the only thing that makes an american an american is citizenship. there is such a diversity in this country that you can't classify an american by certain personality traits.

Replace "sex" with rape (America has the highest rape rate in the industrail world)

Yep, Bombing children's hospitals from a mile up in the sky, flying away and blaming it on Saddam is REAL brave.
Notice how our "Brave" special forces get their asses kicked all the time...

Yes, Espically to things that have nothing to do with America.

America is a melting pot as opposed to Canda, which is a a multi culural society. When immigrants come to Canada they keep much of there own culture, in other words there is less conformity. Individualism, if you will.
Man you should lay off the chronic. I'm really curious as to where you get your information. Most of what you have posted in this subject is way off. Are you a sociologist who specializes in the U.S. way of life? Perhaps you have extensively studied us. Or maybe, like many Americans, you believe everything you hear and read.

The theory that is more supported now is the "salad bowl" or "fruit bowl" theory. We are a country of many cultures, races, ethnicities and history. We dont "melt" and surrender any of our traits, instead we keep our individuality while absorbing traits from others over generations. The "Melting pot" concept has not been used since about 1967.
It's about time someone who knows what they're talking about chimmed in!!! Kudos to you. You have obviously taken a sociology class or two.

Yes Canadians have "their own lives, their own views" ..... and we know our heritage......
That certainly can't hold for all Canadians. Just as your narrow views don't hold for every American.
I want to know why you think that Americans have lost their strive to be individuals, but Canadians have not. Is it the government or what? I think the major cause for people losing themselves is mass media, and in particular, the television. Commercials and shows span a nation, and subconciously or conciously people that watch TV will start to look and act like those on TV. If you need proof to back it up, I'm sure you could find studies, but during the 50s many housewives in America looked and acted exactly like Donna Reed.
Anyway, Canada has television and believes in commercialism. So I ask again, what seperates Canadians from Americans and empowers them to grasp their individuality.

We have laws in our charter of rights protecting different cultures, mainly intended for the french Canada has now come to embraced many cultures with the same attitude.
We arn't Americans, just becuase we have similar media in no way makes us Americans; in fact thats rather ignorant to suggest. I can't explain why Canadian culture is different anymore then I could explain how ethics varry from person to person.

Well, many Americans are overwhelmingly full of pride for their past heritages. They certainly don't need laws to protect that. As far as past histories go, most Americans fully embrace them, and are entirely proud of being from another culture as well as American.
I understand it is hard to explain, but I still don't see any reason why things should be so different between Americans and Canadians. It can't be the few laws that require both the english and french translation.
Also, I wasn't saying that you were Americans because of media, but the effects of mass media on humans have been shown. I doubt the Canadian public is immune to this, and I feel that there probably is a great deal of individuality being lost even if you say otherwise.

Bullshit. Sixty-one percent? What's your source, or did you just make that up?
sex orientedReplace "sex" with rape (America has the highest rape rate in the industrail world)
It's ABSURD to steriotype Americans based on a statistic like that. What percentage of Americans are rapists? Besides, different countries have different criminal court systems, which can fudge crime statistics a bit.
braveYep, Bombing children's hospitals from a mile up in the sky, flying away and blaming it on Saddam is REAL brave.
This didn't happen. YOu expect us to belive that American forces INTENTIONALLY bomed a hospital and then OFFICIALLY CLAIMED that "Saddam did it"? And that YOU know ALL about it? Ridiculous! Bone-headed! Come back if you have some valid arguments.

Today’s typical american makes his or her money by working hard. I think a typical American strives to have the best life and makes their own decisions. A typical American is supportive of their government’s decisions but will protest if they see the need.
I'm not a typical American

I'd rather be fat lazy and greedy than be an ethnocentric hipocrit. Most of you have not met an American yet alone lived with one. And to claim taht we force our culture on people it just an outright lie, if you ever went to a big city you would know what I am talking about.
