As of 2004 this was agreed upon ranking of the worlds Militaries.
Top Ten Armies of the World
According to the CIA and other Intelligence Services (European, Asian, African) this is the tally - based on a Combination of Manpower, Technology, Firepower, Training, Resources, Available Reserves, and Nuclear Potential (Current or Likely):
1. USA
2. China
3. Germany
4. India
5. France
6. Russia
7. UK
8. Italy
9. Israel
10. Pakistan
Personally im very surprised to see france on their, but i suppose they do have a few nukes, so the deserve mention China and US are somewhat close
China has a larger army, But poor military training and their Navy/Air Force are out-dated and slow.
http://www.cnn.com/W...military/index.html
I thought Russia would be a bit higher but considering how their system is corrupt, (i.e. metal cutting, mineral processing, weapon manufacturing and engineering, are very very poor) they have the intelligence and military for it, but their economy sucks
Isreal and Pakistan only show up because theyre armies are active and on high alert (the war is also based in theyre homes so enlistment rates are very high as are military funding)
Germany however was obvious, despite theyre small stature they are incredibly organized and highly trained/committed, however they have no finesse in the art of combat taking on Russia and America at the same time... not smart... (thats speaking loosely, they are occasionally tactical geniouses)
India was surprising at first but then they are getting theyre act together, cant think of a source but i heard somewhere that they now had nukes.
Those are just my thoughts, read a few of the topics around and theirs a lot of arguement over who the superpowers are and all this 10 year old im better than u crap, this list is official, its the agreed upon ranking of global military powers by all nations involved. i stumbled upon it trying to find Military populations for a paper in economics. If u dont agree fine, post and explain ur belief y it is otherwise, but dont just say "this is bull, canada kicks americas ass" (eheheheh... srry couldnt resist... canada...military...hehe)

Russia 6? I would at least put them 2 or 3. I mean, am I the only one that remembers all the crap they created and had in the Cold War?

ya it surprised me to... theyve really gone down hill since then, their at least 5 years behind most other countries technologically, being a closed nation they dont have access to all the advances made by the rest of the world unless it becomes commercial, or they steal it

Unfortunately for us, China's military has advanced rapidly since when that article was written. They've been buying weapons and technology from Europe and Israel for the past 5 years. Fortunately, they still have a ways to go. There only aircraft Carrier, the Varyang, is of old Soviet manufacturing, and is barely afloat.

Turkey is #3 in t he world in size apparently, but it doesn't make it onto there..mind you any nation that issues AK-47 to its soldiers deserves to be off the list...

It's quite ironic that muslim militants, unequipped as they are, have the US trembling more than the might of all the earth's armed forces.
Those who adopt fear tactics are super-powers in their own right.

Ya but their buying it at a pace that will only surpass the US late next century.
Ak's however out-dated they are now, were once upon a time one of the best weapons, cheap, reliable(unlike the m12), and accurate.

Only because they have no front to attack, and they attack civilians, thats dirt to me. Dont deserve recognition. A country can be targetted and held responsible for their actions, a moving terorist cell however will spread their point by killing innocent women and children, and will cower in the shadows as they do it.
If u could get all the terrorists gathered in a room, and tell the the army, 20-30 force recon soldiers could probably take them in less than 10minutes. Terrorists arent amazingly trained, theyre just capable of carring and detonating a bomb, a 6 year old could do it, its so dangerous because its so easy
The problem in that the musilim people ARENT the problem, its a few bastards who decide they want to hurt America and spread terror (ironically our media cares more about micheal jacksons affair than a terrorsit attack on a mall)

It would appear that our Russian breathren have developed/are developing a new high-speed torpedo that would level the playing field for other countries (*cough* China) trying to catch up to our level of Naval power.
As it stands now, America's greatest military assest now is its Navy, as no other country has an even comparably large nuclear powered fleet as we do, or the ability to stealthily launch a nuclear strike from submarines (the Russian "Typhoon" class being to lumbersome and loud to be able to sneak into a firing position anywhere close to the U.S. coastline). This new torpedo, however, could change that...

