No internet sucks. 2005-09-29 12:00:55 Reply

So, I just moved to a new house that's about 100 feet north of the northern-most tip of the DC beltway.

We haven't gotten our NEW FIBER-OPTIC VERISON INTERNET CONNECTION yet...but, it's roughly 15.0 Megabits/sec so I can...hey, what did I just say???

FIFTEEN MEGABITS A SECOND DOWNLOAD? Holy shit!!!!!!!! Yes. That's right. So, waiting until October 3rd to get the internet all setup doesn't seem that bad.

So, for now;

Hello from my mom's and dad's house / work / public library / and various friend's houses.

=)

Usually, when something is measured in bit, it's to trick you into thinking that's big.

DS game cards are 1 gigabit. It was later when I found out that it was 128 megabytes.

I think mine is only 2.2 mbps, but we did get it upgraded from about 600kbps, so the improvment is noticeable. Enjoy your fast connection dude.

Sup Tom :)

Well, there will be 4 other guys using the connection, so not like it's all mine. But, it should be PLENTY to spread around.

We were thinking of getting a wireless router, but then I'd be paranoid of incognito driving up to my house and haX0ring my intraweb.

Now find somewhere that you can download things from that doesn't cap your download rates.

If you're still interested, get a Linksys wireless router and I'll tell you how to make it so that not only will your network not be visible unless someone has all of it's specifics saved on their computer, but it'll also be MAC address restricted so that only the wireless networking cards you specify can access it. And then you can add a third level or protection by tossing on a password.

Essentially, if someone can somehow figure out one of the four addresses out of the trillions of possible MAC addresses that is allowed to connect to your network, they also have to know what channel you're on out of about a dozen, which encryption you're using for your WEP key out of two, and the exact name of your network out of the trillions of possible things you can name it with character limits factored in.

Hackable only in theory.

Or you can just MAC address restrict it and password it. Or just password it, or just MAC address restrict it. As long as it's not just a plain ol' open network, few people would be gettin' on that bitch.

Anyway, good luck with the move, and good luck with dealing with public and other people's computers.

Evark, that sounds like an excellent idea. Hopefully, once the connection comes in, we can figure out how everything will be set up. That shit sounds unhackable, so I'll mention it to the roomies and hopefully, I'll be able to go wireless (which will be sweet once I get a laptop).

Anyway, 4 more days =)

Why "ugh"? I woulden't mind having that fast of a connection. My fucking capped connection here at this school is depriving me of being able to download anything. (2.5 gig/week cap, and it has these huge spikes in ping where everybody in the building goes offline for 10 seconds, and it's nowhere near as fast as cable or dsl.)

Linksys wireless routers are fun too, I remember when my brother connected to ours I started playing around with it, disabling his connection every 10 minutes. He had no idea what was going on :p
