WASHINGTON (AP) -- Chief Justice William H. Rehnquist died Saturday evening at his home in suburban Virginia, said Supreme Court spokeswoman Kathy Arberg.
A statement from the spokeswoman said he was surrounded by his three children when he died in Arlington.
"The Chief Justice battled thyroid cancer since being diagnosed last October and continued to perform his dues on the court until a precipitous decline in his health the last couple of days," she said.
Rehnquist was appointed to the Supreme Court as an associate justice in 1971 by President Nixon and took his seat on Jan. 7, 1972. He was elevated to chief justice by President Reagan in 1986.
His death ends a remarkable 33-year Supreme Court career during which Rehnquist oversaw the court's conservative shift, presided over an impeachment trial and helped decide a presidential election.

TWO Justices appointed by Bush? Shit, even after he's gone, Bush will still have his strangle hold on America.

Um, didn't Clinton appoint 2 justices to the supreme court, as well? Does he "still have his strangle hold on America"?

Our growing dependence on laws only shows how uncivilized we are.

Maybe this is the Irish Creme and Guiness Stout in me. But this will be my last post for the night. I know I feel stupid and drunk now.
I cried like 5 minutes ago when I turned on the TV.
I feel that perhaps I will never be married in my life time.
In one way, I saw that Rehnquist as a the ultimate blocker of Bush's attempt to strangle and over ride the checks and balance system.
But now everything is going to be different.
Everything is going for the worst in the United States.
Fuck off

I would like to take this moment to extend a heartfelt wish to the thousands and thousands of people around the world who lost someone to death today.
But if I could mention one person, it would be Joseph Rotblat. The only scientist to resign from the Manhatten Project and a nobel peace prize winner.
Injured Workers rights were taken away in the 1920's by an insurance company (WCB), it's high time we got them back.

Apparently he'll be succeeded by Roberts, giving the democrats a fresh start along with plenty of time to fight whoever's going to replace O'Conner.

I wouldnt say that really, since (before we lost the two most recent justices in the last few months) this is how appointments look.
Clinton -2
Bush Sr - 2
Regan - 3
Ford - 1
Nixon - 1
Correct me if I am wrong but aren't all of those Republican Presidents except for Clinton? Besides, if you ar epicking in Justices in hopes of overturning things like Roe vs Wade you aren't doing what you are suppose to do. You are suppose to nominate people who will uphold the integrity of the court, not uphold your political beliefs, in the past many justices have been selected on merit and were actually even in some cases from the other political side.

I think you misunderstand, this isn't important because hes American, it's important because his replacement could mean a huge shift in power.

Actually Jimmy is correct. Him leaving the bench combined with a new justice means that the SC power could shift and land mark decisions like Roe vs Wade and many other highly controversial subjects liek religion in school could be changed and have enouroums consequences both in the US and in the international world (any court case going before the SC involving things like trade or legality of fingerprinting every visitor to the US).

Always the best time to post on the NG BBS (experienced).
I feel that perhaps I will never be married in my life time.
Damn, I feel for ya Fli. Move to Canada? Yeah, I bet that's not feasible.
But now everything is going to be different.

Yeah, this could actually be the moment when the United States digs it's heels in and finally goes from having red states to becoming a red country.
But uh... maybe Bush will be fair and impartial, believe in the true core of the Democratic system, and elect a liberal Judge to replace him?
....
Fuck off
=( On second thought, I think that about sums it up.

It is going to be an interesting drawn out battle to see who replaces him and who becomes the next chief justice.

Apparantly, the new Supreme Judge candidate John Roberts will take the place of William H. Rehnquist becoming the 17th US cheif justice. Rehnquist died recently, if you weren't aware, due to thyroid cancer. President George Bush Jr. nominated Justice Roberts for the newly opened position in the Supreme Court. According to the KREM 2 news, many were worried about Justice Roberts being nominated due to his opposition to women's rights. (For more on this head over to: WashingtonPost.com )
Justice Roberts was supposed to take the place of the soon-to-retire Assistant Justice Sandra Day O'Connor, who is the first woman to hold a position on the Supreme Court bench.
