i mean, what do most people do when they want to complete a project, but they just arent motivated to work on it anymore? do they abandon it, or just take a break?
Its not just you. Lots of people give up on projects all the time. Me included. But lately i have tryed to only make short projects and a few that i dont really have to commit to. Its working so far. I have actually finished a few projects.
i agree it isnt just you i get board to death and by the time im half way in movie/game i wanna do somthing else

It's not just you. Ihave many projects that are only 'half' done. It's a matter of what mood your in and motivation. I should finish one soon (I hope... given time).
It also depends on why you are doing flash. To learn or to be an artist, a job or what.
You name me exactly.I start a new project and get bored of it,but I don't want to delete because I know I'll eventually finish it.Just look at my work so far, just about all of it is unfinished...and my CPU has maybe 20 or more Game Files that I haven't worked on.

When I don't want to work but I feel I must, I put on some music I like, get a snack to eat and drink, make myself comfortable and then I FORCE MY LAZY ASS TO WORK!
Works sometimes.
well im working on this amazing game, but the more time i put into it, the less i seem to actually accomplish. i just feel so lazy with it, because i completed a MASSIVE amount of coding in the first five days or so, and its been about three weeks, and i havent improved much, despite the fact that i always have macromedia flash open, ATTEMPTING to do some work.
and i do this work for the love of coding. sure, i love the attention my work gets, but there is something about all these lines of code that give me a major hard-on. go figure.
usually I'll have like 3 projects I'm working on (like 2 movies and a game) that way if I get burnt out on working on one, I move to the next one, when I get bored of that I go to the next one. If you keep working n those in cycles you can usually get them all if not most of them done.
Heck yes i do. I start something.......take a long break...Get an idea...start another...get another idea...start that...get bored...start another..x123123433
Taking breaks is good. I'm working on a project, and i get bored with it...
I've got about 10 projects which io started and never finished.
All my animations are the results of me having a good idea then getting too tired and unmotivated to finish them or work harder on them, i find it best to just face the fact that flash animations take alot of hard work and time. I been lucky enough to do paid work which i get excited about them when i've finally finished after a few months i'm lying in my own depressed waste.
P.S clock movies suck.
it's hard. it really is, especially when video games are in the same room as the stuff your working on. but i can get myself to work only if like i'm alone and have a free 3 hours. that's my problem, when i start one part i have to give myself enough time to finish it or else i go crazy. which reminds me that i have to get back to work eventually. it's been 3 days now. *sigh*
I have loads of unfinished projects littering my Flash folder. I promise myself I'll finish them someday, but I can almost guarantee I won't because of the lack of motivation and inspiration. Thats the key to continuing a movie - inspiration.
Its the reason I have nothing in the portal. I can never be bothered to finish anything worth submitting.
I do it too, here is my Flash folder..
12,631 files, 1,110 folders, 524MB.
That shocked me too :O
Sup, bitches :)
I'm getting bored with my project right now, but I'm keeping motivated because it's awesome right now. More addicting and longer than magnetism, and the best graphics of any of my games so far. It's really fun too, but at level 46 I'm starting to get bored. Oh well, almost half way done, If I hurry up i could finish it soon. I'm expecting it to get 4.10+, and that keeps me motivated.
The hardest part of making something is staying motivated.

Same here, only I ususlly complete the engine in a few days. My latest game has it's main engine 100% done, and I made it easy for me to add new levels. All I do is specify some values for each level and write a description and BAM the level is done. Only problem is that that gets boring and it can take 20 minutes to tweak a level to the right difficulty. And I set a goal of 100 levels. I'm putting a lot of work into this game.

well keep it up. i love seeing your work in the portal. my game is a bit slower paced, but i feel i could at least get a 3.9 with it. it is a RTS battle game with an AI (that i keep putting off programming. i just know ill start it and end up half-assing it) and full unit and building upkeep. it seems like its going to be a great game when its done. just GETTING there isnt quite so simple.
I think if i actually had a deadline, and was made to do the project, i would get it done. I think the reason i don't get my projects finished is because i have too much freedom, so i can just say 'i can't be bothered'. If someone was making me do it, i would have to do it.
...my problem isn't the boredom so much as the lack of ability! I get stuck on something... try repeatedly to work it out... with no luck... get frustrated and start something else...thinking that the next project will help me understand it all and I'll be able to go back and finish. Now... countless projects later... I still haven't figured it out! ...gah! I suck! ...now I'm depressed... thanks alot! ;P
