Finally here they are: Sir-Nuts replies from two weeks ago, part 1

Great, but the problem is that I'll need to do some manual work consisting of "colon-space adding, copy-pasting quotes, more colon-space adding." :P

I really think the Wi/Ht could use a longer character limit per post. Like... 10,000 characters?

I got that same problem every now and again. Bigger character limits for posts would be nice for our forum, but I don't see that happening. Would be nice if NG didn't cut the posts automatically though.

At 3/16/10 05:09 PM, Sir-Nuts wrote: But yeah, once a year or so we see riots where the prisoners take over the place and start demanding things, such as the liberation of certain prisoners (like "bosses" of drug dealing). They either give up or the police represses them, and their penalty is extended.
Heh, yeah it's not like they can go anywhere I guess. If they leave they'll get shot so... For the police it's just a matter of waiting until they give up.
Indeed, they could just wait until the riot cools down, but they often hold whoever works in the prisons as hostages. Those are the tension moments, because they can't just shoot them out of nowhere, and there's the necessity of negotiating with the prisoners, which isn't a easy job. :/

Yeah I guess you can't put those lives at risk. I guess it's indeed hard to negotiate with prisoners as they have probably taken lives before and don't have much to lose if they decide to kill an employee.

Well Spain and Portugal are neighbors so... :p Still doesn't explain why you guys speak some Greek though. Is it Basques (or whatever that language is called) what you guys speak by the way?
Actually, since I wrote this, my Portuguese / Literature teacher began to teach us the history of the Portuguese language. Here's why we have some Greek therms in our language:

When the Roman empire (Latin-speakers) conquered Greeks, they didn't "erase" their culture, which was really vast and fascinating. Instead, they incorporated is to their culture, including art, lifestyle and their language!

Thus, pretty much any country that has a Latin-derivative language is likely to have Greek therms in their language as well. CONGRATS, YOU GOT AN A IN PORTUGUESE HISTORY. :)

I see. Makes sense I guess. I know the Romans pretty much stole the entire Greek religion and the architecture, but I didn't know they also stole their culture, lifestyle and language too.

Oh, and I think Basques is spoken in the North of Spain, as a secondary language, I think. Two of my friends lived in there for a few months, and they recently came back. :)

Yep Basques is spoken there, but I was wondering if you guys might speak that language as well.

Nah, not really. The two major countries would be Brazil and Portugal, with some countries in Africa, but none in South America. There are fewer than 300,000,000 lusophonics, I'm sure.

Brazil is nearing 200 million right now.
I thought you guys would have way more inhabitants than that, considering the size of your country.
That's a good guess, but you'd have to consider that we have large forests (the rain forest is OURS, not world-patrimony!), and we still have large farms and stuff.

Oh yeah the rain forests. Although I thought a large part of that would be gone by now and taken over by farmers and villagers.

Or are you guys like Australia and China, where the majority of the people lives along the coast? I bet there aren't many people living in the rain forests at least...
That's true, but hey, I live in the middle of nowhere (check the map :P) and there's about 3mi people living around here. More history lessons ahead:

Back in the 1700 / 1800s, there were plenty of expeditions to the West of Brazil, to gain more territory and, mainly, find gold. This "Western march" created some major cities in the middle of Brazil. Although where I live was a plan during the 50s to move the capital to the middle of Brazil. :)

I see. But I guess it was difficult getting through the rain forest and thus the majority of the Brazilians live near the coast or somewhere in the middle (and not in the Eastern regions)?

And our neighbours speak mostly Spanish, with the exception of French (French Guiana), English (Guyana) and Dutch (Suriname). See, you can live in South America if you want to. :)
Haha yes I could go live in Suriname if I want to. I know many people in Holland wouldn't mind living there, due to the much better weather they have. Plus the Suriname people always seem way more relaxed and happy than we are.
Wait, what's the difference between calling Holland and Netherlands?

There is no difference. It's both the correct name for our country, although the Netherlands might be 'more correct'. Because I think Holland is more old-fashioned and probably refers to the two most important provinces in our country. All the major cities, harbors etc. are located in North- and South-Holland and especially a couple of centuries ago those were the only provinces where anything interesting happened :p

I'm not 100% sure about that though, but they are both correct names.

