i used to think they were useless until i played a few songs with an accoustic bass. they have a really pleasant sound, like a slow incubus/dave matthews vibe to it. it's easy to get ripped off, because a lot look the same, and not many people know much about them, and the sellers know that. so just read up a bit before buying one.

I would recommend going out to a music store and trying one out and seeing if you like it for yourself...

So anyway, i went to a show last night and saw Adair, Every Time I Die, From First To Last, and Story of the Year... All of the bassists used picks except for one song by Adair where it was half done with pick and the other half by finger and with then From First To Last don't have a bassist anymore...

Its not unpopular at all... There are plenty of bassists out there... It just so happens that there are more guitarists than bassists...

if you're going to play bass, do us all a favor. study music. be able to read sheet music, know a little bit of theory, take lessons if you must. just don't be another ordinary bassist, please?

Ye! Me too. I dont have any lessons, but I think I can still play with my band, but its damn true, that most of music-makers play guitar or drums. I have heard some people, who even didnt know is there a bassist or not in band...
But my opinion is: The work of bassist isnt to heard good, its to make other band heard good!

I'm a lead Guitar player...BUT! I also love playing bass. I don't own one, but I play at my friends house, and teach her (yes, shes a girl) how to play some stuff. I learnt how to play bass from using the stuff I know from my guitar and my banjo.

That's right..a banjo...*really fast banjo picking tune*

Yeah. Bass an' guitar are very close,so they can be like brothers,ya know, what I mean?
Anyway. My bands guitaris also give sometimes some guitarplaying hints,so I can try 'em...

..no. not true at all. my band has about 3 songs where there's no guitar at all. it's just drums and a bass. 2 of them are slapped, and one is tap/slap combo. i also have a solo project where it's all bass. it sounds really good i think. i just mix percussive left hand slap with right hand chicken pluck/double thump to make it sound like i have a small amount of drums in it. it works well. really, all i'm saying is if you listen to the right people, bass is as musical as any other instrument

I'm gunna agree with fallen on this one, bass can be as musical as the rest of the instruments.

Yeah i'm gonna agree with him too...

But hey, of course we would agree, i mean thats why we play the instrument :P

I love the deep hum of a bass, or the awesome slap sound it can give when played.

I love bass

Hey my friend told me that i should take up guitar so i would get better at bass, i dont really know why he said this, but he said it would "make me better".

I disagareed with him, and said that bass is a different playing style to a lead. I'm learning how to slap and play Ska music. If i learnt guitar, it sorta wouldn't help me at all with slap and Ska so yeah. What so you guys think about learning guitar to learn bass, I disagree, but gimme your thoughts anyways

Only reason I can think of to play guitar is to help with playing chords on a bass, increasing you finger speed, or dexterity of the fingers. But you could do that with playing a bass with a pick, or do the smart thing and learn chicken pluck, because then you have a pick technique with your thumb, and you're getting quicker. I've never played guitar dedicatedly, only picking up an accoustic time to time.

People think Bass guitar is a background instrument or a back up instrument. People who say this are the most ignorant fucks ever. Bassist give the song melody and generally play exactly what the lead guitar plays, just not chorded. If not, bassists play stuff which has the most pain in the ass timing that comes in on half beats.

You people should judge bass players on Mark hoppus - Blink 182. He plays the most easy crap ever.

Ya Ya i agree, although i myself am a guitarist i still agree, In my band we let the bassist in on basically everything, He has his own solos and everything, he's fucking sweet, without him i dont even know were we'd be, sure i'm only 14 but still i think he's fucking sweet. Anyways i completly agree and think that the world needs more Bassists.

Guitar has greatly improved my bass skills when it comes to playing with a pick... Its also helped with the speed of my fingers (like changing from note to note not string to string)...

Dont judge people on how difficult theyre riffs are
Judge them on how good they play them...

I guess im an ignorant fuck....i think bass is a background instrument though...i think bass is a very important instrument....u cant have band without a bass-player...thats my opinion...

Bass doesnt play what the lead guitar plays...then u must be playing "Lead Bass" or something...

I judge bassists on 4 main principles
1. (most importantly) originality. does the bassist have a unique tone? a unique rhythemic style which he plays? or does he just play eighths with the bass drum
2. flow - does the music make sense? does it keep time? does it melodically meld with the drums and the voice and guitar? does the bass play the note for a full value or is it choppy?
3. technique - does the bassist use all 4 fingers, or just index and ring fingers? does he play all power chords or the full arpeggio and scale? does he have dexterity in the fingers or does he keep moving his hand to reach?
4. (this is underrated) stage presence - does the bassist make you want to jump and dance to the beat, or is he the type who stands with his feet together and looks at his fretboard the whole time? does he convince you that he knows what he's doing and knows how to do it damn well.

this is how i rate my bassists.

hey i haven't really read much of this forum, but I'm in a band and just this weekend we were recording and ben (the bassist) stopped playing to adjust the mic and...pretty much the whole song stopped. without the bass, there really isn't much of a flow to a song. drums, guitar, and vocals are high sounding, and a deep bass is essential to keep the song alive.

Keep with the music.

Thats the point i was trying to make earlier...

Woohoo... I'm getting both of my basses restrung tomorrow... I can't wait to play them...
