Yeah if your running 3.1 miles your going to burn alot of calories. If you burn calories you'll lose weight.Simple as. What you should do is have a small simple meal before your run e.g a piece of fruit and a yogurt. After your run you'll want to replenish the calories you lost. Have a big meal with plently of carbohydrates, fruit etc.

Fucking bastards managing my Gym.. They decided it would be better to switch to high-density rubber dumbells. They not only feel lighter.. but when you hit 80 lbs or so, they're fucking 2 feet wide, which makes it hard to get a full motion to your rep.

Complain to the managers. Surely if they want people to go to their gym they'd supply some of the dumbells you'd prefer. I'm sure you won't be alone in your cause and you'll probably be able to get enough support to prompt a change.

I would.. but I'm near the end of my yearly membership anyway. I had joined originally because of proximity to my home.. but I've come to realise that this gym in particular is trying too hard to cater to women and elderly folk. My dojo now has enough equipment to rival any gym.. so I suppose I'll actually use the facilities now.

A medium paced activity will have your metabolism drawing calories from stored fat within your body. Running on the other hand demands an important and immediate source of energy, like carbs or even protein. So far as cardiovascular health goes.. the more you tax your heart, the stronger it will get. Most people tend to forget that it is a muscle, afterall.

So what? Running or walking is better? (For burning calories).

Cycling and running will burn more calories then any other aerobic excerise. They both burn roughly the same amount of calories. Running at 13 mph with a 2% incline for ten minute will burn the same amount of calories as doing 10 minutes of hard cycling on the bike.

If you're quite heavy then cycling will probably be better for your knees though.

Oh yeah lookingTwiceKills I didn't know it was you who I blocked on Msn. I get a load of little shits adding me to their contacts and I usually block these right away. I thought you were someone else, sorry.

-----------------------------------------

On a gym related subject here is some advice to those who are beginning weight training. This article should help you starting out as this in my opinion is the most difficult stage of training as its hard to get motivated and finding a trainout wokout suited to you.

For a beginner I would suggest that you workout 3 days per week or every other day. By doing this you will give your body plenty of time for recuperation and muscle growth. Muscles do not grow while you are working out; they grow while you are resting. Working out will stress and damage the muscles slightly. Then your body reacts by building up the muscles in order to handle the extra work and stress. So by gradually increasing the workload you put on your muscles your body will become bigger and stronger.

A common mistake that people make is thinking that they will get better results if they workout for several hours everyday. This is not true because what happens is the muscles get stressed and damaged but they don’t get a chance to recover and build up. This is what is called “over training”. When you over train your body can’t build muscle and you may even lose some of the muscle you have now.

You can shorten the period it takes the body to recover from a workout through proper nutrition. By eating lots of nutritious foods you provide the body with the raw material it needs for muscle growth. Supplements are are useful if you use them correctly.Take small amounts supplements to help you get extra nutrients. Supplements are not designed to replace real food, but to be taken in addition to real food. For example if you ate the typical 3 meals a day and then had a protein shake in between each meal this would be a great way to improve” your diet with extra protein.

For your nutrition you should eat at least 1 gram of protein per pound of bodyweight. For protein eat foods such as beef, chicken, turkey, fish, eggs, milk, protein shakes, etc. Eat plenty of carbohydrates such as bread, rice, cereals, potatoes, pasta, fruit, vegetables, etc. Try to limit your fat intake, you don’t eliminate fat entirely just avoid eating excess fried foods and “junk-foods”.That means cut out the McDonlads and shit like that. Trust me you'll feel good about it if you swap a big Mac for a decent chicken and cheese roll.

Eat a small meal every 2-3 hours. A protein and carbohydrate shake can be considered a meal. Drink at least 1 gallon of water per day and get a decent amount of sleep eveyday.

For lunch at school or work you could:

1.Cook foods such as chicken, beef, turkey, rice, pasta, etc. ahead of time and put them in a Tupperware container to reheat in the microwave.

2.Make sandwiches such as tuna, roast beef, turkey, etc. Soup is a great partner for these foods.

3.Mix a protein shake and take it with you in a bottle.

1.Take fruits and vegetables i.e. apples, bananas, carrots, etc.

Eating right is not that difficult it just takes a bit of planning ahead.

Cheers.

I'm not a fan of either. I feel very vunerable (dunno why, I just do).
Anyway I'm planning on walking to the end of my village and back against.... should take about an hour of solid walking. Is that still a good way to burn calories?

Yup. I would burn 157 calories doing this. Your heavier so you would burn more. Try jogging for some of the distance.

Sign up to this site. http://www.fitday.com

They have an excellant calorie counter when you can calulate how long will it take for you to burn calories doing any sport. Also they have a section where you tell you how much calories certain foods have.

Using this site you can plan your diet. What you want to eat and how long it will take you to burn off the calories. very handy in my opinion.

I'd like to make an annoucement to all not in this club.

