I choose to go to class, since it's impossible to catch up in college if you don't, but I felt really bad for not going to services. I'm going to go home this weekend to go to my temple, however. And I will definately be fasting.

yeah, modern life conflicts with temple sometimes, but it's nice to go to temple even if i miss school. of course, i'm still in the public school system, so i'm not paying for my time...but still.

Well hey all its been awhile.
Well the day of atonement is on us once again. I know none of you will be spending it as I will fasting and spending all day in synagogue. However I just want to request you do something to acknowledge saturday as the holiest of all days of the year. Remember god judges each man on his level. So even if means eating the kosher salad as opposed the none-kosher BLT try something.
Have a G'mar chasima tova and happy New year .
Shalom.

anyone else do Rosh Hashannah today? my rabbi is fairly long winded, so we went an hour or so overtime :/
i missed tashlich this year, so i've still got my sins about me.

You can do tashlich up until shmini atzeres wich is the 23rd day of tishrei. as i type it is the 9th day so you still got time.(jew days start at night) anyway i think we all have long winded rabbi's, it comes with the semicha(ordination)

Hmmm, haven't been here for ages, as for me, I'm Jewish by default, I don't really believe in going anywhere to pray or anything but I do have some respect to the religion as I was born into it. What I wanted to know is, if Yom Cipur falls on Saturday this year, and Saturdays are considered as they day of feasting and joy, who overpowers who, are we more obligated to fast on Saturday as it's Yom Cipur, or are we more obligates to follow what what's in the bible which says we have to be joyful on Saturday.

I don't really care but I might as well ask just to trouble you here.

Well Yom kippur is called "SHabbos Shabbosun" A Shabbos of Shabbosim. (Shabbos is another word for the Sabbath). In most cases when a fast falls out on Shabos it gets pushed to the next day however every other fast is due to mourning. yom kipur fasting is done because on this day we are closer to god and we don't indulge in physical pleasures. Which is why we orthodox dont eat, were leather, take a shower, or have sexual relations on Yom Kipur. There is no reason not to be joyful. This is not tisha B'av. So i guess in short the answer is yes we do fast this year on the sabbath.

Hey all, I fasted all day long for the first time, which is difficult for me only because I have a stomach condition known as acid reflux, JOY!

Anyway, my girlfriend and an aliyah as she is the new Youth Advisor for the older group of teens at my temple. Maybe I'll join her in two years, though I'm unsure.

And yeah, that whole no sexual pressure really sucks on Yom Kippur when you only get to see your gf once every month. :'(

Well tonight is shemini atzeres. Thursday however is Simchas torah, a very happy day when we complete the cycle of the pentateuch and begin it once again. its customary that everyone, young and old get called up for an aliyah on this day. So make sure you go to synogogue :D
once again cha'g sameach everyone.

Woo, almost 6 months after my original post, can I join?

I'm a conservative Jew, I had my bar mitzvah a few years ago, and I still do some hebrew school, but only when I feel like it.

So... What's up?

Of course you can join. As for what's up, it's the sky I think.

Anyway more to the topic of Jewishness, my girl friend's gf is a Rabbi, so if/when I marry her, her mom will want to do the ceremoney, but she also require couples to do therapy with her. So, I somehow convinced my gf to convince her mom to skip that.

Personally, I'd rather not talk about some things with my potential future mother in law, even if she is a Rabbi.
