I'm building a computer and I'm getting this motherboard:
http://www.newegg.co..item=N82E16813130491
large picture here:

This motherboard said ATX compatible. So I went to Best Buy today and bought an ATX case.
take note of the ports on the back of that motherboard. Mouse and keyboard at the top, followed by monitor and parallel port. However, the layout on the back of my case looks like this: (not my actual case)
http://www.newegg.co..mputer+Case+-+Retail
notice that at the top are mouse and keyboard, but after that is usb and ethernet, then monitor and parallel. I checked out other motherboards and other cases, and both seem to follow those designs, respectively. Am I looking at it wrong? or will I have to take out/modify that whole back panel on my case?
also, a dumb question. Does that motherboard I linked to come with the processor as well? I can't figure out if it actually comes with it, or just "supports" it. I suck at computer shopping : (
ok, I was just informed that the motherboard will come with its own metal panel that fits itself. Good deal. I was also informed that my processor must be ordered separate, which is what I was afraid of =(

You'll also have to get a video card, memory, and a hard drive to add with that. My recommendations:
2 160GB(So 320GB Total) hard drives in a RAID-0, which is better for performance...
Newegg.com $169 Including S/H
or you can just go with a solo-drive and get it for $84.50
An Athlon 64 3500+, which comes with a cooling device so you don't have to worry about that. It is also manufactured with the new, smaller process which inputs less voltage, and as such emits less heat.
Newegg.com $202 Including S/H
1GB of Ram Newegg.com $82 Including S/H
Radeon X800GTO (I'm an ATI fan..) Newegg.com $147 Including S/H
There are of course cheaper options, as well as more expensive ones.

I hope you understand what you're doing. Forgive me but to even think that the motherboard would come with its CPU for that price is enough to make me suspicious.

ha ha yeah. Just make sure to check the fsp and of course the type itself (SDRAM, DDR etc)

Don't worry, I know how to put computer parts together. I guess for some reason it just clicked in my mind that the motherboard and processor would come together. I've got everything else picked out-
MSI AMD athlon 64 motherboard, socket 939
AMD athlon 64 Venice 3200 socket 939 processor
2 sticks corsair 512 MB ddr 400 (184 pin) sdram
ATI radeon x700 pro graphics card, pci express
Seagate 80GB serial ATA hard drive
ASUS dvd burner
SAMSUNG floppy drive
already have the mouse, keyboard, case, and monitor
< $1000
cool so far. Except the graphics card doesnt sound too promising

I read several reviews that said it could play HL2 at full settings, so that's good enough for me. I'm not a big pc gamer, I mostly want something to aid my flash work and any video editing I (plan to) get into. I've never had a name brand video card in any of my other computers anyway

There's only 3 main variations today of RAM: DDR-SDRAM, SDRAM, and DDR2-SDRAM. That's it.

ive hardly ever seen combinations where you buy cpu with the motherboard, you almost always buy them seperately mainly, not when you want to buy what you want, shops will always do combinations where you buy one and get the other, but id much rather buy the motherboard i want and then buy the processor i want, neither company itself is going to do a combination since im pretty sure AMD dont make their own motherboards or Intel

And then you have double-sided, DDR400, DDR500, ....

Add 400$ for WinXP 64 bit.
Or you can always get Linux.
Haha. Linux. Desktop.

There's no point in getting WinXP 64 until 64 bit OS's become more mainstream.

Nah, I'm just sticking with regular XP. The boosted performance will be enough for me until like WR said, 64 bit OS's are more common

you'll probably never use that.
might be more worth your while getting one of these instead
