Well, I dunno. It's good for a counter-melody on a slower song. I have a big tapping counter in one of my group's songs and I get goosebumps everytime. It also is a good way to find different chord progressions that you like, and can use in other styles. I respect a good tapper.

And for the bass, if it's a fender, definitely go with jazz bass. A fretless if you can afford/play in tune.

I just started reading this but I play Bass (slap) and its not boring at all . I can also see why people think Bass is a dead breed. I asked some people at my school and most said they want to play lead, Few said they wanted to play bass, and only ONE said she would like to play drums. But most people said get the fuck a way from me. Lol, I figured bass and drums are both in the dog house.

I tend to agree, but I think there are more Drummers than Bassists. I also agree that bass isn't boring, people who say it is are just speaking out of ignorance.

Yay....I'm learning the drums ^_^

I still play the bass however, but drums aswell.

On a different topic, are there any better sites than "warick.com" to teach one to how to play slap correctly?

"warWick.com". I don't know any sites to teach HOW to play. I think you should honestly figure it out yourself and find the way most comfortable to you. it'll be easier that way.

If I now play tool, flea, rush, rage against the machine, motown.. reggae.. but atleast like 200 songs fluently.. My question is: Am i on good track? what did you guys play when you were starting off with bass, 3 months or so..
I'm not taking lessons, but i maybe should.. Share with me :P

for 3 months you're on track to being a little better than average i'd say. to build up your finger coordination i'd play some rush and some zeppelin. i'd try some jamiroquai too. if you're really feeling adventurous, try some simple michael manring songs. they do exist, i promise.

Im a bass player in a band, and i've gotta say, a band isn't complete without one, look at the white stripes for instance, there music just lacks the meatyness a bass guitar brings, and to anyone who says a bassist is just a background player, fuck off, if we were a back ground player why do i take centre stage to play bass tapping solos, and take Gene Simmons for example, he isnt the greatest bassist but he's far from in the background.

Ah, a rant just brightens the day up lol

Geez....I wouldn't say that they were the WORST band ever. I haven't really listened to their basslines, but apparent he is pretty bad :P

I find it unbelievable that you have only been playing for three months and you playing Flea slap, and reggae, AND you haven't been taking lessons. Now my questions is
a) are you lying or
b) have you learnt the guitar of any other stringed instrument before?

Bass all the way, dude. I may play a lot of guitar, but I started on bass. My only excuse for not playing it as often is cause a friend of mine borrowed it for a while. But I try really hard to play them both just the same.

Nah, he could only be playing 3 months and play Flea and reggae. If he really practices a lot, it can be done. Some people have a knack for it.

Nor is Flea.

He's only put on Top 100 bassist lists because there isn't a lot of them.

FINALLY someone who doesn't think Flea is God.

But my favorite bassist would have to be Paul Turner from Jamiroquai.

I actually started out, just learning slap, and then learning flea, from the beginning, you know, freaky styley, blood sugar sex magik(not really slap, but heck), and the newer thang's. that new song, tell me baby, dude.. I gotta learn that victor wooten double slap to pull that one off in tempo.. now i'm busy with doing Marcus miller.. Power is fucking hard man.. I goootta learn that victor wooten slap xP

a) why would I lie?
b) well, i've been playing around with a guitar and a beatles-book, like, a month before i bought a bass guitar.

Ha...you don't need to double-thump to play Tell Me Baby, it's pretty simple. Power by M2...wow...I haven't played Marc in forEVER. He was one of the first bassists I played. I don't really like his style anymore though, it's too border-line.

Learn some Jaco.

My favorite is probably Ryan Martinie of Mudvayne. He's always straightforward with his basslines; but that's just my opinion. What the fuck do I know?