When I go to France on a holiday, it's still difficult though. Most French people just don't want to speak or learn English. Mainly the older generation doesn't understand a word you say. The younger generations do learn English now, but they don't seem to like you much if you start talking to them in English =/
Yeah, I'm starting to learn why this happens now. Basically, they used to fight.

A lot. :P

Yep they did and I believe France didn't like the fact that they and their language became less and less important in Europe over the past few centuries :p

I have been taught a little bit of French myself fortunately , but just enough to be able to order a sandwich or ask which way I have to go :p
My dad used to have French classes, but he has forgot most of it, due to lack of usage. And he has forgot part of his English as well, thus he relies on me to translate so things to him, heh.

I don't suppose you need a whole lot of French, but it's handy to keep your English up.

You speak English and Portuguese right? Well like you said, if you speak English you could go almost anywhere. In your case it might be handy to learn some Spanish though, if most of your neighboring countries speak Spanish. Unless of course you never go there and never meet any tourists.
Also, I was thinking of working as a tourist guide during the 2014 World Cup, since my town will be one of the hosts. Maybe I should take some Spanish classes, since there should be lots of Spanish-speaking people around here by then.

Awesome! Seems like a nice job to me, but yeah you better learn some Spanish then.

And yeah, I have yet to visit some of our neighbour countries, mainly Uruguay and Argentina. My grandparents go there a few times during the year, maybe I can convince them to bring me during of of these trips. :)

I don't know if those countries are great holiday destinations. I have never heard of anyone in my life who went there.

So your Dad is some kind of journalist? Cool! Was it for a big newspaper?
Not really, he's graduated in Civil Engineering, but he works as some kind of high-ranked manager in the post-office social security (I don't know exactly what he does :P).

Civil Engineer? Cool.

I think when I'm an engineer I'd rather stick with engineering instead of doing some other job though :p But if the other job pays much better....

However, he has a great critic sense, and often writes mini-articles for the biggest local newspaper. I think it's the third time he had something published... He doesn't get anything for that, aside from having his words published. :P

Oh but it's great that your articles get published at least.

At 6/17/10 08:00 PM, Sir-Nuts wrote:
Lol. So the president is like... promoting the next left party's candidate? :p Yeah that is indeed unfair towards the other parties.
Indeed, and the hole got even bigger in the past months... :(

Our president had to pay some fines due to that (nothing huge, more like a warning). And now, there's the speculation that there are spies among the parties, working for the other party! :O

At least the candidate I'm voting for has nothing to do with that scandal. :)

Lol XD

I'm glad our government doesn't do those sort of things. I wouldn't thrust any of them if they did.

Haha so they're actually on vacation most days of the year? :p
Sort of. I'm afraid most of them won't show up to work during the world cup. They even wanted to vote a project that would extend their vacations during the wc, I think.

Isn't it abusive? =(

Hahaha. Oh well, our government is usually taking holidays as well at this time of year. It's usually the time when absolutely nothing happens in our country and papers just print everything that's slightly interesting XD

Yep. Seems to the case in quite a bunch of countries all across the world actually. Not sure which one of them actually throw people in jail for not showing up, but seems like even in Switzerland, Liechtenstein and Australia you will have to vote if you are allowed to.
Come to think of it, I think the same thing happens in here. If you don't vote, then you have to justify why you didn't vote. If you don't justify / don't have an apparent reason to not have voted, then you get a fine. If you don't pay that fine, then I THINK you go arrested, and have to pay a fine when you leave. :P

Yeah, I heard there was a similar system in Belgium. I guess it makes some sense to make people vote since at least you know that when someone has the majority they actually have the majority of the people behind them. Unlike in our country where only 70% or so showed up this time and in Rotterdam only 50% bothered to vote. And then of course those people still complain about politics =/

Lol. Well if I was poor I'd probably take the money as well. I mean there are probably not many fair politicians standing up for the poor people right?
Yeah, but still it's unfair for the ones who don't take it, right?

