Teen Charged in Infant Daughter's Death

A 13-year-old Ohio boy was charged with murder in the beating death of his infant daughter.

A 13-year-old boy has been charged with murder in the beating death of his 8-week-old daughter.

Cuyahoga County prosecutors believe the boy beat his infant daughter Diamond Miller to death early Sunday morning. The boy told police the baby was sleeping in bed with her mother, who is 14, when he noticed the infant's head was wedged between the bed and the wall.

According to a police report, the suspect said he picked the baby, who started to spit up "white stuff" and then stopped breathing.

Miller was pronounced dead at Rainbow Babies and Children's Hospital. A coroner determined the child died of massive injuries to the head and abdomen and were most likely caused by a fist.

"There was a laceration and tearing of the liver, brusing of the brain and internal hemorrhaging," Cuyahoga County coroner Elizabeth Balraj told The Associated Press.

'Who Can Explain This?'

Police arrested the boy on Monday.

With his father and mother at his side, he pleaded not guilty in juvenile court on Tuesday to murder and reckless child endangerment. Prosecutors have already requested and received permission to collect blood, DNA and tissue samples from the suspect.

"Who can explain this? I cannot. Nevertheless, I am charged with the responsibility to objectively look at the facts and apply the law," Cuyahoga County prosecutor Bill Mason told The Associated Press.

The mother of the dead infant said the suspect had accepted responsibility for her pregnancy and encouraged her to have the baby. However, she also claimed that he had confessed to the slaying and she could never forgive him.

The suspect will be held without bond in a juvenile detention center as he awaits his next hearing in two weeks. He could not be charged as an adult: under Ohio law, a suspect must be 14 before being charged in adult court.
