4.07 / 5.00 10,082 ViewsI was wondering, I am wanting to host games... I live on a college campus and I can play mmorpgs... For instance, I play guild wars no problem. Doesn't it have to send and receive data? Since I am on a college wide T3 network, if I wanted to host a game could i just host it on the same port that Guild Wars uses? I cant change or open ports here on the schools firewall because they do it themselves and whatnot... So is there any way around all this BS.
Its somtimes tricky to find out exactly what ports programs use. if you have a software firewall (and you should) try opening ALL ports when you want to host. Its a LOT eaisier telling a software firewall what to allow/block than a hardware one.
u didnt get what i said, its not a software firewall but a hardware one ran by the server here at school or whatever...

If your ITS policy at your school is anything like that at UConn and they see you using a lot of bandwidth, they'll slow your connection down or shut your internet off completely, so read the college/university's terms of usage policy first.
PAY ATTENTION
Here is the problem...
I am wanting to host a game, not for people on my network, but for ANYONE IN THE WORLD TO JOIN! This game uses ports 7234... But the firewall here at school blocks ports 7234, is there anyway around this.
nevermind.. you dont have a clue about networking and hardware firewalls.

Good guess.
If the firewall is proper, there shouldn't be a way to open the port unless you have direct access to the machine itsself, or some sort of remote control panel (which, unless you go to some Tech college, you shouldn't be able to)
The guy from uconn is right, and you are the moron here. If you host a game, it uses an immense amount of bandwidth, becuase everybody is pinging through your network to your computer, and your college may shut off your internet access or remove your privelages for this.
Sure there are a way to do it, but if we exclude bribing the admin it's prety pointless for hosting stuff since you would need a relay that likewise could do the hosting.
Try bribing the admin. If that fails, get a dialup.
Each time someone abuses hittest, God kills a kitten. Please, learn real collision testing.
sorry... but i am not the moron here, each building holds about 15 people, and each building has its own individual T3 connection. So, I talked to the admin, and in turn its probably going to happen... Considering you didnt know what kind of connection, how many people lived in each building etc. etc. Then why would you just call someone a moron... you moron.
Moron = A college student without any grammatical skills.
Besides all of the bashing of each other's grey matter, the only way that you can host a game is to have them unblock the port. Either that, or you can configure Guild Wars to use another port, but I'm not sure if that's an option in an MMORPG. It seems unfeasible in my eyes that that possibility would be there.
Man oh man.. I apologize.. I guess I am going to have to be gramatically correct from here on out on every message board and video game in the world because this guy said so. NO MORE INTERNET LINGO FELLAS!!! BECAUSE THIS GUY WILL CALL YOU STUPID IF YOU USE IT.