This goes back to something i said earlier, the russians have the intelligence to design something, but not the materials to pull it off
i also dont think this will be to big of a threat, theyre are only 60 chinese subs in their army (kinda pathetic compared to Americas) and we would win any engagement just by shear mass
not to mention that i dont think the chinese can pull it off in the first place, our air force would knock out their carriers easily, and their current subs couldnt make it to US waters solo, not enough power

I respect the German army the most. America has the most developed army by far, but the discipline of the German soldier is unmatched. I know its not the same army as 60 years ago (the III Reichs army was absolutly ideal except for the fact that they killed many of my bretheren) but Germany is able to mobilize itself as a super power in a matter of few years (just as in the 1930's). I just wonder, is it in their blood or were they just so fanaticaly blind?

Both, actually. The Treaty of Versailles got them so screwed-up that they just followed blindly when a strong leader (derailedly megalomaniacal and lunatic as it was, but strong nonetheless) popped up.
Also, they got the Prussians.

It would be ill-advised to underestimate the threat posed by a weapon such as the supersonic torpedo. As can be seen by historical precedent in the Falkland Islands war, with the sinking of the HMS Sheffield (among other ships) by a French-made Exocet missile, even the world's strongest navies are susceptible to unorthodox weaponry. http://en.wikipedia...ing_of_HMS_Sheffield
Speaking as an individual from a proud Navy family, our current fleet is well aware of the danger posed by low flying (so as to evade radar detection) missiles. The concept of a supersonic torpedo is even more frightening because absolutely no contingency exists to combat such an attack.
While it is true that a war against the PLA would likely (at least from the naval standpoint) result in our victory by shear mass and technology, it is important to note that weapons such as the Exocet missile (the Chinese have similar missiles) and or supersonic torpedo could make the cost quite grave. Since both weapons can be launched from afar by a diverse array of combat craft (both naval and airborne), they must not be underestimated.

Supersonic torpedo? Its only going like 200 something miles er hour. Sure as hell aint supersonic, or even close to it, especially in water.
And all of this doesnt matter. The US can track all of their subs quite easily without detection. A Chinese sub would never get into position where they would be able to fire this torpedo. If they ever made a move at a carrier fleet, they would be on the bottom before they could even think about firing a torpedo.
Unless the Chinese can somehow ever get free of American subs and get quieter, they have no chance of ever using this technology, which I am not even sure if it is true and works. I mean, Russia magically makes a torpedo that can go 200+ mph a decade after the end of the Cold War. Right. With their decimated Navy and limitied funds, they have trouble fielding what they have, let alone upgrading.

I didn't believe it at first, but yeah you're right. Well, technically they're fourth, (in 1998). But what surprised me the most is that the UK are listed below Germany and France. I mean, Germany has the Leopard tank, but still. I always thought that the British navy was very powerful, and they actually have nukes. Maybe it's because Germany has twice as much military personnel as the British.

They may also be measuring manufacturing ability and locational power. There is a hell of a lot more to a strong military than technology and personnel.

well Germany i can understand pretty easily, theyve always been up there, borderline superpowers, however theyve been carefully monitered since Hitle, so their militaries been held back some
France kinda blew me away... i mean... seriously... FRANCE? until i saw this i thought france was right up there with Canada in terms of Military.

Everyone always expects alot from Italy but when the time comes they just go on vacation or something. Italy pretty much matches UK and France in population and GDP, and they have a strong navy and alot of ports.

Yeah sure. Wait a tick... WW2 killed 55 million people.... how many people have died from Terrorism so far? Theres a difference between trembling and kicking ass, the latter is more like terrorists focusing all thier power to pull off a few attacks that are cleaned up in a day and then the US taking over Afghanistan with 13 spec ops soldiers.
Being able to make headlines doesn't make you a super power, terrorism never made anyone surrender.

Russia took a big hit in the cold war, but their not completely out of the game yet, Theyre still pretty smart even if their economy sucks. I give em a century b4 the die, or do something really stupid

Compulsory military service and a huge military budget. People forget that France often sends troops to quell 'riots' in thier former colonies. In other words, invade.
