Whats the difference between it. Almost everything I listen to comes under metal and rock, but I really cant tell the different between the two. I suppose it can be arguable at times.
But really, how are they different?

If you spent a minute to just get information:
"The focus on musicianship in metal is much more marked than in other forms of rock, and there is a great emphasis on speed and 'heaviness'." Read all about it.
What type of rock music are you reffering to? About Rock music
There. Nothing wikipedia.org can't solve.

Well...
Rock usually is sort of soft-ish, with sometimes soft/hard bridges (You know what they are right?)
Heavy Metal is basically, All hard throughtout, and most of screaming, etc. They have some Metal-Melodic stuff. And yeah, guitar playing is usually uber duber fast.
Both are good, but if you take the time to think, there big difference.

Wrong.
Rock music and heavy metal have so many different styles these days. For example, One rock band could be soft as hell, and play with distorted guitars, then another rock band (like Orange Goblin) could be heavy as fuck, but have a decent vocalist, with catchy riffs rather than over the top shouting.
Heavy metal has so many variations too. Check out Anthrax with John Bush on vocals. It is heavy metal, but the vocals are more Rock style. It's all about the music.
If the music makes you wanna beat the shit out of some dude, then it's metal. If the music makes you want to relax with a beer/joint/LSD, then it's rock music!!!

Hmmm... This is a tough one indeed. I am a big Heavy Metal/Rock Fan and I will tell you all that I know about these two. They have both really branched out from where they orignially began. Rock in the begining was softer then Metal but now it was like the two have melted together in some songs.
Difference in the past? Yes, easy to tell
Difference Now? Somewhat hard to tell...
Unless of course you are comparing Papa Roach to Nun Slaughter then it would be really easy to tell which is rock and which is Metal.

Slipknot is metal as much as you would like to deny it :P
But hey, if you really wanted to split hairs, you could say that Devourment and Cumgun aren't metal, because they stray equally as far (if not more) from the roots of the genre, as much as Slipknot does ;)

^ Exactly
Slipknot is defidently leaning towards Metal in my opinion.
Once again it is all a matter of opinion. Music producers no longer have any idea of what genre to put their bands under.
But who really cares?
If it's good music then buy it. Don't be one of those "I only listen to Metal so down with Rock Music!" people.

I never considered Slikpnot to be a real metal band... To me they've always been what I call "Teenager Metal", music for kids who are just getting into metal, that havn't heared any other bands yet. BUT, ever since their last album, when I heared guitar solo's, I started to respect them a little more than I did.

I don't think rock is even it's own genre. It's just a big tree with a lot of sub genres. Maybe the really old stuff from the 50's could be considered rock.

yeah i reckon the original rock of the 50's n 60's is rock, metal is just heavier. Slipknot are metal, and if musicianship is a factor then they are overall shit an good, as joey jordison is an excellent drummer but the rest of the band are pretty shit. But in metal you can get somewhere if you're shit long as you got a heart (slipknot) or a sense of humour (gwar anyone?)
So if musician ship defines whether its metal or rock, in rock everyone needs a mediocre skill to get some rock, the more skill the more rockin.
But for metal there needs to be either no skill for sheer rawness or someone who's great for jaw dropping awesomeness.
Rock is more cohesive than metal, n the style of play for most instruments is less hard and shredding, tho perhaps not on bass for some bands, not sure.
Mostly, metal drummers often kick arse (pantera, sepultura) or have a funky twist in a (hip hop) style, (deftones/korn have done this style) which also can be good.
Metal guitarists either sludge n sound dirty, (sludge metal, grind, metal in general really), n only do that, but in my opinion the best ones do both sludge and really cheesy or crazy solos, like (RIP) Dimebag.
So shit metal takes less skill than rock, you could do something thats borderline, just on the side of metal on the metal/rock line and it could be mediocre metal.
But artists like pantera n metallica when they dont fuck up are the best things to be watching for sheer skill in musicianship n songwriting.
Oh yeah, the other main factor
DIIIIIISSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSTTTTTOOOOOOOOOOOORR
RRRRRRRRRRTTTTTTTIIIIIIIIIIOOOOOOOOONNNNNN
NNNNNNN.
Rock's is a bit more melodic n nicer for some people, tho i prefer metal for sheer nastyness, which i like :)