Yeah it is of course. The poor people should realize it's not gonna make them or the country any better on the long run.

Imagine what their son would be like?
A super director? At least that's what everyone would expect him to be, but of course he doesn't necessarily have to be very good at directing...
Indeed, but it would be interesting to see if he/she would have skills in doing so. Depends on how he/she would be raised, etc...

Yeah I just hope for him/her that he won't get forced to become a director if he doesn't really want to.

No, no. It's actually supposed to be a sequel to the books. Alice is now 19 instead of 7 and goes back to Wonderland to find out it's been taken over by the Red Queen. I'm just saying some elements Tim Burton added do not fit the books that well. The books are really not that serious you know, so fighting scenes and all that...
There are fighting scenes? O_o

Alice in Wonderland is already a pretty twisted story, and that just turns it weirder. Anyway, I'll have to wait until it's in the DVDs, thus I'll watch it in regular HD, instead of 3D. :)

Yes there are some fighting scenes and it's kinda weird.

I don't know if you should still go see the movie by the way. Now that I've let the movie sink into my mind I'm not sure if it was really that good. It has gotten a lot of criticism and I can't help but agree with most of it. It's alright still, but maybe you should just wait until it's on TV and don't waste too much money on it :p

It's already becoming more and more popular, but it seems to me like the cinema's now have a good excuse to cash in on some extra money. Because for most people it's still new and mindblowing and all that, so they'll go to the cinema anyway.
Indeed, and there are more and more movies coming out in 3D. MILK MORE CASH FROM US, WE'LL TAKE IT. >:(

Although they're also releasing "normal" versions along with them, I think only Alice and Avatar were 3D exclusives in here. Maybe because not all cinemas have the 3D technology, I guess...

Yes a couple of days ago I discovered that a whole shitload of movies are coming out in 3D this year. Harry Potter 7, Avatar: The Last Airbender, Toy Story 3, Shrek 4, a few other animations movies...

The worst thing is: Cinema's here only show the 3D versions of those movies. Or in Toy Story 3's case I could only watch the dubbed version (in dutch) in 2D, which blows >=(

Seriously, I find it enough reason to stop going to the cinema's. I really do not want to pay a few euros extra for that bullshit and if they even want to offer the 2D versions anymore because they're so greedy... >=(

Yeah I wish I could do that as well, but like I said, on the island I live there is not a single cinema. We have to go to Rotterdam which is at least a 20 minutes drive so... it's not like we will just go there if we are bored or something.
...And I just realised that the Netherlands consist of many separate islands. I swear I didn't know about that. :P

Haha I live in the South-West where there are a bunch of (small) islands and peninsulas. But all in all there aren't that many in our country actually. More than in Brazil though.

Yeah it sounds a bit like whining because they're starting to become popular among the masses which die-hard fans don't like. But indeed, as long as their music is still good, why complain?
Yeah, this happens a lot with some bands. Whenever they become popular, they automatically become "sellouts, making music for the money" etc... The same thing happened to Green Day when they released their best known album, "Dookie". But we all know what is Green Day today because of that album...

Although Green Day became pretty shitty lately. Either way, they'll play a concert in here in October, and I should go there. :)

I don't know, I'm not really following Green Day. Although I think they did get a bad image at some point, but that was already a while ago. Is "Dookie" one of their older albums?

And yeah I've heard their concerts were really good as well.
Metallica's concerts are great, not only for the music, but also for the effects. For example, during "One", the stage becomes some kind of battlefield, with a bunch of fireworks for explosions. :)

Haha I heard there's also a lot of pitting and wall of death-ing going on XD

Weird isn't it? The bands that usually play there are bands like The Kaiser Chiefs, Keane, Franz Ferdinand, The Killers, The Kooks, but also pop artists like Pink, Amy McDonald, Katy Perry etc.
I'd like to go there one day, then. :P Kaiser Chiefs, Keane, Franz Ferdinand and The Killers are among my favourite bands, I'd wear pink to see them. :P

Lol. You should just go to Europe then. They are really typical festival bands that can be found at almost any European festival during the summer.

