You submit music, and if it's good enough, people download it, kind of like how someone goes into a shop to buy a record or CD, the downloads you accumulate can be represented through the diamond and gold tracks.
I forget the exact numbers for each track, so someone can help you there.

i've heard of programs that do that for you... not that i'd suggest using them. I've been on the AP for almost 10 months, and i got my first gold a few days ago. Heres my personal meathod of getting your audio noticed:
1: Produce lots of tracks
2: Produce several high quality video game loops from commonly animated games, like mario, zelda, sonic
3: If the audio gets used in a good flash, more people start using it
4: if more people start using it, more people see a link to your audio
5: if more people see a link to your audio, the more people review/download your music.

Post a lot in the forums. Don't advertise your tracks, but if you act maturely, spell correctly, help anyone who needs it and limit the flaming, people check out your stuff. Put a link in your sig and post.

Not if you advertise in the audio joint or the audio advertisement thread. you can advertise in your sig as much as you want, and in other peoples posts, and as long as its in context, they shouldnt mind. For example, if sombody is looking for a track of music, reccomend yourself :D

It's convienent for composers like myself, but it all has to do with your style.
I've been going around and have been getting a lot of composition deals. It's not successful, but its enlightening.

Lol....thats true. Aside from that, they specifically say you can put ANYTHING you want up there. Sometimes I check it out, but does it actually make me want to go check out what they're advertising? Not really. But still......KEEP TRYING!!!! You'll get there.
