Newgrounds has been on the net for a long time and in this time there have been alot of clones wich provided the same services as NG and added a little something of their own.
Most of these sites/portals die after a while.

What do you think that distinguishes NG from the others?

I'm pretty sure that the BBS has nothing to do with Newgrounds' success.

The fact that you can play games, watch toons, send in your own creative work, have (unintelligent) conversations on the BBS, and contribute to the site altogether (voting). And this vast system was founded by some kid from Philadelphia.

Newgrounds has pretty much million of flash. Plus it has"mature" section which probably attracts tons of 12 years old every day.

I recall Tom or Wade stating a while ago that 'Hentai' ranks high amongst the Portal's most numerous/frequent searches.

Probably beacause any sites like this are instantally ridiculed and crushed into dust by us the loyal fans. only a few make it because they are lucky.

I'd have to say that Newgrounds.com's success is based on a multitude of things, some of which I'll mention, most I won't, because it would take longer then I have the patience for.

User Based Content

Most sites out there that are even comparable to Newgrounds in size, have a limited, or no actual system to upload new Flash to the site. Anyone can come to NG and upload a movie or game. Try doing that at sites that are as large as NG, and legitimate.

Free Use

Larger sites, especially ones made by corporations, usually ask for a membership fee. Anyone out there can come to NG and showcase their work, or join the community.

Originality

First, or I should say, one of the first portal systems on the internet. It's not really quite clear whether NG was THE first Flash Portal out there, but it is, without a doubt, the oldest now at least.

BBS

Let's face it, anyone who is familiar with BBS's knows that 90% of the web uses the same damn thing, just different "themes". Everyone has seen a BBS at some point, that has pointless Forums, no limits on Sig size, and no limits on Font size. Fucking pathetic. I'm personally fucking tired of seeing PHPBB, or Nuke, etc, etc systems everywhere I go. It's even sadder when large businesses use it for their site. NG's BBS is clean, well thought out, one of a kind, and organized. It's basically a sort of glue for the site to, it keeps people connected, and gives a part of the site, anyone can participate in, regardless of flash skills.

Homegrown

"No, it wasn't made by some giant company - just some dumb kid." - Tom

Let's face it, corporate sites like Atom Films cater to what's popular, they only care about money, and don't give two shit's about actual content. NG has such a wide spectrum of content, from some of the biggest rising stars in the flash community, to some of the worst. I know I enjoy all of them, whether I'm laughing because a stick movie is so horrible it's actually humorous, or whether it's shit that deserves to be on Adult Swim on CN.

Games

Birthplace to Alien Hominid, Pico, and thousands of free games that are a notch above the rest. There is literally something from every genre of gaming here, that's always available to anyone.

That's what makes NG so successful.

What I meant to say. The BBS here is unique.

Not just that, but this BBS actually blends with the site, it looks like it belongs here. Unlike almost everywhere else, which usually use a conflicting layouts and colors for their BBS.

You already said it yourself - NG did it first. They were in the right spot at the right time, and responded excellently. Those you mentioned which copy NG are nothing more: copies, and their death is as inevitable as it is unsuprising.

NG is actually incorporated, which annoys Tom since he has to pay taxes twice - but by eliminating unlimited liability, it's probably worth it.

The biggest thing to me is the portal. The fact that we control what gets on the site and gain juicy exp and blam/protection points in the process. Also, you can upload your own crap and get it viewed by at least a couple of hundred people even if it's the worst thing ever. And get feedback.

Becuase it wouldn't work without us, unlike other sites NG is completely user orientated, we submit and we vote, the two main components of the site.

And NG was of course first.

I kow what you mean. Just take a look at this site, and check their forums. It's as if the forum doesn't look like it has anything to do with the site.

What I meant to say was it's not owned by billionaires in big black suits.

It's kinda annoying that Tom gets most/all of the credit for the site etc. Sure he founded this site, but still.., because, isn't liljim pretty much responsible for everything what NG is today about, i mean, he has done most of teh code for the flash portal, and probably the BBS also.

liljim and Stamper are responsible for the way the site looks now, true, but, this is Tom's site, and he is extraordinary at what he does with Flash.
