Questions about tolerance 2005-09-06 14:03:55 Reply

1. Do I have to tolerate lifestyles, attitudes or opinions that I find immoral, arrogant, offensive or just plain hostile, but that are something people are technically entitled to?

2. If I "tolerate" something, what exactly does that include? Can I still disapprove of what I'm "tolarating"? Can I even hate it?

3. Can intolerance be tolerated? Should it be?

(Don't be a smart-ass and turn the last question into some stupid mind games, e. g "if u dont toelaret intolarens then ur intolerint and shudn toelrte urslef!!11!")

The general rule of thumb that I find helpful is this:
I can do anything I want so long as it does not infringe upon your right to do what you want.

Tolerate anything that another does, so long as it makes no negative repercussions for others. This can be skewed with a statement such as "You can't eat your cake because it infringes upon my right to eat your cake", but you get the idea.

You can have whatever opinion you like about what you tolerate. Tolerance is exactly that- the toleration of something. It does not mean support, simply a lack of antagonism against it. Your opinions have as much right to be tolerated as anyone else's.

Depends. If the group in question is known for activities that may risk the lives and well being of others, then you have a right to be intolerant of them; e.g. neo-nazis, environmental extrmeists, etc.

But if they simply mind to themselves and do not impact your well being directly or indirectly, no matter how much you may disagree with them, you have to tolerate them.

Tolerance is does not mean to be perfectly okay with something, it just means you just let whatever you're tolerant at peace. An example could be someone of a different political outlook as you; you have the right to disagree with that person, and even hate their political views, but you cannot hate the person because of them, because that's only one aspect of their characther.

3. Can intolerance be tolerated? Should it be?

Depends. There will always be intolerance, so we have to accept it. However, intolerance that leads to violence has to be stopped, regardless of where it is coming from.

When people bring up tolerance its usually very hypocritical. The same spokesman for tolerating race can turn around speak out against kids wearing baggy pants or tatooed and peirced youth. And then there's the whole deal with "tolerating intolerance".

Basically its a matter that is complicated for no reason. I think we just need to not analyze what tolerance means so much. Let's just be good people. (in case you can't tell, I reside in happy smiley land)

What if it's something that does in my opinion harm others, but is generally considered acceptable?

Also, how should I deal with things that cannot be tolerated?