It's really not a hardrock or heavy metal festival at all. Although they had Volbeat last year and this year they've managed to get Rammstein =/
Even Rammstein? That's far from being pop... o_O

Yeah I don't know why they decided to go play there. I guess they got a lot of money for it as they were the main act of this year.

At 6/17/10 08:01 PM, Sir-Nuts wrote:
1 dollar = 1.76 reais. So 150,00 reais = 85 dollars.
That's still a lot indeed for the cheapest ones. The cheapest seats at the U2 concert last summer were only 30 euros I believe, which equals about 45 dollars at the moment I think.
Which would be about R$80,00 in here. I'd definitely pay that to see U2 in here. :)

Yeah, we had the cheapest seats and it didn't matter much actually because the stage was round. So we were sitting fairly close to the stage, above the door that led to the changing rooms (which was great as they walked passed us before they came up) and could still see the whole show like normal ^^

And 40 reais for Muse is about 25 dollars then? That's really cheap man :p I'm sure they'd ask way more than 16 euros here.
Indeed, that was way cheap. It was a festival, though, and they weren't that famous in here (2008 - before the whole Twilight thing). It was an amazing concert, though, and I was very close to the stage. :)

I see. So you paid 25 dollars for a whole festival where Muse also played? The festival where I went to last year was 80 euros per day (or 140 for all three days) =/

Speaking of Twilight, their new song BLOWS. What has Twilight done to them? :(

Twilight?

Haha I just looked it up on Youtube. This is indeed a clear case of a hidden message, but is Old Pink a reference to Syd Barrett then? I also listened to the full song backwards and something else seems to be said after the message, but I can't really hear what it says.
Yeah, he's the "Old Pink". I think someone calls him after that and the message is cut.

Either way, it's well hidden. :P

It is, although I believe you could find them using an old LP player. You won't be able to find them so easily anymore on MP3's or CD's.

Definitely. If they came to Holland then I'd definitely try to get some tickets for it, and I know plenty of people who would do anything to get there as well.
If they played in here, my cousin would go, no matter what. He's an avid fan of Pink Floyd, even more than my dad. ^^

Roger Waters is gonna perform The Wall here next year, but sadly it was already sold out very quickly :(

I don't know if he's gonna go to Brazil as well, but maybe you should try to find out before it's sold out ;)

Never heard of it before, but sounds plausible to me. Their music always seems a bit.. anti-government-ish for some reason.
The songs in Black Holes and Revelations have some political message behind them, in the thoughts of making a revolution and criticizing the government. I think there are some like that as well in Resistance, but I don't really like that album and I haven't listened to it a lot to think about that. :P

Yeah. I don't know that much about it, but The Resistance seemed like an entire album dedicated to criticizing the government and the established order.

They seem like the kinda band that would do such a thing. Aren't they getting a lot of inspiration out of classical music?
They had a 15-minute song (split in three) that was orchestrated in their latest album, so I'll think yes. :P

Yeah I heard Matt Belamy was a big fan of Beethoven or something? And I know I listened to that song, but I can't remember the title...

Too bad he smokes, though. :(
Hehe that's gonna ruin his voice someday :p
Hopefully it'll be just like Mick Jagger. :P

Is his voice ruined so much? I heard him perform not too long ago and he sounded good.

I find that I learn more English through reading books than through classes. I felt like a genius when I learned to use former and latter correctly, whenever that was.

Aye, it's sad to see basic English failing. I'm just glad the USA isn't suffering alone.

Yeah, I feel that. My list has me run six miles each day, though not today because it was burning outside. When I get home I swear to myself I will never run again, and the next day I look forward to it. My list also includes audio reviewing which I've, um, not been doing.

Request an audio review. I could use some motivation.

Haha yeah I hear many people are angry over that and hate Luis Suarez now. I think it was a fairly clever move and I most likely would have done the same. Ghana gained the ultimate opportunity afterwards to win the game, but they failed to score the penalty so I think they only got themselves to blame for their elimination. However, I don't like how they should parade Suarez around either, because it is sort of cheating and shouldn't be rewarded/encouraged in any way.

