How do I shrink an imported movie

Hi, I'm a flash mx 2004 (n00b) user and I have this problem. I thought importing a avi video file into flash would make it smaller in filesize. I had like a 6.7 meg avi. I was making it on movie amker and wanted to convert it to a flash. I "imported to stage" and saved it after adding a play button, and the final flash was 8 meg. I tried again, this time importing it partially cropped and half the size (from like 640x480 to 320x240) and the final was 9 megabytes! I really want to upload my first flash here (Its not great, but I want to show it to my friends online and my friends who have seen it say its good enough not to get blammed).
Does anyone know how I can make my raw video file smaller, or make my final swf smaller? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

A video is not a flash.

it should compress it alot

What I'm trying to do is import the avi into my flash project, (I used import to stage) then I added a play button and credits, then I saved and published it.
The original avi was 6 meg. I imported it into a flash project, saved, published, and the final swf was 9 meg. It didnt compress at all and only got bigger.
How would I export the avi as an swf? What other compression techniques are there? I have to make my original avi 1 or 2 meg less as a swf with a play button and credits...

lower the quality of the avi
if it's an actual movie movie, then host it on putfile.com
