I've never seen anything more hilarious. The first ever election in 22 years, and people have just realized it. Every now and then, the goverment would put up several signs on the streets saying what accomplishments the president has made, and how good he is.
A few months ago, a man put himself up as a candidate for the elections, and the goverment locked him in prison. After lots of protests and angry letters, the goverment released him from prison, and granted them the first ever election.
And of course, there is always cheating on the election...so I'm not sure who would win out of the 10 candidates.
They say the goverment even watches what I say on the internet.

The head of an independent judicial committee monitoring the vote said that so far complaints were limited.
But there have been reports of some problems, such as people being allowed to vote without voting cards and not being marked with indelible ink, or receiving money and goods in return for their votes.
Government supporters crashed the Kifaya rally in Cairo
Rights groups have also complained of intimidation of voters and monitors by officials and supporters of Mr Mubarak's ruling National Democratic Party.
Leading challenger Ayman Nour said abuses undermined the credibility of the vote.
"There are no fair elections taking place," he told a news conference. "We accept only the results of free and fair elections."
A court said on Tuesday that organisers could stop independent groups from monitoring voting at polling stations.
The ruling by Egypt's Supreme Administrative Court overturned last week's decision by a lower court.
International monitors are not being allowed to observe the elections either.

LOLOL. Who woulda figured? A sham election by a sham democracy. Big suprise. And, the votes are in. Suprise suprise, Mubarak won with 80% of the vote. Almost as good as Saddam, but his people dont love him quite as much, I guess.
Mubarak took 78 percent to 80 percent of Wednesday's polling and opposition candidate Ayman Nour took 12 percent — a respectable showing for a relative unknown and one that could propel him to greater political prominence.

My Intro to Middle East History teacher thought this election was funny as hell. He lived in Egypt for a couple of years and I think he finds this election pretty repulsive.

Mubarak will rule Egypt until the day Joan Rivers is found in some obscure hellhole and filed as a mumified corpse from thousands of years ago.
OH WAIT
Seriously though, maybe after this sham election somebody, somewhere, will give enough of a shit to reprimend Mubarak's regime, call the UN attention about it and see if there's any chance of at least some half-assed democratic reforms.
And if that happens we should certainly buy a lot of geese so they could shoot up gold eggs out of their asses, because we would be living in a fantasy world where dictators and the like actually give a shit about the UN.

So, is it real democracy, or just a cover for the fact that the current president would be elected an other time? Because I heard that he wants his son to get his place after he dies...

There have always been elections in Egypt! One could choose between Mubarak and Mubarak. I went to Egypt on vacation some time ago and our guide told us this smiling. I think most Egyptians just don't give a shit about who's ruling over them.

Mubarak has the blessing of the US, just like Karimov and Musharraf. Dictators like these don't have to care about hippie stuff like human rights and democracy. The UN can only take action against America's enemies like Cuba and Iraq (in the Saddam days).

u cant have an election and then the corrupted government picks the same corrup dictator as before...it defeats the purpose...i feel in that situation an election would be a waste of time and money.

eygpt started to go to hell the day sadat came to power, it was considered to be very powerful before, but anyway all this election was is a litle act to ease international pressure on the goverment, about nobody showed up to vote, and the goverment cheated and added more ballds to favour itself and to put more votes to make it legitamate, lol, there's a cheese in jordan called la bashkarie, it has a picture of a red cow that looks exactly like mubarak, always thought that was funny

If it was a legitimate election, do you think it anything would have been different? Im not so sure. Maybe the minority candidate would have had more votes but I still think Mubarak would have had at the very least 60%.
I really dont think those people care about who runs their country. It is kinda sad, but hey, it is a different culture. Who am I to say how they should act?

I'll venture a guess as to why....
We give them 2 billion dollars in aid every year. More than any other country. With that amount of surplus cash to a third world country you can do wonders.

"Egypt" was better off with Sadat, he accomplished peace with the Israelis, and actually did some heavy work. Mubarak didn't do anything political, just built some bridges and hospitals here and there.

Now now, just because everyone who knows anything about Middle-Eastern "Democracies" knows that "elections" are complete farces. Don't get me wrong I would love to see Democracy flourish in the region, but it is not going to happen anytime soon.
I am hopeful for the Kafai (pronouced KA-fi) movement, and similar movements in the region. Litterally translated Kafai means enough. Once the citizens in these countries stand up and realise that there are other forms of goverment I feel that dictitorial goverments will topple.

Actually "Eygpt" was better off with Jamal abd al nasser, sadat destroyed the eygptian, and arabian milatary by giving up producing weopens from gulf sponsers and buying old worthless scrap from america, he turned eygpt from a pruducer to a heavy consumer and destoyed it's economy, and the peace with the isrealie's is considered betrayal on his half seeing how eygpt won the 73 war, and could have gotten palestine back if not from american interfirance, they still where stronger than isreal back then, and could have been if it was not for him
