I just updated Dad 'n Me with a new version that has been compiled in Flash 8. From what I can tell, it should run faster for everyone!

You will need to have at least the Flash6 plugin installed for the game to work. Flash8 comes with an export option that optimizes the file for Flash6 and above. I tried exporting the game as Flash8 only, but that produced some interesting bugs in the gameplay that I'll need to research.

The new version does not support vector caching. It turns out that vector caching must be applied to individual art items and can't be applied to the game as a whole. For optimal performance, it is recommended to only use vector caching on large, static art objects such as backgrounds. Considering I manually converted most of the background art to GIFs already, vector caching wouldn't be able to help much.

So far this is probably the tip of the iceburg. I ran a test where I had like 20 enemies on the screen and it ran pretty well, so that's exciting. I need to start experimenting with some of the Flash8 effects and figure out why the code broke when compiled for Flash8. The next generation of web games is coming!

Please play Dad 'n Me and let me know if it is running better on your computer compared to before. You may need to clear your cache if you have played recently.

As a side note... I just now played it in my browser and it doesn't seem any faster than before. It could even be slower... Since I had ran the previous version through a third party optimizer. Disappointing. :(

What program was that? I won't be getting Flash 8 for a bit, so I could use an optimizer for some of my submissions.

Yeah, my impression so far is that Flash 8 doesn't seem any faster once you run it in a browser. I'll reserve judgment until I see more examples of Flash 8 in action, but I was really expecting it to instantly super-speed my existing stuff if I recompiled it. Boo. :(

flash 8 was lying to us when they said it went faster.

can we please petition macromedia as a gigantic community and ask for a little rightclick > use hardware > use graphics card % slider ?

right now flash uses pure processor power. if it would just use a little bit of resource by user command, it could run AMAZINGLY fast. but no, they have webcam crap none of us ever use in there instead.

I couldn't agree more, my API games are severely restricted for that fact. Particularly when messing with 3D.

It seems to run slower for me. Tom maybe you should optimize it for flash 8 and ignore the error messages, sometimes those don't do anything at all just minor syntax changes. IDK.

I tried a Flash 8 export (still playable despite some bugs) and it still didn't seem any faster.