Just because this club looks dead doesn't nessecarily mean it is.
All the regulars of this club are still very much alive. So if you have a question don't be hesitant to ask, I can guarantee that it will be answered.

Obviously we don't want to just hold general bullshit conversation because this is a place for Fitness help, tips etc... not for general chatter. Thats why this place seems dead. We just don't want to spam, and a lot of questions have already been answered, but your question/tip might be unique.. so ask away don't be shy.

Yes, this is a bump... but I'm also concerned as to why this club thived at one point and then died. So I'm just assuminh people think this club is dead... not the case!

Agreed.

I was at the gym yesterday and had a go of the ol' step machine. Its sorta a girlie machine but its still awesome. It gives a better workout then the treadmill and the bike machine because your whole body is moving. Also its a great workout for your calves, thighs and arse so yeah I recommend it to anyone hitting the gym.

------------------------------------

Those of you trying to get a 6-pack are you sick of doin crunches? I hate them with a passion as I find them boring. I do leg lifts instead. I find they give a much better ab workout then basic crunches.

Try doing these leg lifts you'll be surprise how good of a workout they give your abs.

In Cross-Country every now and then we do an extra set of stretches which arent really stretches, more of a work out... By the time i'm done my abs hurt like a bitch and then we gotta go run... But its mainly from the leg lifts that we do....

yup swiss balls are good. You can do about 300 excerises on them. You can work every part of your body on them provided you have dumbells to work your arms etc..

They're excellant for the abs too.

Excellent, I'm assuming the ball replaces the bench.. so all I'd need is ball and dumbells? If so I'll get them very soon cause I got a nice £60 burining a hole in my bank account.

Yup.

But I dunno i've never really liked the swiss ball. They can be kinda fidily if ye know what I mean. I just get pissed of when using them and would rather work out on a bench 100% of the time.

I prefer the bench & dumbells. With the dumbells you can work forearms, biceps shoulders etc.. With the bench you can do you bench presses, leg lifts etc

I bought a bench with a barbell and weights for only €100 so i'd say you could pick up a cheap one if you shop around.

Hi, im 13 years old and tired of people pushing me around cause they think i am week(I sorta am). Need some tips on defining my muscles and just getting stronger in my upper body/abs. I play hockey but that still isn't enough to get me any thinner. I do a workout of 20-25 curls with a 10 pound weight(i know, its sad). Also, every once and a while I will do 120 crunches. I will do 50 side crunches, where u put your foot on your other knee and touch your opposite elbow to your knee on the lifted foot, on both sides of my bodies. Then I do 20 normal crunches. I know I should'nt be too skinny now because it will stunt my growth but I still wanna look stronger and more cut.

If you want to be stronger you have to apply resistance to your muscles thats all there is to it. I'm new to the topic myself and it looks like VL has a solid handle on most questions but I might be able to help too. It would really help though if I knew what you had to work with as in weights access to gym any injuries limitations before I suggest anything. I've learned that lesson... I've been working out since I was 14 on and off so I'm not as sizeable as I should be but not the point you only need information. anyway you need to eat well and I'll get into that after you provide what you have to work with

People push you around not because your weak, its because you let them. Let them know you not a person to fuck around with.Getting stronger isn't going to stop a group of people hitting you.You need to make a stand against bullies.

But if you feel bulking up will help you then I'll do my best to give you some solid advice.

Ok I get the feeling your built like an average 13 year old.Small? and skinny. You want to bulk up? Do you exercises but eat properly too. Eat 6 meals a day. Breakfast, mid morning snack, lunch, dinner and supper. Yogurt, fruit, veg, meat etc eat the good stuff but cut out the fast food, chicolate etc this won't give you the required energy but will leave you feeling bloated, spotty and fat.Bread, pasta its all good. Also drink 6 glasses of water a day. This will help you muscles recover quicker.

Ok you said you wanted to get a stronger upper body, that aint hard. You need to buy a bench with a barbell. With X-Mas coming up this couldn't be a problem.

Chest excerises here

Don't do anymore then 10 reps of anyone excerise.By your last rep you should be struggling. This means the excerise it working. It should hurt.

Do a couple of these excerises twice every two days. You MUST leave a day of rest after a workout. This leaves time fot your muscles to recover and grow. Its when your resting is when you muscles are growing.

Want to build bigger arms too?

--------------------------------------

Ok abs.

Ab excerises should be hard. If your doing 120 it means your not working your abs right. If you do them right you stomach should be burning after 30.

Try these excerises and read the information

As you can see you must work all 3 areas of you stomach.

Try these excerises and see which ones you like. My personal favourite ab excerise is:

1.Lie on a flat bench. With hands grasping bench behind your head for support.

2.Lift legs up SLOWLY and straght into the air, hips not touching bench. Bring legs down to chest and then back up.

3.Then, bring them back down again and instead of going up bring legs straight out so you back to your starting position except your legs are 5 inches of the group instead of flat on the bench.

4.Thats ONE rep, do 9 more!
