ah, you deserved it, you were the first one here to ever prove me wrong about something. And I asked another really good bassplayer on the mtvhell forum about all that weird stuff you named and he also said that stuff was about the toughest thing to play on bass. You sir, have won bass ;)

Haha, I haven't won anything, I just have a social life, and then a music life, and not in that order. It's just something I love to do, and I've played longer than you guys so don't be too overwhelmed. And yes, Victor Wooten is amazing. He's my inspiration and I hope one day I can play with him, because I've talked with him before.
I'm sending an application in next year for BATB(Bass At The Beach). Which is a Victor Wooten and Stephan Baily bass camp. I hope I get accepted.

and yeah, you were right, I was completely overwhelmed by your skill, I still have a LOT to learn, you made that even clearer. Thanks for that, maybe now I'll even get lessons for the first time =P

yeah, the first 2 months I played bass I picked up slap and the likes pretty quick so I didn't practice nearly as hard as I do now. I guess everyone needs a reality check once in awhile to set the pace on how good they wanna be.

the first time I heard Victor Wooten I wanted to cry. Haha, I felt like such a peon compared to the pull-offs and fingerings he did. So I just completely delved into bass, everything is bass to me. I'll hum things in my head at school, or tap out rhythems waiting somewhere. It's almost scary..

I had that feeling first when I saw Necrophagist tabs... good lord that's messed up, you got to admit, those guitars are SICK. But now (thanks to you) I see I really need more practise, haven't come to it a lot lately (school, exams bla bla)
But don't worry, I'll be back to completely pwn you in like 5 years or so =P

Haha, friendly competition is good. Very very good. Competition is what drove me to be what I am, I didn't want to be like all the other bassists in the area, because their bands didn't really include them in songs. It's like, the drummer and guitarists got together and wrote a song, and played it with the bassist and the bassist made up his part right there to go with theirs. I like bass to lead sometimes, but I also like counter-melodying with guitars.

Just keep up the practice. But just to give you an idea of what I put in, around 2-3 hours weekdays, 5-6 hours weekends.

That's how I started out the first year, I think that's why I progressed alot faster at first than other people I knew that also played. Hell, even when I coudn't sleep at night I just picked up my bass.
After that I bought an electric guitar and started to practise even more, because I HAD to outbest our current second guitarist, and after like 3/4 year I finally matched him... but recently I didn't have a reason to practise so much anymore, maybe when I get my new amp & guitar I'll finally put myself to start on the really difficult stuff. Wish me luck ;)

Ah, I've never really played an electric guitar. Never learned to use a pick. I hate bassists who use a pick, so a pick has never touched my strings. But I'll admit, I'd rather play an upright bass over an electric bass. The sound is 20x better on a standup.

In the 101 laws of metalbands there is also the law that the bass player is not allowed to use a pick ;)
It's simply not cool, only punk should be picked =P

No, punk shouldn't be picked. I hate pick using bass players, it just takes away part of the sound the bass has. They say, "I do it for speed". Learn Vic's thumb pick technique, it's better than using a plastic piece of crap to simulate your finger.

The only reason those "bassists" use picks is because they cant play with their hand, its a shit load easier to play with a pick.

I can play with a pick, it is faster but sound crappy, thats why i dont play wiht one :D

Every guy I've met who uses a pick I can play faster with my fingers. That's why I use three, to shut up the bassists who say, "Oh it's fast." Then I just do that. Or I slap with full set thumps, those are nice.
But you just can get in a groove with a pick.

I can play faster than a bassists with a pick, but how hard is it to play with three fingers? I have tried but couldn't be bothered to learn properly, how much benefit is there from learning to play with three fingers?

Well, a lot of it links back to theory, so I'll sum it up. I can play about 1.5 times faster than a person using 2 fingers can. Sometimes I use it to mute another string, or hit a lower note on a lower string, or repick a harmonic in a slower song. It can be used like your thumb in a slap song to get..whatever comes after a quadruple slap, i do that in double time funk songs. It's handy, just a pain to learn.

I didn't know anyone actually did it besides me..lol.
It's mostly a timing thing that throws you off, but once you get over that, 3 fingers just looks neat I think..I don't think it has any real relevence if you're playing funk or punk or whatever. Not even if you're playing something ridiculously hard like Primus...since they use slapping and whatnot (my favorite style to play).

Eh, Primus can get diffucult sometimes, but I've never found a problem with it, and I actually think Les is a little over-rated. Don't get me wrong, he's amazing, but when people compare him to Vic it's a little sad.
And three fingers has a little relevance if you're playing sparatic jazz pieces on a standup. The muting from that third finger reaaaaally helps you switch from the E to a D or G string.

Well, it does take a lot more rhythem than playing with just two, but with a little practice it shouldn't be too hard to learn. On an upright though...you better practice your ass off because it's hard as hell.

I went into the city on Saturday, and I saw an eight string bass. It was insane, i could even fit my hand around the neck of the thing ^_^

The only guy I know who plays an eight is Nate Kizerian, and he's not really that good with it. I don't see a point over 6, it's just show off-ish.

I use a pick because it sounds better for my style of music and play.

I really don't think...that plastic clicking sounds better than a warm hum that you get from your fingers. And really, a pick isn't better for any style.

Yes fingerstyle is better for probably most styles of music.
But for fast skate punk and the like, there's no denying that picking sounds awesome.
It's all personal preference. You probably like fingerstyle better because that's what you play.
I pick, but I use fingers during mellow parts, and I would use fingers if I was playing a different style of music.

What's insane are like 12 string basses. The necks are so ridiculously thick it doesn't even resemble a guitar.

See check out this guy: It's not right.
