Over the past 30 years there have been so many names to call people who have an abundance of melanin in there skin.
African-Americans
Black-Americans
Black People
Afro-Americans
The NAACP (national american association of colored people) refers to them as "Coloreds" (their words not mine)
The UNCF (united negro college fund) refers to them as "Negroes" (again, their words not mine)
What's the most politcally correct name to refer to them...as I often find myself at a loss to come up with the right word.

Most politically correct for ANYONE would be 'human'. Black, white, yellow, red, Islamic, Bhuddist, Pagan, Christian, gay, straight, communist, capitalist, transgendered, Russian, Canadian, Japanese; I think you get the point; are all just human.

Yeah, I just say black. Only because if you run into a black dude from another country, it's kind of ignorant to call them African-American.

That's nonsensical. We, as humans, must have descriptors to reference things.
I might say 'My friend, the accountant'...and America accepts that. So why, when I say 'My friend, the athiest', or 'My friend, this black guy' is it so socially unacceptable?
Is it ok to reference people by name, occupation, and gender...but not ok to reference them by heritage, race, or ethnicity?
This is a question I actually want answers to, as oppossed to the sarcastic, point-proving questions I usually ask.
I swear by my life - and my love of it - that I will never live my life for the sake of another man, or ask another man to live his for mine.

Just call them black, it's just fucking annoying otherwise and makes you seem even more of a cracker if you call them afro or african americans.

African American isn't even accurate. Some black people have deeper roots in America than me and nobody makes special terms for me. I know a kid who's mother is white and she was born in Nigeria, nobody calls them African Americans.
Think you're pretty clever...

no offense at all against black people but im tired of a lot of the african-americans getting all anal about getting called the "n" word please if they were so made they wouldnt say it in front of there friends you know? of course not all black people do this i have a lot of black friends but there cool when something about there origins comes up and if i was black i would get pissed of too if some random white called me the "n" word so i guess it really just depends on how you use the word (perferable not at all)

How about take a national survey? Seriously, guys. Why do we get hung up on semantics!!!! African-American, black, colored, negro, cracker, honkey, white, caucasian, Asian whatever. It doesn't matter, for crap's sake. But for the sake of convenience, how about calling black people black, or, if they prefer, African-(insert nationality here).

Should I be offended if someone called me white when most of my ancestors were Native Americans?
I look white, so I have no problem with it, why should black people have a problem being called...black?

No. We need descriptors. That black kid, that white kid, whatever. Its just the way things are and the only people who have problems with it are wierdos in my opinion.

Even color blind people can tell the difference between black and white.

Black is the best, if they whine that they want to be called African American, just let them know that you didn't want to make assumptions because people with dark skin come from all around the world, not just Africa.

Damned right. There's far too much emphasis on color.

there is a different term to use in different countries really, over here in the united kingdom you dont really go around calling people black as it is seen as a rather taboo word like the N one. Now if you go down to south Africa my parents went on holiday their and asked the hotel manager how many coloured people work their(god knows why im not to sure what he was talking about) but the man(who was black or whatever you want to say) starts to raise his voice acting as if saying someone is coloured out there is a taboo word(which it was) and says that(i can still remember as it was hilarious) "I am black sir, black not coloured" Was really funny in my view but you see each country has its own versions of what is acceptable and what is not.

At the moment, race is not being used with any efficiency to track down criminals. For example, whenever witnesses claim that a crime is commited by a black man, it only prompts the police to "Round up the usual n_____s." If part of an ethnic minority, a criminal's race usually protects them.
