Can I join?

I am a diehard Atheist, which makes it hard since my parents are diehard christians. Some of the crap they come up with is amazing.

also: If I am accepteed, do I just put a link into my sig?

Maybe you should point out some examples. Although I suppose I know what you mean, since the next bit is a diatribe about how not all religious people are nutjobs.

drastically since science became an overriding force - no burning at the stake, torture, cruel and unusual punishment, no slavery - I propose that this is evidence that religion has no place in modern society.

Science does not have anything to do with religion except explain the natural phenomenon that a god was believed to be responsible for. Religion is by no means obsolete, and I doubt it will be. People find peace and spiritual tranquility from religion (if theyre doing it right).

When you've got Sunnis bombing Shi'ites over who controls Iraq, that's evidence that it's the religion that is causing the division, not some political reason. One only needs to delve into the history books to see other atrocities committed in the name of religion. Now, you can come back shouting about Communism, but I have yet to see any flaws in a secular or irreligious rational democracy, the kind of which I am proposing.

There is always a political reason to war. The grunts out there fighting believe it is for salvation in the afterlife or whatever, but the higherups are telling them that to push forward their own goals. I hate to sound paranoid, but there is always a hidden agenda behind any action.

Wow, amazing, I know countless intelligent Muslims, where the fuck did I say Muslims were towelheads? Easy to argue against a straw man.

I didn't say you did call them towelheads, I was using a euphemism.

It is, however, the reverence for the holy book that moderate Muslims have that would compel people to actually read the Qu'ran and follow the more extremist scholars when it comes to the matter of the law. The moderates are still reading from the same book, and it's not really a very pretty book when it comes down to it.

I've yet to read it because I havent gotten to middle-eastern language yet (working on mediterranean and eastern language first), but I have heard its beautiful.

I think there are countless things that bring society together, like national anthems, reverence for freedoms and institutions, football games, television shows, beloved celebrities, history... I think religion is more of a divisive thing than a 'bringing together thing', at least nowadays. At work, or even at school, you might have noticed that some of the 'cliques' are built on race and religion.

Cliques are based on everything. People naturally form cliques anyway and they aren't necessarily a bad thing.
Religion also in part brought the pilgrims over here in the first place, and without religion uniting the Greek city-states, Xerxes would have flattened them before Athens brought on their golden age from which we base our way of thought, education, and archetecture.

It benefits community on a local scale, offering friendship and community service.
Plenty of things could do that, and there'd be something to fill its place if it went.

There are many others.

Also, you aren't taking into account the eastern religions which have never done anything wrong to my knowledge.
There have been wars fought between Muslims and Hindus, and Hindus and Buddhists. And by saying that, you're acknowledging that in your mind Western religions have done something wrong, anyway, or are at least worse than Eastern ones.

Between Muslims and Hindus? The really ancient muslims took over the hindu cities because the hindus didn't fight back. The hindus had an ideal called ahimsa, meaning non-violence. The buddhists have a similar principal. Name one war or battle between the Buddhists and the Hindus. Just one. I am saying that the western religions have been abused by the people in charge of them in the past, not that they are bad.

So why did you make a place where people can spew ignorance and think theyre better than anyone else?
What ignorance? We're just not the religious apologists you'd rather us be.

Typical new poster:
:Hi guiz im new to this. I think all religon is pointless I dont kno why its her

I would prefer to have a thread with intellegent philosophical and theosophical discussions from the viewpoint of atheists, rather than a place where new users come to troll and go religion bashing.

Sorry for the double post.

I've just watched 1408 and resident evil: Extinction on the INTERNEZ. I thought they would be cheap flicks that get their 15 minutes of fame and be forgotton.

They're not bad. Both big of a drag in places and slightly boring but I wouldn't feel bad watching them again.

First off, science is the study of the physical world, while religion is a way to study the metaphysical (i.e. spiritual) world. I would say that metaphysical philosophy (the use of logic to contemplate the metaphysical world) is the opposite of religion. Science however is in a different (not necessarily better, but different) league.

