(Action Script) Making a Character

Hey I want to make my character jump, but i cna't figure out how i'd get him to jump using variables and such. Could someone perhaps share some code with me on how i'd go about this. And I've seen jumps where u have to hold the key to make it jump, I'd much mroe prefer one where u simply hit the key and it does the jump and can still move left or right while in the air.