Exactly - FIFA needs to make rules to deal with this eventuality. In the days when one of the most respected umpires can cost a young pitcher a perfect game in baseball, a good angle to view the ball still means that he's the only man in the stadium that didn't see the goal (We wouldn't have gone further than that round, but it's the principle!) and yet a tennis player can challenge a line call and have a decision in seconds.

On the bright side though, Uruguay has even less of a chance to make it to the finals now that they are missing one of their star players.

It makes little difference.

I wonder how it would have turned out if we had Beckham playing...
Would that have made a difference? I don't know, that guy is almost 36 by now (?), is way past his peak and was never such a great player to begin with if you ask me. He could take wonderful free kicks, but that's about it for him.

He'd have still worked harder than most of the players on the pitch. That's the thing about him - his work rate.

Alex Ferguson; Arsene Wenger?
Are they arrogant pricks? I never hear that many bad things about them. I know van Persie liked Wenger very much because he gave him the chance to grow and become such a great player.

Ferguson kicked a boot in the dressing room and hit Beckham in the face with it. Wenger is a bigger whiner about referees than Jose. They'd booth be beaten into a cocked hat by Brian CLough - the greatest manager that England never had.

They shouldn't get horny over a penicorn, though.

And you wouldn't want a horny dragon with a sword for a dick humping you.

A sword up your ass is nasty.

I think it's Haggard's turn to win Most Underrated.
Yep. I'm not planning on 'pulling a Bahamut', so I hope someone else will win next time. Problem is, too many people here I would want to vote for :(

I've already got my mind set for the next person to vote for Most Underrated.

That's what amazes me. Most of this was done live and possibly on the first take yet his jokes were well timed and are some of his strongest efforts.
I don't know, he seems like a good improviser to me and most of his videos always come off as spontaneous efforts (although they are probably not).

If you watch the videos, you can tell he's going through it for the first time but he does get help from his fans so he doesn't get stuck for days like I would have been.

I just think they shouldn't have made spells like ... items. Magic became hardly useful in the game as using the stronger spells would only weaken your character.

That was my biggest gripe with the junction system as well as magic. No MP so it was item-like which was rather annoying, especially when you needed to get the rarer magic spells.

Rikku indeed seems to be there just for fan service. Like when she got out of that wetsuit =/

The game was made in Japan so it's no surprise to me. That's actually considered as normal over there. :P Something tells me Spoony wouldn't last a day in Japan.

I've just become far too used to the differences to even make mistakes on them anymore.

Aye, it's sad to see basic English failing. I'm just glad the USA isn't suffering alone.

As the ENGLISH language, it's a shame to see many Brits not taking their language seriously.

Yeah, and finding a good thread over there is very difficult. Maybe you can recommend some threads to us. ;)

The problem is that any half decent thread in General will likely be buried long before any good regulars can get to it. There was one the other day made by some unlikely spammer which was a discussion about humanity's role in the ecosystem and our effect on the planet, but again that was buried relatively quickly because there weren't enough people who were willing to actually write a more thought-out post in response to the subject matter.

While it's painfully obvious that the General forum is mainly for +1 dicking around-style posting, it's nice to see the odd thread that actually warrants some semi-intelligent discussion in the midst of all the crap. The problem is that in order to find that rarest of General threads, you have to wade through the rest of the proverbial shitheap, which can take a whiiiiile.

Also there's no guarantee that there will be one good thread in any given time period. You might be waiting a day, a week, or a month. :(

Getting drunk: Ok.

I'd rather enjoy some good music while drinking. :P

There are still big differences between west and east right?
Yeah, most of all that nobody want's to live there because unemployment rates are so high. They also don't get the same wages that are payed in other parts of the country.
Strange. You would think that after 20 years the differences would've almost vanished, since Germany put so much effort in making both sides equal.

Well, have a look at Belgium for example. This country has even bigger problems within their borders.
Also I think it's not so much that not enough effort is put into making both sides equal but there still seems to be a "wall" inside the heads of some (mostly older) people.
