The fall of WinTel?
I posted this in this section because everyone here should be fairly knowlegable in the field of computers.
For the past few years, Microsoft, Intel and nVIDIA have been the status qoue. You had Windows, Pentium and GeForce, Or it sucked. But now, That is changing very quickly.
The AMD 2200+ Throughbred is a very fast processor, and it can keep up easily with the P4 2.53 because AMD chips archive memory more efficently. But AMD has yet to play their Trump Card.
The next generation of AMD processors, Named after Hammers (Which I think is gay, But name dosent effect performance) shall be 64 bit chips, Meaning they will be twice as fast as the Athlon and Intel. However, Microsoft, In order to protect it's massive holdings in Intel refuses to support AMD's 64-bit technoligy.
But, recently, Microsfot was forced to release some of it's code to the world. Meaning That it will now be far easier for companies like Linux to get a foothold in the OS market. Believe me when I say, If Microsoft wont support the 64-bit, Someone else will.
The AMD Claw Hammer (Really gay name...) will have an improved memory Archival system, Meaning it will be blazing fast. And, It will be cheaper than the P4.
As far as nVIDIA is concerned, The Radeon 9000 has already been released. The Radeon 9000 is a quad pipe card to nVIDIA's dual pipe card. That means the Radeon is twice as fast. Right now, Even though it has just been released, You can get a Radeon 9000 64MB DDR for 74 bucks! That's cheaper than a Generic GeForce 4 that isn't even as fast. But the Radeon 9700 is what I am really waiting for. It will be the first 256MB DDR card ever, and combine that with it's quad pipe technoligy, ATI's various other innovations (Smartshade, etc.) and nVIDIA will have a hell of a time keeping up.
By 2003, We should be able to have a totally WinTel free PC that can run everything.
Just think, The capabilities of Windows (By that, I mean software compatabilities) combined with the security of UNIX, and the speed of AMD and ATI.
And it will acually work!
