Bass is not limited to the exact way that you happen to play it. There is nothing wrong with a 12 string bass, and there is nothing wrong with using a pick. Don't be such a bunch of elitist wankers.

Real men play bass with nothing but their nose, a tissue and a cardboard pick.

Yes thank you!

Btw, most bassists that use their fingers play Punk/Ska/Funk/Jazz... Using a pick is perfectly acceptable...

Ok, fine, some bassists use a pick, they SHOULD use their fingers. That is the way it was meant to be played, plus it gives a better sound with the fingers. A deep melodic hum with the fingers, rather than a annoying clicking noise with a pick. but in this day and age it is acceptable to play with a pick, dont know why, it just is. Hell sometimes I even use a pick, if I have to.

Plus what I said about Paul McCartney, I like most of the Beatles Music, I do, but his bass lines are very easy, bit like Mark Hoppus'. Therefore he is obviously not all that good at the bass. I'm not mocking him, just saying he could have made his bass lines harder in order to make the music even better.

Also Most punk bands use picks for their music. Mainly because punk music is easy to play for both the guitaists. Therefore the bassist is a bit "uneducated" in the bass, therefore uses a pick due to the fact that it is easier, or they just like that type of sound given off by a pick.

Also to what SWiTCH said, a 12 string bass is to inconvenient to play, too hard, plus you will never use all of the strings anyways.

So in closing, sorry we got off on the wrong foot Superman, I was having a bad day

There are a very select few bassists who can really use a pick, I would say that honestly. I prefer fingers, but probably because I've played with my fingers for 8 years, and that's all I know how to do. I got so delved into it, I use 3 fingers, and the Thumb Pick technique Victor Wooten uses.
I think playing with a pick isn't neccessarily an automatic sign of a bad bassist, but I do lose respect for most of them that do use one.

Also, saying Paul McCartney is a bad bassist is bullshit. You don't have to be all over your frets to be a good bassist, he was an amazing, and thats an understatement, an amazing songwriter. Probably one of the best. He's got more talent than most bassists do, he just didn't need to play everywhere to prove it.

Another thing, most of the best bassists out there can't read sheet music. But it's kind of a useful tool. If you can read sheet music, it's only going to help.

Out of the 8 years I've played the bass, I've heard some amazing players. Half were unable to read sheet music, and didn't know any of the names of the parts of a bass. They're just good musicians.

But I will say you're a shitty bassist if you can't slap:)

I never said he could write music all I said, and I stand by it, is that he isn't as good a bassist as he is suppose to be. His riffs aren't all that complex etc

Aha! John Petrucci!
I've seen that video before.
And again, pretty much the only thing you can do on that 12 string bass is double tap, but I guess in the right situation it'll work.

Good call, when i think of Ska i think of Punk which is why i put it there... But im not gonna lie there are a lot of brilliant punk bassists, the main one that comes to mind is Andy Flag...

I've heard Anti-Flag, and there's no denying he's the most talented punk bassist around. If there's one better, and there probably is (I'm not a big Punk bassist), then I haven't heard him.

You should try NOFX (if you haven't already). Fat Mike is my favorite bassist/songwriter.

Oh, well, you should hear the bass solo he does, it's really nice. I learned how to play it last night on a 4 string fretless Warwick Thumb, it's a little tough, but not too bad.

i play with my fingers or flamenco style i.e.; i play with my fingernails. sounds like a cross between plectrum and fingers. there need to be more bass guitarists like Les Claypool that stand out from behind the guitarists.

We are not a dying breed, but I agree with everything else.

If you like at some of the most inspirational bassists i can think of right now (Mike Balzary, informally Flea, or Larry Graham) you will see that playing bass is not boring, the sound is kickass and it is as important as the lead guitar.

As my bass teacher says, the bass conducts the music, it IS important.
