New Hampshire Doctor Outraged By Complaint
ROCHESTER, N.H. -- The New Hampshire attorney general is investigating a Rochester doctor because a patient complained that he bluntly told her she needed to lose weight.
Dr. Terry Bennett said that he's outraged by what he calls a baseless complaint. A patient was apparently insulted when Bennett told her that she was obese and could only get healthier by losing weight.
"It's an epidemic in the United States, and it's croaking us," Bennett said.
Bennett said that it's a lecture he gives to many of his overweight patients.
"It's your weight, ... and there's dozens of programs," Bennett said. "You don't have to come in here. You can join Jenny Craig. You can go see Weight Watchers."
Bennett said he tells obese patients that their weight is bad for their health and their love lives. But the lecture drove one patient to write a letter to the Board of Medicine, which has passed on the complaint to the Attorney General's Office.
"Did I sleep with somebody? Did I give somebody drugs? Was I careless? No. End of story," Bennett said. "That should have been the end of it."
Now, other overweight patients are coming to Bennett's defense.
"What really makes me angry is he told the truth," patient Mindy Haney said. "How can you punish somebody for that?"
Haney said that Bennett has helped her lose more than 150 pounds, but, at first, she didn't want to listen.
"I have been in this lady's shoes. I've been angry and left his practice. I mean, in-my-car-taking-off angry," Haney said. "But once you think about it, you're angry at yourself, not Dr. Bennett. He's the messenger. He's telling you what you already know."
Haney is so upset at the complaint that she has started a petition demanding that the attorney general be fired. So far, she's gathered 100 signatures.
Bennett said that the Attorney General's Office tried to get him to settle the matter by agreeing to attend a medical education course, which he refused.
"I'm sorry," Bennett said. "If she's watching, I'm devoutly sorry to have offended you. I didn't mean to offend you. I meant to tell you the truth. And that's what I tried to do."
The Board of Medicine would not comment on the case, but Vice President Kevin Costin said, "Physicians have to be professional with patients and remember everyone is an individual. You should not be inflammatory or degrading to anyone."
Bennett said that he thinks his apology should be enough.
I think the women lives in a fantasy world.

Trying to get a doctor fired for telling you medical advice about your obesity? Because you were offended?
Therer is something so sickeningly wrong with that I can't put it into words...

Like that other woman was quoted as saying. She wasn't angry at Dr. Bennet, she was angry at the fact that she knew it was the truth and she didn't want to hear it. There's no way in hell she's going to win. The man is a doctor and she came to him for a diagnosis and he gave it to her. It's like getting mad about the doctor telling you that you have a cold, all he's doing is telling her what the problem is.
Think you're pretty clever...

Awww that fat lady got offended, how sad. She needs to grow the fuck up. You can't get anyone fired because you felt offended on a minor level such as that. Fatty just needs to take the twinkies out of her mouth and start running.

Yeah, the whole fat pride thing is a lot like stabbing-myself-with-an-infected-steak-kni
fe pride. Sure I can try to start a movement to be proud about it, but that doesn't magically change the rules and make it something perfectly healthy to do.

Yes, but then I don't get the images of an obese woman suing her personal dietician for calling her fat as well....
But a plastic surgeon getting sued's just as good...

What a fucking bitch, starting all that trouble like that. I hope she gets fatter and more obese so men will say "hey, look at that unusually overweight individual sitting at Jacks Joke Shop. Go down I-95 for 5 miles and turn right at Hammershire Road to get there. Remember, if it ain't funny, it ain't worth Jack."

Stupid fat people. When will they learn that being obese IS NOT OKAY? Obesity is neck-and-neck with smoking as the #1 cause of preventable death, and these people want to be proud of it? I don't watch TV much, but you can rest assured that when I do I see at least 5 or 6 antismoking ads a day. I can't remember the last time I saw an antiobesity ad on television.
I found several sites and medical journals showing that from 1990 to 2000, nearly 400,000 people have died as a result of obesity, a 33% jump (http://www.thedoctor..icles/obesity_death
/). I can't understand people ignoring numbers like that, even worse pretending that obesity ain't that bad.
Is premature death, heart disease and stroke, hyperlipidemia, Sleep apnea, osteoarthritis, dall stone lever disease and gout, cancer, reproductive problems in women, and diabetes not a good enough reason to put the fork down?
To truly know death you must fuck life in the gall bladder.

that woman needs to grow up and stop sucking her mommy's thumb, that is one of the dumbest things i've heard, all this is a stupid excuse to make some money off an honest doctor, the sad thing is with the law as it is today she might win if nobody settles, i've heard about a court case where the suspected murderer's allibi was "i went back into get my gun" he got off without any charges.

Yeah I gotta admait, the complaint the woman is making has to be one of the most frivilous and petty things I've ever heard of. I mean, he's a doctor, it's his friggin job to tell you what's wrong with your health!
However I'm not so sure about the doctor going after the attorney general, I mean, he's just doing his job too in making sure there's no foul play here.
I could see there being a case against the doctor if in telling her that she was obese he said something like: "You're the fattest cow I've ever seen! Lose some weight ya blimp, you're so fat I think you might make my floor collapse! I don't know how you even got that fat ass through my door". However from the article it dosen't look like this is the case. I don't think he should be going after the attorneyy general for just doing his job, but yeah fat lady = stupid.

The worst part was tht he apologized, which gives the bitch the impression that she's right. He's a doctor. He's not trying to make fun of you, he's trying to make you healthier. Oh well, just one more thing you can sue for. If a taecher told you that you were too fat and needed to lose weight, you'd have a case. If you had your boss tell you to lose weight, you'd have a case. But when a doctor tells you to lose weight, do it for god's sake.

All the complaints in the world aren't going to take fat cells off of any of this woman's many rolls of fat.
He's her doctor, for crying out loud--he's trying to advance her health--and her health isn't going to improve by getting fatter.
Are we that politically correct now that we can't tell people sound medical advice because it might OFFEND them?
The truth hurts.
So often times it happens, that we live our lives in chains, and we never even know we had the key...
