How exactly is the insult "noob" (or its variations) supposed to actually INSULT anyone? In my opinion, telling someone "You're new to this." is probably the least insulting thing imaginable. Let me make a small list of names that I find to be much more insulting.

1. Jackass
2. Douchebag
3. Assclown
4. Fucker
5. Cowgirl

When someone says "stfu noob" to me while playing CS:S, I can't even describe how un-insulted I feel. I'm regularly at the top of my team, and when someone calls me "new", it just doesn't stick.

Well, when you refer to someone as a noob, you are blatently saying they are hardly worth acknolegement, describing them as a completely clueless fuck up. because it has a distinctly new ring to it, it apears to work better than more traditional insults, although its clear that only real geeks will take it to heart when you are "pwning a noob"

It started out as "Newbie" and wasn't even meant to be insulting. Then it was shortened to "Newb"... then along came "Noob", then "Nub"... Pretty soon this knuckle-dragging primate intellects will talk about the "nbz" they "pwt".

I agree. It's usually who the player is that will be affected by such words. Some may not even respond because they're the "silent" type players. Some may even go into a spasm of swearing and insults. It all comes down to who the player is.

No, calling someone a cum-guzzling, father-sucking, piece of rat shit, infected douche, son of a mangy bitch is the worst on the net.

noob is just stupid.

To me, the way you just defined noob would be a far more effective insult than just calling someone a noob. Noob means so many things to so many people that it has no power as an insult anymore and thats besides the fact that it was a weak insult to begin with. There is something to be said for putting a little effort into your flames.

It's supposed to be 'newb'.
A 'noob' is someone that acts like a moron.
Often does stupid things, multiple times.
Spammers, CAPS LOCK TYPERS, Beggers, etc can also be referred as 'noobs'.
A newb is just someone who is new to the game, and unskilled, but doesn't have to be a 'noob'.
People calling someone a noob because they keep getting killed, are a noob themselves :)

For instance, you're playing an RPG. (WoW, Runescape, whatever) And you got like lvl 70/80 characters and you're starting a new one. You meet someone and immedietely they start calling you a 'noob'. Means they don't know what a noob is, making a noob out of themselves.

I dunno, who says it has to be insulting? Calling someone a n00b when they kill you and 4 other of your team members in a snap is just plain funny because everyone knows that takes skill. I think the term you're thinking of is "newb" which is derived from new.

Haha. Assclown. I think, to most hardcore Internet users, being called a noob IS majorly insulting. escpially when you are not, and are probably being looked down uopn by the few people higher up then you. Sure, some people will always say "WELL YOU WERE ONE TOO!" but who really listens to that?

i thought the meaning of "n00b" was unoficially changed there about two years ago...

it started as an acronym for "newb" ( acronym... is that the right word ? ) anyway, it started as that, but individualised itself, because...

if you were seen to be doing something stupid, or annoying online, most people clocked it up to you being a "newbie", ( for example, doing something wrong in Command and Conquer or starcraft or warcraft or some online game that meant your losing the match, OR talking bollox and asking simple questions ) however repeated acts of moronity despite you not being new, garnered the name "noob"

so...

noob / n00b = general moron, annoying bastard, etc etc

newb / newbie = someone who is new to something, and can thus be pardoned for stupidity, because its really just inexperience

... dosn't really matter to me, because i hate the word n00b, i prefer to just call someone a bollix...

as a wise man once said - "i don't know whats i be doin'... "

Calling a person a noob/newb/what-have-you is the lamest insult.

Today it just gets used incorrectly. It never used to be an insult, more of just pointing out something. Now kiddies think it's the greatest thing next to calling a person a douche.

Noob, when used correctly, shouldn't be an insult as the person has already made an ass of themselves. For example:

<regular> Hey Guest101119, type /quit. It opens new commands in mirc.
* Guest101119 has left the channel.
* Guest101119 has rejoined the channel.
<Guest101119> That was mean :(
<regular> Hahahaha. You're such a noob ;)

People who think they're insulting others by calling them a noob need to go buy an insult book or something.
