There is actually a religious explanation for the number 666. It is actually known as the 'number of the beast'. but the reason i spose a lot of people like it is because they think it makes them tough.

Well, in my school I have learned that 6 is the number of Satan because most bad things in the Bible happened in 6's. Why people enjoy it, I don't know. Maybe they're evil.

it's the 'number of the beast', according to the last book of the bible (apocalyps; the end of the world but with a lot of codes etc.). It doesn't really mean anything, since the beast was (or I believe that it was) the roman emperor. In hebrew every number has a symbol that's also a letter. that emperors name got 666 when counted up...
of course, people like itto show they don't like church, or just to look though...

The real reason why 666 is the numbereth of the beast is because when he went to the banketh to sort out his lease of hell they did say:
"Please take a number and I'll be right with you"
And lo and behold, the beast drew the number 666, and to this day that has been his number... until he has to update his lease, which is when it will change.
