big fat Lad - both blonde, white and complete and utter shit. I mean, it's like one of those eighties comedian jokes "black dudes drive a car like this, white dudes drive a car like this"

Same went for this weekenders programme, I don't know their names but the basic formula applied - cool athletic black guy, nerdy blonde white guy. I pointed it out to my older sister and she just said "well, the other cartoon is just copying Recess - it isn't neccessarily a stereotype".

But then I thought back to the crap I used to watch, Doug - shit white guy (he plays the banjo for Christ's sake) and Skeeter - smooth black athlete. Hey Arnold - look at Gerald, he's cool as fuck - also sings soul music. And the little asian friend of Helgas is always running around with a calculator...because she's an asian stereotype I guess.

I finish by mentioning one last guy - Scrooge MacDuck.

That's the point, it's teaching them that the stereotypes are true, but they don't know about the actual stereotyping yet. :|

Well, most of the time anyways.

This is very true and has present in cartoons ever since their advent. It's interesting to note, how society makes such a fuss about how PC everything needs to be in regards to racial stereotyping, and here theryare spoon-feeding it to their children.

Cartoons suck ass anyway. Besides Family guy. Family Guy kicks ass. Cartoons besides FG should be banned, for enforcing racism.

Well I guess this should prepare kids for the fact that people often live up to their stereotypes. If I would of payed more attention to the deeper messages I might not be so suprised that 90% of the black kids in my school are stereotypes. Also Skeeter isn't athletic. Chalky is.

Almost all kid shows have racial stereotypes. I remember the cartoons I watched when I was 6 or so and now I think about how much the sterotyped on them.

No, you're just saying that because Family Guy is the only cartoon you like. I'm not a big fan of cartoons myself, but I can make a list of cartoons which aren't racist. The Simpsons for example. Next time think about other people and not just what you think.

Recess is a very racist show, yet it's funny. I like the episode where King Bob rules that every negro fourth grader must be crucified. Hilarity ensues!

Some of you seem to think that enforcing stereotypes and being racist are the same thing. That is wrong.

That's even worse to give shit like that to kids. Sad thing is, I used to watch that show, so that must be why I'm so prejudice.

There is a reason stereotypes exist, they have truth in them, and I don't see why people always assume they are negative. It’s just another way to group people, we as humans love grouping things and will till the end of time. Also did anyone else see that post with a link showing fear of people different from you is part of evolution and a protection mechanism? I am not saying it is right I am just saying it is there and will be in some form, so why wouldn't cartoons contain it, regular TV does as well.

I hate tv. Either shows have ALL white people and only two blacks to avoid racism or it's all black people with a few whites.

The black characters have big red lips and pitch black skin. I smell racism in the far east.