Also, a good leader is able to rally their people with anything. Hitler took advantage of the economic crisis in Germany to get elected into his totalitarian position, which he used to start WW2, the same way that the leaders of the fighting muslims are taking advantage of the conflict to push forth their own plans.

I believe that it's bigoted for anyone to claim that they absolutely know that there IS or ISN'T a god of some kind. There's no way to know. There's a finite number of people on the face of the earth who will conceive a finite number of possibilities about the afterlife before the earth is obliterated by either the sun, global climate change, an asteroid, or nuclear war. Yet there is an infinite number of possibilities as to what is (or isn't) beyond this plain of existence. You bigoted slime are as bad as the very religious institutions that you oppose. There's only one way to go; agnosticism. Accept the fact that we have no idea of what is (or isn't) beyond our petty lives and there is no way to prove it either way. If you're really curious, you could attempt to develop a method to discover the truth. You're in my prayers. HA HA.

Suck my balls. I've already got enough e-credibility as an atheist.

Science does not have anything to do with religion except explain the natural phenomenon that a god was believed to be responsible for.

You mean, both are methods of explaining the world, that contradict.

Religion is by no means obsolete, and I doubt it will be. People find peace and spiritual tranquility from religion (if theyre doing it right).

You mean, the purpose of religion has been marginalised to the point where, if anyone looked at it sensibly, they'd see every religion is as wrong as every other one and everyone who 'needed' religion for 'spiritual tranquillity' would get it from some universal deism.

There is always a political reason to war.

Which is often religiously motivated.

The grunts out there fighting believe it is for salvation in the afterlife or whatever, but the higherups are telling them that to push forward their own goals. I hate to sound paranoid, but there is always a hidden agenda behind any action.

And if religion is being used as a tool, if religion is the easiest thing ever to use to manipulate nice people, then religion is acting negatively.

I didn't say you did call them towelheads, I was using a euphemism.

No you weren't, you don't even know what a euphemism is; you were using a straw man.

I've yet to read it because I havent gotten to middle-eastern language yet (working on mediterranean and eastern language first), but I have heard its beautiful.

I've flicked through an English translation, and it's not. It's about as dull, meandering, and full of pointless rules as the Bible.

Cliques are based on everything. People naturally form cliques anyway and they aren't necessarily a bad thing.

They are if Sunnis are blowing up Shi'ites; even if there's some Sunni overlord and some Shi'ite overlord calling the shots cos they want to get rich, the suicide bombers are all being deeply devout.

Religion also in part brought the pilgrims over here in the first place, and without religion uniting the Greek city-states, Xerxes would have flattened them before Athens brought on their golden age from which we base our way of thought, education, and archetecture.

And that is relevant to the 21st century... how?

It benefits community on a local scale, offering friendship and community service.
Plenty of things could do that, and there'd be something to fill its place if it went.
Between Muslims and Hindus? The really ancient muslims took over the hindu cities because the hindus didn't fight back. The hindus had an ideal called ahimsa, meaning non-violence. The buddhists have a similar principal. Name one war or battle between the Buddhists and the Hindus.

Heard of the Tamil Tigers?

Just one. I am saying that the western religions have been abused by the people in charge of them in the past, not that they are bad.

If it's very easy to abuse an ideology to cause evil, then the ideology should be discarded. Like Eugenics has been.

Hi guiz im new to this. I think all religon is pointless I dont kno why its her

So the only way to not be bigoted is to believe exactly what you believe. I see. Lol.

There are no married bachelors or square circles beyond this plain of existence. Likewise, there is no all-loving God who answers your prayers; it's not being bigoted to dismiss such notions.

In the very short time I've been here I've started to see a pattern which has brought up some issues.

It appears that the only time when this thread is alive is when some 13 year old has a hissy fit and ends up leaving even more pissed off thinking Atheists are aggressive assholes.

So my question is:
What's with all the hatin?

Can't we all just get along and just chat? We could talk about the weather, movies, relationships etc. I'm sure most other clubs do plenty of small talk.

It might relieve some tension.

So AA, how are you?

I've cut down on the drink. What I have been doing is working out during the night. Usually till 3 in the morning. I don't know why you ask? I just do. However my right arm wen't numb and my left is killing me.
