Drum machine? Realistic drums?

What do you guys use/recommend for getting the most realistic drum sounds in your audio (if you can't get a real drummer, obviously)? The midi drums get the job done, but they sound very artificial by comparison.
Drum machines? (If so, what brands do you like/use?)
VST plugins? (If so, what brands do you like/use?)
Thanks in advance for your help.

Personally i use samples i find on the net, make them myself with my kit or use reason drums so far.
Define what you mean by a real sound, if you mean dynamics like real kit reason is the way forward, but its much much more than just a drum machine.

This may be very newbish of me but, where do you find samples of drum loops on the net? I've never done anything like that before (sampling). Thank you for the idea.

By this I mean "as near as possible a simulation of what an actual drum set/drummer would sound like were one to be available." Of course, if I could just kidnap a drummer off the street and use him/her (for drumming... not for other purposes... tee hee) that would be ideal. Except for the going to jail part. That would be... upsetting.
Barring that scenario, I'm looking for the most accurate simulacra of a drummer -- the best of the next-best thing.
I've heard a lot of good things about Reason, I'm just slightly turned off by the price. I mean, essentially the only use I'd have for the program would be the drum sounds, and to buy the whole program just for that function would be a little like buying a new house just for the air conditioner in it. In essence, I'm actually looking for more of a one-trick pony, rather than a comprehensive music-making program. Just the drums.
Thank you for the idea.

If you can't find a humanoid drummer then a drum machine is the next best thing.
I have a drum machine - BOSS Dr.Rhythm DR670.
(not trying to advertise here) click on my sig picture below for the songs that I make with a drum machine. My music style is metal though, so you'll only hear metal style drums.
Check it out.

Thanks dude -- I will make sure and check it out tonight when I get home.
Most of my stuff will be rock/metal stuff anyways, and the video game stuff will be mostly rock/metal oriented anyhow -- so the genre is not an obstacle. Thanks.

A drum machine would be the route to go but if you can't afford one I would say download Acoustica Beatcraft. They are the drums GoreBastard uses and sound really great.

You're way out of line Spam.
Try Soundfonts, and there are plenty of drum machines, look into the Synth Threads, you can find them in the sticky thread "New to Audio? Click Here"

Look, if you don't want to help, then get lost and don't fucking reply, asshole.
Firstly, I never said it was up to you. I asked the board -- those who wanted to help did. Those who didn't, or didn't have an opinion didn't. You just shot your mouth off because you're retarded. Just keep your ignorant mouth shut next time.
Secondly, since you're being a prick -- I would be picking my own sounds; I'm asking others what they do to pick out theirs. It's not a given that I will necessarily use one or any of them. So don't make stupid assumptions and make an ass out of yourself.

Yes, clearly i'm out of line, after trying to help and getting frustrated with what seemed like a bloody stupid response to what i actually do to find my samples. Its a dog eat dog world, and i'm no catfish. Of course, if he wants to be emo, and start bitching over nothing, he's more than welcome....

PC Drummer it's actual sampled drums and you operate it easily. You can make measures and stack them in different orders so that it gives you a fill. Then so you don't have to register it you can just play and record it off the puter using mono mix.

If you actually read the above, you'll see that (a) when you did say something helpful, I thanked you. If you read EVERY OTHER POST IN THIS THREAD, you'll notice that EVERY time ANYBODY answered, I thanked them too.
I only said "thanks for nothing" when you ridiculed me by pointing me to "justfuckinggoogleit.com" as a joke - because that obviously wasn't helpful, and was meant to be condescending. So, again, instead of either (a) being helpful, or (b) doing nothing, you chose option (c), being a dick.
If you wouldn't have been a dick about it, none of this would have happened. Also, notice that no one else had anything nasty to say -- just you.

The rest of your response is useless baiting -- this will be my last reply to you.

To everyone else, thanks again, and of course, further suggestions are always welcome.
I did download a version of Acoustica Bearcraft last night -- it seems pretty good, and even the version for sale is a mere $40. Seems inexpensive and easy to work with, with good quality sounds. I'll be sure to check out the other recommendations - I heard good things about the Boss drum machine also. All of this is great stuff!

Damn Spam, cut him some slack, after all he's just starting. We all used to be on the same place at one point, and it was people like you who slowed us down. So calm down, a little help never hurt anybody.
Hey man, you might find Chris Child's site useful, also if you go to FutureProducers.com you might find stuff that's really helpful.

I am curious as to what program you are using to make the rest of your music, or are you playing live music and looking for a drum engine to add to your recordings? If you are created any synth albeit hip hop to techno and such, I would have to say Reason should cover all your bases. I agree, it is pricey, but since I have had it I couldn't believe I made music without it. The drum kits provided by Reason are the most realistic sounds I have ever heard. In the event that you use all of the thousands of percussion hits and loops a becoming bored of them you can readily search and apply more sounds either shopping for packaged kits, or browsing loops as some of the other posts said.
If you are just looking to add drums to your live recordings then you probably will want to look for a physical drum machine. I don't know much about these though.
My answer: If you make everything from scratch already--Reason may be hands down the best deal for your money.
Hope that helps.

I'm not assuming anything -- you are insulting me. And you're a dick.
This does not constitute "running away" -- I'm just going to focus my energies on people who care enough to help, and not waste time spouting useless insults and using dismissive misdirection in response to a geniune question.
Get a fucking life, loser.

More of the latter than the former. I have Cubase (but haven't installed it yet) and I write a lot of midi stuff on an old version of Cakewalk. The guitar parts I insist on doing live. Some of my stuff will be all live performance stuff, some will be just midi, some a synthesis of the two. The limitation of this however is that the drum sounds I currently have (just midi) sound.... well... awful. So, yes, ideally I'd be most interested in finding an accurate drum-sound simulator to sort of tack on to existing music to replace the scrubby drums that are on them now.

You know, a whole lot of people have been advocating Reason. I may have to look into it more. Maybe I'm mistaken, but I assumed that Reason was primarily for use in Techno/electronic music (or at least that's what most of the promotional material used to advertise it is). But it seems like a wide range of users here use it. I'll give it a good look.
Thanks a lot dude.

Anyway, thought that was your last reply to me?
You lose on your own terms, or something.
Not too arsed tbh, i've heard get a life loser more than i care, and its not really an insult off someone who's currently on the internet asking for help that google and searching and PUTTING SOME EFFORT IN can provide.

requiem zer0, SpamWarrior, STOP THIS FUCKING ARGUMENT. iT'S GETTING YOU NOWHERE.
Basically all I can see from your quabbling is that both of you are trying to get the last word. On a system like this it is never going to end.
requiem, I can see that SpamWarrior was trying to help, and you kinda threw it back in his face.
However, Spam, afterwards you were taking the 'thanks for nothing' concept too seriously and starting verbally insulting requiem zero.
All I can say is I want this argument to finish and for you two to come clean (not tring to sound like a mother).
