lol I never saw that game. Back in the SNES days I only had one store to go and they never had a copy of it to rent

Level 8 in SMB 1 was probably the hardest 4 stages i've ever had to do in a mario game.

its worse than MIM, you had to go through time knowing your history, it sucked hard.

I'd assume Lost Levels. Which isn't hard, but is compared to every other Mario game in existence. I wrote a guide on it.

As for what I found hardest, the boss at the end of world 5 on SMB2 and the second fortress in world 7 of SMB3 are bastards. Without hammers or p-wing, I can't do the second one.
