it's not so much the user as it is the portal; in the golden days (as I like to think of them) there were far more submissions to the portal, and more correct judgments about them as well; less user mass voting for a point, usually the save.
you may have seen the B/P ranks 51+ lists and the star pace notes, although they haven't been in frequent use lately; star pace is 1,000 B/P points or more per week. so in better portal times, it would be more common to see.
Even I became from around 100 B/P points to 30,000 in a little under a year in 05'-06'. But now it's more of a hard task now since the portal has nearly dried up, and a daily pace of 142 points a day, as required, means you may not sleep, you may not leave your computer, and you may not stop refreshing, as well as succum to spam voting and get every one right.
That is a high price to pay.
